Nirvana – Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam Lyrics 3 years ago
"Don't expect me to cry,
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me"

Christianity makes you feel guilty because "Jesus died for your sins", so the singer is basically just saying: I don't care. Don't expect me to love you (Jesus) just because you did something I never asked you to do. I wouldn't even die for me.

Just a little anti-"Jesus guilt-tripping" folk punk ditty

The Magnetic Fields – I Have The Moon Lyrics 4 years ago
"you have become like other men
but let me kiss you once again"

Idk much about vampire lore, but this sounds like somehow their friend reverted to a mortal being? And the narrator is still a vampire, is in love with their old partner in crime and is gonna miss them when they die.

Before I realized the vampire themes I thought this song was about reincarnation, and being with someone who you've met many times through your various reincarnations, always finding each other and being vagabonds together--a sort of soulmate thing

of Montreal – Wicked Wisdom Lyrics 5 years ago
Idk I love Gay Parade and Cherry Peel, Skeletal Lamping is my favorite at the moment though. I don't think Satanic Panic or Coquelicot are better, but that's just my pinion. Skeletal is just so funky fresh and fun, very few weak spots, hooks from beginning to end, like just within the first ten seconds of Nonpareil of Wisdom. Really cohesive too, but so varied it's great for playing all the way through again and again. What other modern bands have lyrics like "We can do it softcore if you want, But you should know I take it both ways"? Incredible

Grandaddy – The Animal World Lyrics 5 years ago
I guess there's an old movie called "The Animal World" about dinosaurs. And the end of the song has dinosaur/animal sounds. I wouldn't be surprised of Jason grew up watching it, or is at least a fan of the ancient films of the days of old.

Maybe the other meaning of the song is the general theme of death/ending? Metaphorically of how cats go away to die, and how the band was ending. And maybe how earth is dying, he sings "joy to the world" in kind of an ironic depressed way, since we're killing our planet. And maybe it'll start over with another age of dinosaurs, or maybe we'll just be history/extinct like the dinosaurs? Something to think about :/

Any ideas on what the "8... 9..." at the beginning and the "Easy fella" at the end mean? I think of humans crash-landing in a land of dinosaurs, like that Twilight Zone episode? The whole sound going throughout the song is just like a jetliner going down. They countdown for liftoff? Then crash and see a dangerous jurassic animal and say "Easy fella" ?

@[lalaeddie:24691] So so sorry to hear about your loss.. I can only guess, but maybe your nephew felt a connection to the line "all my friends are strangers". I feel this because I'm on the autism spectrum and connecting to people can feel impossible sometimes, even among my friends. Maybe he didn't necessarily feel like nobody liked him, but rather he felt disconnected from people, even ones he liked and who liked him. Personally, I can empathize with that feeling. Again I'm sorry about your nephew, I send loving thoughts to both of you as I write.

Yo La Tengo – Pablo and Andrea Lyrics 6 years ago
My impression is from the point of view of someone who's partner just lost someone at the hospital, and they'll "sit there showing tears if you want me to stay" like "I can leave if you want to grieve in private, or I can be here for you while you go through this". Someone took the flowers away, like a hospital worker is clearing out their room after they've passed

Grimes – California Lyrics 6 years ago
I think it's about the public perception of her and her music, how the press treats her, how she's been so scrutinized. Not sure about California, maybe it's a reference to its music industry? "Commodifying all the pain" is her self-expression being sold to the public. She's hurt by the things people say about her, but realizes its the trade-off for pursuing her dreams of being an artist/musician.

Camper Van Beethoven – Good Guys and Bad Guys Lyrics 6 years ago
I can't tell if Lowery is being cheeky or if it's really just as simple as the chorus suggests. If he's cheeky, it could be mocking Americans who see the world in black-and-white and see themselves as the good guys, but he could be mixing it with sincere feelings of "well, you live in America, it could be worse for you, just relax and get high and listen to music", idk. I love the Russia stanza anyway.

