Gorillaz – Pirate Jet Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmmm...i think maybe they CREATED the Plastic Beach...by leaving the taps on. But I still see them as seperate from it, bopping along above it all.

Gorillaz – Pirate Jet Lyrics 14 years ago
This is such a cool song to end the story with.

Remember how old 60's cartoonists would sometimes show a funky old car just bopping along to a beat, like it was a living thing? Well, that's how this pirate jet is flying through the clouds above the ocean.

I can't shake the feeling that these miscreants on the jet, a motley group of pirates, are the only survivors of a ruin that has happened to the world, maybe to even the Plastic Beach. We hear how they made thing all good now...maybe they didn't like the world as it was...maybe not even the plastic part. And here they are, after it's all done, partying on their sky-jalopy.

Still connected to the moment it began...maybe we met these guys at the beginning of the story somewhere.

Gorillaz – Cloud Of Unknowing Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm going with "satellite" personally. F--- the lyric book. Next, try to tell me that Lady Gaga's just saying "p-p-p-poker face."

I like how we're hearing Womack again on this. It's as if he's the same voice we heard while visiting the Stylo...this weary old hermit whose been dwelling in space, above the Plastic Beach this whole time (maybe IN A SATELLITE, thankyouverymuch) ...wanting to see his love, his humanity restored, but all he's seen has been tragic...a whole world turned to plastic.

During our journey through the Plastic Beach, he's been trying to reach us...to tell us...to find a way to our hearts...but maybe we never really noticed.

Man! What a good damn song!

Gorillaz – Broken Lyrics 14 years ago
During our journey, we've seen wonders. We want to love this Plastic Beach for the strange beauty, but the love we've found here isn't real...or no more real/meaningful than the stars, or the light of the plasma screens, or the dancing lights above the GlitterFreeze.

To be honest, I think there's something else to this song, especially with it's use of third person. This is a pretty poignant song in general and it's meaning can be pretty universal. But I do think it has some sort of story meaning as well, since the whole album works as a fantastic narrative.

Gorillaz – Some Kind Of Nature Lyrics 14 years ago
We've escaped the horrors of the GlitterFreeze and stumbled numbly back into the strange civilization of the Plastics.

This area, though, is a bit of a slum, a filthy warren of drugged up hole-dwellers. We see the hivelike activity of the beings here...some kind of nature...very strange, but definitely with it's own twisted reason. Drawing back our gaze a bit, one can even fancy seeing each being glimmer like a star - a diamond cast randomly over frayed black velvet.

There may even be some kind of beauty...some kind of gold here. In fact there is a lovely hill just over in the distance...

Gorillaz – Glitter Freeze Lyrics 14 years ago
OK...fleeing from our fate among the Empire Ants, we are now quite lost (Where's North from here?). And it has become quite cold...

We have ventured into the hinterland...the glimmering deadly Glitter Freeze. Endless frost and silicate sharpness, and the mad laughter of this place's only inhabitant. This is not a friendly place at all. It aims to end us...to leave our bodies and souls frozen-sparkling amidst the circuits of snow.

Gorillaz – Empire Ants Lyrics 14 years ago
We're just done humoring the antics of Neptune's waterbreathers, when we hear the beautiful singing of this man who is wandering along a hill...accompanied by such ethereal strings...we are absolutely enthralled by this airy being who sings with such peace about the ultimate harmony of this land. We follow where he leads.

And cresting the hill, we see our destiny...an endless field of people marching along, seemingly lost in memory, repeating and retreading with their little feet...their little dreams...all in service of keeping Tha Machine (the Stylo?) going...creating their own little pieces of it that may spin or soar...all part of a beautiful order...

Luckily, we're able to evade the alluring singer and this mechanic fate...running beyond the borders of this ant empire.

It starts getting colder...

Gorillaz – Superfast Jellyfish Lyrics 14 years ago
While marvelling at the dangerous beauty of The Stylo, we are surprised by two envoys of King Neptune. These waterbreathers, who are older than the Plastic Beach itself, are just DRIPPING with pure style and whimsy. Like glistening salesmen, they show us how much pure mindless fun we can have here. They shine like aluminum amid their plastic-bearing waves, and they're as wily and quick as a superfast jellyfish.

In the end, though, they don't say much, and our attention is drawn to a man singing beautifully in the distance...

Gorillaz – Stylo Lyrics 14 years ago
After leaving The Gargoyle, we travel inland to the Stylo, which is a massive power core and the closest thing to a god here on the Plastic Beach. It is constantly pumping out energy - electric love - to it's children.

We are warned however, by a very human voice (far more human than the plastic things we've so far met), that the power can be too much. It's hard sometimes for this man to go on without drinking in the power, but it will overload him if he's not careful...turning his blood and bones into shiny plastic through it's heavy glow.

Gorillaz – White Flag Lyrics 14 years ago
This is the part in the story when a pageant is performed for us by the denizens of the Plastic Beach after we were just welcomed by Mr. Dogg. During the pageeant we run into other castaways/explorers like ourselves, but who've been here a little while now. They tell us how wonderful this place is compared to the wickedness of the real world and how they are planning to stay here (raise a white flag), surrendering to this place's allure.

Perhaps soon they'll gravitate toward the Stylo or end up in the shadow slums at the edges of the GlitterFreeze.

Gorillaz – Rhinestone Eyes Lyrics 14 years ago
OK...this album is growing on me like a fungus...I haven't been this into an album in a while...

This album tells a single story...a saga of exploring The Plastic Beach. Rhinestone Eyes is when they meet a being something like the Cheshire Cat. He's a sad being and he doesn't really like his surroundings, but he's very much part of them, pumped with energy from the Stylo and doomed to continually suffer the comings and goings of the entities around him.

I see this song as the lament of a person who sees the world of the Plastic Beach all around him now, but still sort of new, like when a system has just begun to hit full swing. He knows what the world USED to be like and he resents this new age. He could have remained in the past, but he came along because of a woman and now he's a joke, a scary primitive stone gargoyle, in the shiny new plastic world.

Um...I totally heard this as well. Glad to know I'm wrong. Unconsciously gay, and wrong.

I always heard this as "I'M a Casio..." instead of "IT'S a Casio..." so naturally, I saw this as "I'm something that creates art surrounded by the things I build the art with." This can still apply with "It's" I suppose, but it'd be more likely to be talking about a THING - a marvel among the mundane.

And yeah, I instantly saw this Casio as an oldskool little sampling keyboard. Something simple/humble, but with potential to create good art.

Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill Lyrics 14 years ago
This song seems to either inspire happiness or sadness in listeners...it bumps you one way or the other. Madoc commented on the track-by-track that he felt it was a sad song, but I can help but feel lifted whenever I hear it.

There does seem to be a sort of settling going on here, but "what you want" may not be a person. The togetherness is pretty strong, talking about going out to sea and such. Maybe the manatee represents the couple - nothing pretty, but functional enough and docile/happy. Manatees seem damn peaceful, so this seems to be in invocation of peace achieved through a settling (slowing/solidifying).

The plastic tree may be a simple symbol of perfection, actually. On the Plastic Beach, things are evolving to and from plastic...it becomes a replacement nature, and not in a necessarily bad way. This tree is a symbol of simple and efficient growth into the new nature.

So why "melancholy?" I wonder. Maybe the tree is the unique thing that we all look at and never achieve, the perfect union and transformation. So we go up to the hill, and always fail to be the what the tree is...but at least we have each other.

When I hear this song, I can't help think of some futuristic frozen post-apocalyptic situation (or at least an outpost on the frozen border-fringe of society). This melds with a certain scene in Bioshock with a rough madman hunting me through the frost.
