Incubus – Just A Phase Lyrics 8 years ago
Best description of the song I've seen so far. Almost my interpretation in a nutshell. I think the "Temporaryism" concept goes a bit further than just social media, and refers to our entire construct of society we have created. Our economy and business practices (screw the environment, let's make money), our relationships (divorce rate above 50%), our pop culture (the Justin Beavers and Desperate House wives) are all quick fixes and temporary satisfactions rather than any kind of lasting or sustainable practices. Bravo on your analysis of the song. I also like your last comment on Brandon's ego. I think he does that often. I also felt he was sort of talking about himself with the chorus. As he says "And I'm waiting for it to be over too", the "too" at the end suggests that he himself is victim to the "plague" as he calls it. After all, there is only so much we can do to resist the rules and structure of a society we are born and raised into. No matter how hard we try to rebel and resist, we must make compromises in order to function in society.

Bah people always think a song is about relationships. There are a lot of songs about relationships, but I don't think this one is. At least not directly. Back when Incubus made this album, they didn't do many songs about relationships. They did songs about society and conformity.

This song could be about pop singers, but I like to think it's a bit more deep than that. One of my favorite lyrics of all time come from this song "temporaryism has been the black plague, and the Jesus of our age." Now if that wonderful line was inspired by hatred for pop stars, then I would be disappointed lol. I associate that line to our entire culture in so many different respects. How our economic interests are focused on fast, immediate consumption without regard for future generations or the environment. How our personal relationships are becoming more and more like temporary pleasures rather than long term commitments with divorce rates soaring over 50%. How the "pop culture" creates this fast-paced, media-driven hogwash of "stars" that come and go faster than a decade. There are just so many applications for that temporaryism he speaks of, it HAS to be about more than just pop stars lol.

I think the "it" he is referring to is religion. Specifically the conformist nature of religion. I think he is comparring TV, media, etc.. to religion, and saying that it's coming around again like it did hundreds of years ago to control and conform the masses. I think he's just trying to make conformity tangible by referring to it as "it".

This song isn't about drugs. It's about noncomformity, a lot of incubus songs are about noncomformity. Many people that do drugs tend to think all songs are about drugs haha. Think about the metaphors he uses.
"And it feels like a matador is taunting me with his reddest red cloth and I am the bull"...
The bull is powerless to resist the red cloth, and the matador has complete control over the bull, the bull is his puppet. Much like how television has complete control over our minds. Tells us what to do, how to be, what to buy. Incubus is trying to explain that we are all sheep to this societal conformity. That the real important things in life are not found on television, magazines, and department stores. In their album Science, they have a song called "Idiot Box". All about how television is like a religion, even uses a metaphor of comparring TV to God. Most of us are powerless against the power of comformity, because we all have the basic need to feel a sense of belonging. That usually means doing what's expected of you, and TV and media is our "bible" telling us how to do that. I feel Incubus is expressing frustration and resistance to that "sheep" like behavior. To understand Incubus, I think you have to have similar feelings about things as he expresses in his songs. I have, and that is what drew me to their music.

Cake – Nugget Lyrics 10 years ago
The first verse refers to the senators and governors (really anyone in a position of power). They "ride and wrangle" in my opinion is a double meaning refering to a specific state, Texas, perhaps in reference to the Bush family. I think in general he is saying these people have too much power over our lives, and who are they to have that? A bit of sarcasm thrown around, which John is famous for.

The chorus, I believe, is complete sarcasm. He's telling us all to "shut the fuck up" and do as we're told, cause that's the way of the world. He seems to do that a lot, satirical choruses and such.

The second verse, the nimble fingers dancing on numbers I believe is referring to our capitalist society. Where the value of the dollar is more important than a person's health or well-being. "Heavy torsos that heave and hurl" referring to the obesity problem in the US maybe? Caused by corporate greed.

The third verse (my favorite) I believe is referring to the consequences of all these actions. Specifically one of the most dire of these consequences, global climate change. I think he's saying that the people that have no regard for any of us, or the planet, piss him off more than the fact that the planet is burning up. That the greed and ignorance is the real threat.

I think you're trying a bit too hard to relate it to buddhism. I am sure they are into buddhism, but I don't think they are referring to it in this song. One of the major reasons is because your explanation only explains part of their lyrics and not the others. I would not be surprised if buddhist idealisms didn't play a role in their philosophy, but I think that this song is a bit more profound than just being about the philosophy. "Do you get it yet?" I think he's trying to explain something to people that are hard headed...

yeh except there are multiple meanings in that title... There is your interpretation (with left meaning the odd ball), plus "left" referring to being left over from the group. Also the literal translation where a crow is actually to the left of a murder (as in killing) (because crows are often associated with real murders).. Anyways I am not sure the title was intended to have only one reference.