The Velvet Underground – I'm Set Free Lyrics 6 years ago
I love how he sings "What in the world has happened to me"

It's probably about drugs, both being set free by using them, and by quitting them. He's been set free by them, but they also bind him (addiction), so he's set free again once he quits, but he's inevitably going to find something else to take its place (a new illusion)

Grandaddy – Lost on Yer Merry Way Lyrics 6 years ago
I think like someone said, it's about a fear of flying, but also seems like a fear of settling down and a lament of a relationship/marriage ending as they thought they had their partner tied down but their behavior led to them leaving. And just generally the feeling of not knowing what you're really doing, and get stuck in a rut, similar to "The 'Go' in Go-For-It" and "I'm on Standby"

R.E.M. – Fall On Me Lyrics 7 years ago
Allusions to gravity, acid rain, skyscrapers, yeah.

I think the main theme is that society is overlooking its damage to the environment in the name of capitalism and industrial expansion. One day it's going to come back to bite us. People dismiss this as just treehuggers crying that "the sky is falling". Stipe says fuck that, those people are keeping their conscience in the dark pretending the problem doesn't exist--it's gonna fall.

Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics 7 years ago
Could be this is about Win's stage fright and artistic self-doubt, but knowing the anxiety can be treated with his mind, so he could lose himself in the music, the moment, and the "one that he loves" is Régine, so he just wants to not care if people laugh at what he does, he wants to enjoy making music/dancing on stage with the love of his life. Maybe has another theme of the general anxiety surrounding modern life.

Grandaddy – Evermore Lyrics 7 years ago
Hard to pin down, but it sounds like people breaking up, going their separate ways. Then the lonely feeling after, the memories that you can't forget but can't see the reason for remembering when they only bring you pain and sadness now (grieving the end of the relationship). The freeway tree feels put out and stuck as life passes it by.

Grandaddy – Everything Beautiful Is Far Away Lyrics 7 years ago
I wonder if the shuttle that crashed was the one that departed in Laughing Stock?

"Nonphenomenal Lineage" is this character being told he's exiled from Earth because he's not good enough. "Laughing Stock" is both an allusion to the experience of listening to music (Laughing Stock's album Talk Talk?) and part of the narrative of this character being loaded onto a shuttle to be outcast. And "Everything Beautiful" is this character being lonely and missing Earth, seeing things (psychotic depression?) and eventually losing it and walking toward the white lake mirage

Pixies – Havalina Lyrics 7 years ago
I see this song as a counterpart to "Caribou" (in that the chorus is simply the repetition of an animal's name, and both songs seem to express envy/reverence for the wild and free nature of their lives).

This song isn't about people at all, it's just a pastoral image of a Javelina wandering about the trees of Sedona, Arizona.

Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics 7 years ago
Maybe has to do with drugs. But the title "Big Nothing" much more likely refers to life itself.

"You can do what you want to whenever you want to" is optimistic sounding, but for the depressed nihilist, it loses its meaning. Life loses its meaning when you realize that even doing what you want won't add up to anything. All this work, all this hype over what you're going to do with your life, and in the end the reality is that it's rather pointless. Life is the Big Nothing. And I guess to combat this realization, people often turn to drugs to cope, which is where the drug references would tie in.

I noticed just a minute ago and came to check if anyone else noticed lol. It's slowed down Saturday main beat without the other fancy percussion. I always thought Saturday was about Georgia having a hard time enjoying herself at a party because of depression, and maybe Nothing But You & Me is from Ira's point-of-view, depressed that Georgia's depressed and doesn't know how to fix it.

Grandaddy – The Crystal Lake Lyrics 7 years ago
@[SMUSER17019091:15911]
Same, in the music video it shows them being lost and confused by modern society/cities after landing there in their flying/spinning shack. The Crystal Lake could signify the crystalline, blue landscape of the clusters of skyscrapers like in the video, and also be a place that's pure and simple and nature-y that he longs for. It's like in Collective Dreamwish of Upperclass Society, he's glad he's back in the country having a beer playing guitar after barely surviving his trip into town

The Replacements – Sixteen Blue Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is most definitely about realizing you're not straight just when everyone's starting to get horny in high school, then waiting and waiting for the right time to come out--your parents say "oh it's just a phase, what are you gonna pull next? You don't understand sexuality, you're just confused" etc. You can't tell most or any of your friends because it'll make them feel uncomfortable around you. So you drag out letting people know who you really are because of the social pressures that are so intense at sixteen, as shown in the tragically high suicide rates among LGBT teens

submissions
R.E.M. – Daysleeper Lyrics 7 years ago
I swear he says "I am the scream" not "I am the screen" on at least one of those. Which would obviously be a reference to The Scream painting by Edvard Munch which depicts the anxiety that modern society causes. Totally fitting for a song about how capitalism/patriotic economies can fuck with our body's natural systems and mess with our heads.

