The Mountain Goats – Broom People Lyrics 13 years ago
This is a great Song. I absolutely love every line but when John sings "Dishes in the Kitchen Sink" it just gets me every time. The way he can put so much emotion and feelings into his music blows me away, especially when he's singing about something so mundane.

okay, so after listening to this song like, 1000 times, I have decided it is about Zombies.

here is why:

"that the soil is soaked through with old blood and with relatives
who were buried here, or close to here, and they are giving rise"

Zombies, that's why he is going to alaska, where you can go blind just by looking at the ground, and the animals can kill you, and you have to eat fat by itself just to keep warm. these are all terrible things, but not nearly so bad as Zombies.

this song is fuckin awesome. It is so intense, John really gets his feelings out in this one, even though they aren't clear. I still can't make any real opinions on exactly what John is trying to say in this song. I am too confused about the plump chicken boddies blotting out the sky, even though chickens can't fly (which he mentions in the song) but I really don't care. I think this song is too great to be disected.

this song kicks so much ass, you'll probably go blind!

It seems like he is very optimistic about something. like something is keeping him going, even though the other person in the song is being mean to him. Also, it is obviously someone he cares about. even though it's really short, I love this song so much. Makes me feel good

The Mountain Goats – Dance Music Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the Special Secret Sickness is deffinately something more drastic or fatal than drug use or alcholism. I think quite possibly that it is Cancer or maybe another terminal illness. But the Narator isn't aware of the sickness because it mentions it's "Secret". you have to remember that this song is like a flash back. what he knew when he wrote it might not be the same as what he knew when it was happening, if you follow. So I think his Girlfriend is really sick, but he doesn't know she is. "no way of knowing" so he sticks with her down this "alleyway" of life and he runs into a few dead end of his own. his own problems and obstacles. when he says there is only one place this road ever ends up, I think he is referring to life in general. Everybody dies, but he doesn't want to die alone.
When he gets to the "let me down gently" part, I think the girlfriend is breaking up with him, because she is sick and want's to let him down gently before she passes away rather than let it be a (nasty) shock to him. And when the cops come to get him, I don't think its for anything he has done wrong, I think they are coming to tell him that she has passed away. And he is listening to Dance Music.
For those of you who were talking about the whole Cathy, Jackie thing, I think when he wrote the song, it was about the same girl, Cathy, who he mentions in "This Year". I am going to Hazard a guess and say that he says Jackie in live performances because she is his current girlfriend and it's like his own, private little shout out to his Girlfriend. Many singers do this.

The only thing that I find odd about this song, is that he says he is watching the Watergate hearings when he is 5 years old (or 6 maybe). I just find this odd because it's not something that would strike me as interesting to a 5 year old. Just a thought though.

this song, much like the song "Love Love Love" is about how love can be also be a destructive force. It isn't always Honkey Dorey. Love can be confusing, painful and terrifying. Consider crimes of passion, Murder done in the sake of love.

great song though

The Rapture – Pieces of the People We Love Lyrics 14 years ago
This is such a good song. I think this song is just a good old fashioned love song. The pieces of the people we love are the bits of them we hold in our heart (not literal "bits" but the more romantic, figurative "bits", like memories and love) If you have ever heard the term "my heart belongs to you" that is kinda what they are talking about here. My heart is a little piece of you that I keep inside.

Such a nice song

Actually, the more I read through it, the more I think that, what they are giving out is Liquid LSD. That shit will keep you up for weeks and deffinately put colour in your cheeks.

This song is simply amazing. I am pretty sure it is about an inn or hostel that serves moonshine, cause if ANYTHING will put the colour back in your cheeks, its moonshine.

I might be wrong here, but to me this song, at least the first half, is about Hopelessness. John might as well just say "this song is for the hopeless". exactly what he is trying to tell them, probably nobody but John knows.

The Mountain Goats – Love Love Love Lyrics 14 years ago
this song is utterly amazing.
There seems to be allot of discussion about types of love in regards to this song, and that all these charachters and their actions are done in the name of love, but I disagree. I think this song is about Kurt Kobain. here are my thoughts.