Actually I'm impressed you got the global warming reference. Most people do not. I agree with you, but think it's more than just global warming. He's talking about money, greed, and all the nasty things in the human race that push our society to kill each other and destroy the natural world. He's saying we are WAY over do for a make over. The people that made the systems we STILL use today are long dead and gone, and other people are just taking their place and raping the world with their greed. So why isn't there a revolution, why isn't there changes being made? Why are we procrastinating? A Certain Shade of Green is actually a reference from a book called "Pheonix Rising: No eyes' vision of the changes to come" by Mary Summer Rain. Boyd and company were obviously a fan of that book, lots of references.

That is the end of another one of their songs that is completely intrunmental... That song IS about pot, or rather is designed for spacing out while on pot. A certain shade of green is NOT about pot. It's about the procrastination of the human race to make necessary changes in our society so we stop killing ourselves and the planet.

Alot of you guys are still missing the point. Drugs, driving, jealousy are all just reatarted. The song being about procrastination is right, but it's not really about personal procrastination. It's about us as an entire race, the human race. I am pretty sure he is referring to capatalism/money/greed and all the evils in society. How we are polluting the earth, and know it, but doing nothing about it. He's talking about changing our entire society, living peaceful and with the same goals, where are humans are truely created equal in social status, race, gender whatever... Here is an example from the song:
"You've been raised in limitations
But that glove never fit quite right
The time has passed for hand-me-downs
Choose a new; please evolve; take flight"

Here is referring to the environment most all of us are raised into. Most of us don't have much of a choice. A muslim is born muslim, a christian is born christian, and money grubbing selfish ass parent teaches their child the same values. So "that glove never fit quite right" meaning these values are wrong, are old traditions that need to change, evolve, because people are using them for excuses to not change and the world is being damaged, and so are our souls. The next few lines are self-evident.

haha I was reading through the comments and getting discouraged that no one had said the truth. You pretty much got it right on the nose. This is why I love incubus, they sing about the same goals I have. To change our society before we destroy ourselves. It's amazing how so many people are into the music but have no idea what he's talking about. Drugs, jealousy, road rage?! I mean come on! lol

A certain shade of green is not about smoking... The "shade of green" is directly referenced from the book by Rain. If it were about pot, he wouldn't have taken the words from the book... Certain shade of green is referring to the end of the world...

Why does everyone want to relate songs to relationships and love? This song is not about jealousy, it's referencing on a book Boyd read called "Pheonix Rising: No eyes' vision of the changes to come" by Mary Summer Rain. In the book, Rain describes the end of the world in 2012 covering the sky in a "certain shade of green". The song is basically about not procrastinating and going after your dreams.

You're a woman right? You can't identify with this song... You might be able to imagine it, may even caused the feelings before, but unless you have a man's mind (or you're a lesbian) you'll not be able to truely identify with the song. Maybe part of it, but not the whole song and real feelings behind it..

You crazy groupie! How can you "relate" to this song... You're a girl... I mean it's possible a girl relates to this song, but it's unlikely. And I don't think you really do, I just think you got a big crush on Weezer. This song is about how a girl did him wrong basically, or what he deep down inside knows he screwed up, but still... Most the time girl's have different ways of thinking then men, especially in relationships. I mean a girl can relate maybe to missing a guy, or maybe looking at an old picture and remembering. But you'll have a hard time convincing me you really relate to how he's feeling. You're one of "them" that causes the feelings lol.

Weezer – No One Else Lyrics 10 years ago
This song goes along with "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here". In my opinion, he is exaggerating his jealous attitude about his girlfriend, but with some truth in it. He probably really did want her to show more personal affections to him. He probably got really angry when she kept resisting, and showing her affections to other men. So he wrote this song out of spite, purposely being an asshole about it, and sort of describing what pushed her away. And then in "The World Has Turned..." it's about the aftermath of that story, and how he felt. I had a very similar relationship recently where I felt similar. Even did and thought some crazy things out of frustration. But I still believe that we both deserved more from the girl, then it wouldn't have made us so crazy. I can handle a relationship not working out, I can't handle a relationship that the girl puts no effort into it, even though she "acts" just as into you in the beginning. I think maybe River's feels the same way. Either way I think River's is well aware of how crazy this song makes him seem (if it's even really about him), but he wanted to express that angst he felt so I think he exaggerated it a bit.

Weezer – Butterfly Lyrics 10 years ago
You're confusing his songs with River's personal experiences and doings. That's not necessarily true. Many artists narrate other stories or experiences they've heard in their songs... Also, I think you're absolutely wrong about this song. None of them are about rape... You read one line in a song and make huge assumptions. Read ALL the lyrics. This song is about breaking a woman's heart, probably a reference to an opera that River's loves called "Madame Butterfly". The woman in the song is obviously in love with the man though, there is no rape going on... Also, in "No One Else", how is that an unhealthy view of how a girl should be?? Yes it's a little extreme, I think he does that on purpose, but in reality a woman should want to give the majority of herself to a man if she really loves him. I have had experience with a girl who I was really into and she just kept running around flirting, never showing public affection, etc... That crap really does hurt when you love someone, as it should. Love is really going in the crap hole with attitudes like yours "unhealthy attitude towards women... I say you have an unhealthy attitude about love and affection... Maybe some daddy issues?

