Joni Mitchell – Woodstock Lyrics 13 years ago
Britbach, your comment touched me. I lived through the whole hippie movement. I'm one of the few still proudly calling myself a HIPPIE- 'Happy, Intelligent Person Persuing Infinite Enlightenment'. I'm glad you haven't had to witness the atrocities I have to "GET IT". Most young people haven't gone through these experiences. That's why the "Peace and Unity" movement doesn't mean much to them. Every generation entering adulthood goes through an "Angry" phase. We found something to focus our anger on. It must be frustrating to grow up without a focus for all the energy produced from that anger. The Gulf and Iraq wars let you feel the frustration of your tax dollars being used to fund a war in which you may not believe. I don't like that my government has the right to take money from me and use it to murder people, especially innocent women and children. Many leaders of the Peace Movement, like John Lennon, have died. This generation hasn't built new charismatic leaders with the ability to focus and unify. I have no advice on how leaders could be erected, which is a shame. There are still many injustices in the world. My hope is that songs like this will touch more people like you, and start new movements.

Jackson Browne – Rosie Lyrics 13 years ago
The chorus is, of course, about him lovin self.
But the verses are just shy of self loathing!
Proms, wives, girlfriends, HAH! "Load in" is not a prom entrance!! Why would she be there so early, sniffin 'round for an opportunity? Does it need to be spelled out? OK - M U S I C I A N S...

She was standin there waiting for the band hours before they were even scheduled to arrive. She wanted to be first in line~~~ The roadies got off that truck and thought "YeeHaw". But right from the start, "She'd come for a star." That roadie never even had a good chance, but took a shot.
The sound man was hopin' to win her over with passes to the show, beer, and his Sparkling Personality, but the only real chance he ever had, was to hope the band's wives all showed up! As the night went on, he made the band "sound" incredible, which is REAL loyalty, since she"s sittin there lookin over what her options are with the lead... and to lose out to the drummer is just adding insult to injury, since they are usually the sweatiest AND the ugliest member of the band! I love Jack's sense of humor! He is the man!!!!

Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
I think you're definitly on the right track. I agree with a lot of the interpretations, I would just like to add a bit, to address the potential of this song.

I think this song reflects way most young people feel internally when they are contemplating suicide.

These lyrics can be used effectively if more people can KNOW that this is a very NORMAL expression of extremely difficult, complex emotional and physical awareness.
Having and/or expressing these feelings is ACTUALLY EXTREMELY GOOD AND HEALTHY!!!

When we're children, our whole world exists within whatever "family" we have. Our role models, caretakers, instructors, teachers, supporters, loved ones, and protectors are all the same few people. They all exist within a VERY small parameter.

When we "come of age", we start to move into our "Adult" lives. We move out and away from the protected and sheltered life. We see, usually very suddenly, that the scope of this "Real World" is HUGE!!! It's very disturbing. Before now, our birthday celebrations sre BIG DEALS to EVERYONE in our world. Every one is influenced and affected every day of their lives by any word we speak. We are heard, reacted to, by everyone in our whole world.

It's no little wonder when we step outside of HOME that we are surprized, STUNNED, at how loud it is. Its overwhelming! For the first time, we have to scream to be heard by people next door or across the street. We start to understand that we can't YELL loud enough to attract any attention from people on the other side of town. We realize we have a very small voice in foreign policy!

That's when we have these feelings of inadequecy, which we have never felt before. AT THIS MOMENT IN OUR LIVES we actually have the awakening that makes us feel so small and insignificant that we don't understand why we are here. How could our existence make an impression of any kind? On anyone? Anywhere? EVER?

People think these thoughts for the first time, and think they are worthless. It takes time for them to realize "THIS is why TV, RADIO, and MOVIES EXIST!" It takes a while for them to find ways to MAKE THEMSELVES HEARD! It takes TIME and WORK, but we ALL do have REASON for our existence. Even the smallest, seemingly insignificant jobs are part of the huge machine that we have to keep oiled and working! What happens when no one picks up your trash? Your whole life changes! Most people don't stop to realize the effect that one tiny part of our body (Let'say- the little bitty hole in the butt) stops working? TOTAL AND UTTER CHAOS THAT ENDS IN DEATH!!!!!

