sorry, it's 7 am and i've been up 2 days in a row, two corrections from the previous. first the first paragraph "heard you calling from the hall" tells us she is not dead yet, at least in the beginning. insert that in :) secondly just a typo, under the part of lyrics that say "I painted on the floor" the very next line should say "We are starting to love you more, means he was not the only *ONE* that thought lowly of her." instead of the only way |

LET ME CLEAR THIS UP SO EVERYONE CAN STOP GUESSING, SOOOOO WROOOOONG!!!! ha. the simple meaning could be most of these comments combined, mainly thornographers, who would be right on. The narrator beat her first, and then she killed herself. It is the most simple explanation for the entire song. My take on it is slightly more in depth however. the most critical line is this: ADMIRE THE WHORE that is the theme of the song. If he loved her like he should've, like most of these comments state, this line would not exist. No one calls their own woman a whore, especially one that committed suicide. Anyway here's my interpretation. We walked through the doorway Heard you calling from the hall To find you in the bedroom Not breathing at all "We" walk through the doorway, meaning it's more than one person. I think this shows that her suicide was unexpected. More than one person was entering the house, so nothing unusual was supposed to happen. The fact that she was already in the house means it was someone the narrator knew. It also means she was the only one in the house, so this tells us she was probably living there, or at least staying there, with the narrator. Consider the line "To find you in the bedroom" think about it. the word "the" before bedroom. saying found you in THE bedroom hints that it was a bedroom to both of them. the words aren't "found you in my bedroom" or "found you in a bedroom" but "found you in the bedroom" I drug (or drag) your body to the cellar where we lay The wax, it melts away I kiss your face. If you find someone you truly love dead, would you drag them? Cuz I wouldn't, I'd carry her. The wax melting away shows time going by, whether it literally means candles or not. as he looks at her, he kisses her. I think this is significant, as you don't kiss someone you don't care for, but he does here. Now we are starting to love you more Your body's on the canvas I painted on the floor "We" are starting to love you more, means he was not the only way that thought lowly of her. But "I painted on the floor" is important - it shows he feels mainly responsible. The canvas is the first but not last artistic metaphor we see. Now you wait like the drug, like the change And the pain it goes on for so long And oh, how it hurts in the worst way now that you're gone It's so wrong It's so wrong. The other explanations seem pretty good... I'm honestly not sure though. "Now you wait" is a little confusing.. I'll come back to that. "It's so wrong" is describing the entire situtation, which is why it is so often repeated. I think it is how the narrator feels overall. If I could take you somewhere I'd take you to the darkest place Scatter you in art forms Admire the whore Beauty in different ways This is the thesis for the song. It's mostly explained in other comments, except admire the whore. I think it basically means whoever she was, she was a slut, and she knew she wasn't respected. She was probably mistreated, taken for granted, or maybe even beaten, which explains her suicide. The narrator is expressing regret, saying (metaphorically) that he wishes he could spread parts of her around, and admire her, like artwork, or appreciate her "beauty in different ways," although she was a whore to him. Your hands on picture frames Your eyes in the glass Wear your face as a mask Just more detail about metaphorical ways to appreciate her beauty in an artistic way. It almost sounds like he is imagining having to look at her only in a picture frame, wishing she could physically come out, but I'm honestly not sure if that's what the writer was going for here or not. Now they are starting to love you more A gallery of your beauty No charge at the door "THEY" are starting, instead of "WE" meaning more people are here. Could very well be referring to a funeral, or he could have called some of his friends, not knowing what to do. They are starting to love you more, meaning whoever was there, also thought lowly or her. No charge at the door is possibly referring to a funeral as well, comparing the the gallery of her body to an art show, although it could also be another hint at her being a whore. And down below Your veins run dry your vacant eyes I lost control Your face is pale, your body's cold And down below your veins run dry your vacant eyes I lost control Your face is pale, your body's cold And down below - says her body is still down below, which could suggest there was not a funeral yet. Your veins run dry, again suggests she is not completely dead yet. I lost control - this could mean a few things. Being in the sitution the narrator is in right now, he could mean lost mental control, or he just can't handle it. It could just mean he used to beat her, but I'm not sure that's what it means here. I think it means he broke down sobbing after coming back upstairs. ok back to the chorus: Now you wait like the drug, like the change And the pain it goes on for so long And oh, how it hurts in the worst way now that you're gone It's so wrong It's so wrong. "Now you wait," could hint that she is not dead yet, however I think here, it does not mean this. She was mistreated and taken for granted, called a whore. She waited for the drugs to kick in, waited for the change to take place, for her to be seen as beautiful. The pain it goes on, is pain once felt by her, now shared by the narrator, the one who feels responsible for her suicide. This would hurt, in the worst way. TaDA! there ya go. believe it or not i did not write this analysis to critique the lyrics of the song, but to correct xxHxcxxxHomiexx DONNIE DARKO WAS NOT A MOVIE ABOUT A MENTAL PERSON! Donnie Darko was a spoof on a superhero movie, Donnie Darko's superpower being the ability to see into the future. He saw his own path, as well as the path others were going to take, which was a clear swirling energy that came out of their chest. [GRETCHEN] - "Donnie Darko? What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something" [DONNIE] - "What makes you think I'm not?" The entire movie was Donnie Darko's subconscious, or possibly a vision. Frank was his mind's narrator. In his vision Donnie saw that a plane turbine (or something) was going to crash through his room and kill him. However, he also saw that if he left and survived, it would result in the death of his mother and sister, who would be on that plane, as well as the death of his girlfriend, the death of Frank, and many other's lives would be negatively affected. As a result, Donnie Darko stays in his room before any of it actually happens, and dies to save everyone else. Therefore, he is a hero. DONT COMMENT ON AMAZING MOVIES THAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND! In the movie, Donnie Darko's teacher, (who would be fired if Donnie did not die) told him that Cellar Door was said to be the most beautiful word in existence, when void of it's definition. The point is to see beauty in a different, almost artistic way, which is where the perfectly chosen title comes from, "Cellar Door." Escape the Fate is amazing. |