Weezer – Butterfly Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's a song about taking a girl's virginity, and then breaking her heart. "Caught a lovely butterfly" butterfly is a common metaphor for a girl's virginity. He took that innocence from her, not necessarily against her will or anything. But he's the "dog" that made her into a "bitch". In the end of the song, seems he is saying that he made promises to her to return after he figures things out, maybe even make a home for himself "robin's nest". He realises that his promises were just to make her feel better, and he never intended to keep them.

Weezer – Butterfly Lyrics 10 years ago
No, you're listening to one line of lyrics. There is a whole song there. None of the rest of the song seems to have any reference to "forcing himself on a girl". Also it never said SHE called him a dog. He's calling himself a dog, and her his bitch. Basically saying because he is a dog, she becomes a bitch after what he has done.

Cake – Friend Is A Four Letter Word Lyrics 10 years ago
Disagree with one part. Think the four letter word is "Love". He's saying that when she says "we're just friends" he hears "I love you, don't give up". I think it's about being trapped in that situation where he's driven for a woman mostly because she has hurt his ego. He's just wants her to fix it, and he hears and sees what he wants to instead of what she is portraying. I basically agree with you except the curse part...

Cake – Friend Is A Four Letter Word Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree except I think it's about a relationship that already happened and he wants her to just stop acting so distant and get close to him again. She's doing what many girls do and trying to keep the guy in her life as a friend, but all he wants is for her to want him back again. I think he's sort of going along with it just waiting for the oppurtunity to get back with her, and this song is sort of what's going on in the back of his mind.

Cake – Friend Is A Four Letter Word Lyrics 10 years ago
Simple. Love is the 4 letter word. Everytime the girl gives a distant attitude or flat insists that friends is all she can be, all he thinks is getting to the point where she's into him. The girl "feels" nothing about him, that's why he's wishing her words betray how she acts. Which is constantly distant, he wants he to get close. When she speaks, she draws him in, maybe even gives him false hope. Her actions are distant, and actions usually speak louder than words. He's not willing to accept the truth, he realizes it, but at the time was powerless.

Cake – Dime Lyrics 10 years ago
Cake really doesn't write about love, except in one album... People constantly interprept songs as love songs when they are not, like this one for example. You have to ignore most of the song to really believe it's about love... Love is more than likely the most common theme in songs, but people tend to over emphasize. I feel this song is more about a mentality or lifestyle than emotions. I mean there is the "tone" of the song too, it's indifferent and slightly peppy.

Cake – Dime Lyrics 10 years ago
Seems to me this song is using the dime as a metaphor for the drifter or hippie lifestyle. One who would not be worth much in a material sense but in quite content with life "I'm fine, And I shine". Perhaps suggesting that living simply and under the radar can be quite satisfying. "Not to be dented by a car, by a plane, or anything not yet invented". Do planes run over dimes? Do future technologies? I believe he referring to illusion created by the reliance of such things, and that they are unneccessary, and by living simply it is possible to avoid being "dented" by such things..

Cake – Love You Madly Lyrics 10 years ago
No, it's about emotional detatched relationships, not about "falling in love". It's not about how he specifically is in a relationship.. You're obviously biased by your experience and see what you want to see in the song, which is common. But if you think about the metaphors in the song, there is no reference to real love. "I want to love you madly" is more than likely referencing intercourse. "Elephant/dish" part is more than likely a metaphor of complications of a real relationship which he wants to avoid in this situation. He's basically saying that keeping the relationship uninvolved will produce the most pleasurable results. Are you a woman? lol cause you're totally reading into it like a woman would.

Cake – Sheep Go To Heaven Lyrics 11 years ago
The most important part of the song isn't even in the lyrics! In the end he tells everyone to "Go to hell". He is telling you to be a goat! That is the purpose of the song. Live your life by your own rules, do not be herded around by tainted philosophies and society. He doesn't want to go to Sunset strip and feel the emptiness.. Sunset strip use to be the spot for the hippies, or counter culture. Obviously this guy is all about that movement, and he is disappointed at what the strip turned into. When you go to one of his concerts, a lot of times he uses this song to get the crowd involved. Near the end he will have everyone repeat the chorus "Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell" as he says "Go to hell" in the between the beats. Fairly awesome experience. Telling you to be a goat, that's the purpose of the song!

Cake – Where Would I Be? Lyrics 11 years ago
This could be about God or a woman really... It's hard to ascertain the precise meaning of the song, but perhaps that was his purpose. I lean more towards spirituality. He uses a lot of biblical references in his songs. This leads me to believe that religion had a big influence on him at some point in his life, maybe as a child. Now you can be spiritual without believing in the dogma of religion (I am).
"you were to be the only one
if i knew you i would not run
you have been cloudy, distant, dark
i'm thinking of noah and the ark"
That last line is what he convinced me it was about God. God flooded the world with torrential rains, killing all life but Noah and his animals. Fairly depressing stuff. I think he's pointing out that he struggled to know God, but that religion made it so difficult because of the horrible stories. But I could be completely wrong, and he intended it to be about a woman... Fun to think about!