Grandaddy – Go Progress Chrome Lyrics 7 years ago
I'm addicted to this album lately. Just got into this song while delivering a pizza and passing by all the new homes being developed in my hometown. All the traffic and overpopulation that wasn't here when my mom was my age. In the past several years we've developed America's Biggest Outdoor Outlet Mall(tm). Progress is alienating and I easily empathize with people who want things to stay the same because it gives us something to hold onto in an already chaotic and stressful world. Idk. Young Jason seems like a guy who likes to listen to music, do drugs, make music, enjoy nature, art, etc. and his music is as personal as it is universal

"Angst in My Pants" is a euphemism for "I got a boner". It also is close to the phrase "Ants in your pants" which might be where they originally came up with "Angst". This song's just about boners coming at inopportune times and not leaving us alone. I hope it doesn't show.

Ween – Exactly Where I'm At Lyrics 8 years ago
@[patrick0rl:11468] Whenever someone realizes they're wrong on the internet their first line of defense is "I've been trolling of course". It's ok. I know you're dead serious. Just like Ween is at all times.

What's with your fascination of guessing my music taste? You're always way off, Idk if you're just projecting or what. Anyway, I never said you have *no* pubes, just an amount less than the number of Ween albums I've had the pleasure of listening to. You could still have 200 pubes, because I've listened to more than that number in Ween albums. My opinions are immaculate; I'm sorry you are unable to understand them at this time but one day you'll realize how correct I am.
Here's a couple facts for you:
Fact #1: the worst bands in the world are the ones that take themselves too seriously.
Fact #3: Ween is oftentimes silly.

It's somewhat sad that someone would be insecure about liking a band that is silly, goofs off, likes to have fun, doesn't take themselves seriously, is carefree and whimsical, etc. That's a key ingredient in good music. People who super serious are overbearing and boring, like "hey here's a doom rock ballad caleld "Death is inevitable and really sad" and strums a minor E chord sometimes switching to minor A and sings "I called your telephone, but forgot you'll never be home again, my friend. I miss youuuuu. I missss youuuuu-hoo-hoooo" and starts crying on tape and every song on the album is a different remix of that song. Actually that would be a cool album, but you get the gist. Good band who handles death in a silly way? TMBG. Like all of Lincoln. You probably listened to Oingo Boingo's Only a Lad and thought " " but didn't really "get" them. Especially Capitalism--he was a hardcore Libertarian at the time!! I bet you like Talking Heads but don't truly understand the big suit. Maybe you've heard a few Guided By Voices songs and thought "yes." but guess what? No!

Ween – Exactly Where I'm At Lyrics 8 years ago
@[patrick0rl:11446] I've listened to more Ween albums than you have pubic hair follicles, first off. Second, you really think Ween recorded all their songs with a straight face? They're laughing half the time, especially in their older stuff. They're having a good time. Even THEY know it's SILLY. Music can be serious, music can be silly. I like Ween *because* they're silly, even though they can do serious. They're just two guys who love music and having fun, and that's what their music conveys most of the time. You saying their music is "serious" is just as subjective a label as "silly" is. They don't take themselves too seriously, so why are you?

p.s. you are wrong and overreacting

@[patrick0rl:11099] calm down mang. you were so angry at my comment you made an account to reply to it lol. I already spend a good deal of time on the nickelback forum, they're one of the best bands ever. Anyway, Gener himself has said in interviews that he's not sure how he feels about most of his past work, except for The Mollusk. Obviously he's conflicted. I didn't say they sold out or anything, just pontificatin' if that's what one of Gener's fears is; i.e., I was wondering if this song is about the anxieties of being an artist late in your career. Obviously Gener's got some considering he temporarily ended Ween, though that was largely due to drug issues I think he's just a troubled guy, goofy as he is outwardly.

I always heard it as "Who don't like kids who don't like kids", as in who wouldn't like a kid that dislikes other kids? Made the meaning funnier to me since it's sort of paradoxical, but I'm not sure it's how it's supposed to be interpreted.