In the first verse "king Saul fell on his sword... Joseph's brother sold him down the river... Sonny Liston rubbed some tiger balm into his gloves..." these are all things people did for money, or personal Gain. King Saul took the easy way out when things were getting rough, Joseph's brother got a song (?) and Sonny liston won his fights (by cheating*) and of course was paid. I don't think they were trying to say these were acts of love, hence the follow up lines, "some things you do for money and some you do for love love love". these are all things you do for money (or personal gain)
in the second verse, about Raskilnakov, I think his actions were done for fun. I have not read crime and punishment, but I read a charachter bio of raskilnakov and it seems to fit this theory. as well, the end of that verse is, "some things you do for money, and some you do for fun, but the ones you do for love are gonna come back to you one by one" again the important line is the "some things you do for fun"
In the third section, where it says 'love love is gonna lead you by the hand..." this verse is the lead in for the fourth verse. It sort of tells you what the song is about and the white and silent place is heaven or the afterlife or whatever you beleive in.
Then we get to the fourth verse, about Kurt Kobain. I think this is the most important verse, because I beleive Kurt Kobain is what this song is about. you can tell it is most important for 2 reasons, one, it is at the end, and two, it is broken up from the rest of the song by the third section, which is completely differant from the other 3. I think Kurt Kobain's actions are the only ones depicted as acts of love. if you read into Kurt Kobains history and where his head was at before he commited suicide, i think you would agree. I am not going to get into it now because this post is already too long. but suffice to say, his reasons for suicide were differant than King Saul's.

*by the way, the story there is, Sonny used to rub Tiger Balm, an anti inflamatory, onto his gloves before a fight because he liked to get the knockout punch. when you are in a fight and you get hit, your face and head will swell up, this actually protects the head by cusioning any further blows. but if you put tiger balm on it, it stops the swelling, therefore while Sonny is punching you in the face, he is also rubbing tiger balm on your wounds to prevent them from swelling and therefore making it easier to knock you out*

They Might Be Giants – Your Racist Friend Lyrics 14 years ago
It always seemed to me that, whoever wrote the song (whichever band member I mean) had this happen to him, and came home and literally wrote down what happened and turned it into a song. It sounds so natural and realistic, I don't think theres ANY hidden message.

They Might Be Giants – Dr Worm Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with whoever said this song is to be taken literally. It IS about a worm who plays the drums, and I think TMBG was trying to prevent people from taking meanings from it that arent there. "I am a real worm, I am an actual worm, I live like a worm" that sounds like someone trying to drive home a point to me.
It always seemed like Dr Worm is trying to impress a girl. "I can't tell if you are watching me twirling the stick". He also has some self esteem issues probably. he THINKS he is getting better, and he expects to be critiscized. I also think people are reading into the "I can't hear the doorbell" line too much. I don't think that is alluding to the fact that worms can't see, i think he just can't hear the doorbell over his awesome drumming. although if you WANT to look into the hearing impairment thing, Voles can't see, and he is friends with a vole. but again, reading into it too much. Sure Worms can't hear, but they also can't see, or play the drums... or talk.

for one, I disagree with ANYONE who said this Album wasn't as great as all their other work. Riot Act is quite possibly my favorite, and this song might be my favorite on the album (there are too many good songs to shoose from)
I beleive this song is a tribute to love in general and how we need more of it in the world. it also touches on significance in the world and that, to the universe, we (individually) don't mean a thing, but we can mean the world to each other.

Pearl Jam – All Those Yesterdays Lyrics 14 years ago
I beleive this song is about a specific person, possibly his mother. The "taking pills to get along" line seems to indicate taking anti depressants or something of the like. But its deffinately about a specific person stuck in a shitty situation or relationship that is making them depressed. they are "creating walls to call their own" or isolating themselves. and the "drifting off..." line means they are filling their day with all that monatanous stuff that we all do every day to keep ourselves busy and stop thinking about our real problems.
The only thing I don't get is the contrast between the line "what are you running from?" where it is clear someone is trying to get out of or away from something, and the lines "You've got time. You've got time to escape. There's still time. It's no crime to escape."

great song in any case

They Might Be Giants – Particle Man Lyrics 14 years ago
No Ayyamana, we can't. This is a really good song though.

I deffinately gree that there is some deeper meaning to this song, but exactly what it is is really hard to say. I really like the Watchmen theory as it does seem to fit all the areas. wheather or not this was intedned is another story, it does kind of seem far fetched that they would write a song about the Watchmen and make it SOO cryptic. But it really wouldn't surprise me either way, i mean, they wrote a song that referenced the I love Lucy movie, so why not the Watchmen? the only problem I have is that while Particle man Sounds like Dr Manhattan, ozymandius doesn't hate Dr Manhattan and surely would not win in a fight, although he does get rid of him.

again, it is really hard to decipher a meaning. Maybe it is an accumulation of a number of theories and not just one. either way, great song

I cant see TMBG getting to preachy in this song. I really beleive it is just a song about a nightlight. if you look at some of their other songs, it doesn't seem to far fetched. see examples-
Dr Worm

etc.