Please share this knowledge with any one you think it might help... and you can make a HUGE IMPACT!!!! ENLARGEN YOUR WORLD, too!!!!!

I am an "over the hill" Hippie (over 50) with more than a "touch" of gray, but i think the intellegence and depth of the translators on this page make me think you would like my rambling after All Along The Watchtower.

Grateful Dead – All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
I have been looking at song meanings discussions for months. It wasnt until today, when I made it to the Dead song sites, that I got insulted enough to realize how little people understand about the sixties and seventies music. It seems that people are trying to make Casey Jones about drugs OR a historical RR engineer. That misses the point. By miles.
So many people argueing about Hippies and Drug use! WTF are you thinking? I am one of the "Over 50" Hippies and I would like to tell you how I understand these songs. I would like to let you know that I used to smoke pot about every chance I got. I have taken many Hallucinogens over the years, also, just like a LARGE number of people in my generation, and I SHOWER BEFORE I START TO STINK!
These songs have blended the drug, historical, fantasy, and humanitarianism so beautifully, that they can never be separated. It would be like seperating the "left" and "right" sides of your brain surgically and expecting to survive and prosper in society using only one side. It would be like never using more than one finger to play a piano. Stop making it so "cut and dry" and "black and white".
My generation used the drugs, sex, and rock n roll so that our brains could better integrate ALL of those ideas and think "outside the box". We partied and played a lot, but when we woke up the next morning we started dialing up our engineer peers and worked out ways to improve the electronic amps with them so that we could Have sex, drugs & rocknroll even better the next night.
So: everybody is right! the songs were written by evolutionary geniuses who combined words to make a drug experience to night so awesome that, when you learned all the lyrics, you learned something about the past, and then used the lessons to make it a better world tomorrow.
It couldnt have been as sucessful without all three components. 'Cause the rock and roll demanded synthesizers, the engineers gave them the FIRST PERSONAL COMPUTERS EVER INVENTED!!!!
Are you starting to understand the importance of the hippies who loved, supported, and FINANCED the artists and engineers of of the world into the prosperous, modern societies of the future? Yeah, we may not be the brain surgeons and rocket scientists, but we play our part as the lovers and nurturors that keep the universe together. We are basically Duct Tape!!

Rusted Root – Lost In A Crowd Lyrics 14 years ago
The feeling i get from the lines "Yesterday i was lost- and you kicked me some food,- boy it was nice being here with you."... reminds me of being in a position of home & comfort, & reaching out to a visitor, or tourist, wandering around. Its making someone feel welcome. The welcome is represented as food, but could be anything that is helpful. The outcome is getting to know someone from another place or background. Reaching out & making contact with another human being is how we make our world a warmer place to live.

i hate to criticize, but the word FEEL is so wrong! the word is definitely FEAR. Fear for me, I will fear for you, and fear whistles in the wind. (How could FEEL whistle? that makes no sense at all.) It makes a lot of difference in the WHOLE meaning of the song. All that - plus, the lyrics are in the liner notes of the cd.

Rusted Root – Beautiful People Lyrics 14 years ago
I guess drugs are a really common way 2 commit suicide, whether it's the slow and shameful addiction or the quicker overdose, whether it be accidental or deliberate. I do think the leave a note and tell me why is the lamented cry of the loved ones who just dont get the reason for suicide. They are grieving for their loss and cant imagine how the deceased thought they (and the world) would be better off without someone they loved and valued. They are already worse off due to being sad and missing the person. I dont think suicide notes actually convince the friends and family left that suicide was the right thing to do!

Rusted Root – !#*!@ Lyrics 14 years ago
I see this song as one of the many 'green' songs for which RR is known. They use the sun as a metaphor for being alive and enlightened in many ways. The positive vision of the youth and/or counter culture vs. the oppressive establishment which never seems to 'get it.'

Journey – Faithfully Lyrics 14 years ago
This song pretty much tells its own story. I find it fascinating that it could be mis- understood- with Steve Perry pouring his heart out (whether he wrote it or not) and really conveying deep emotion. Anyone ever married to, or involved with, a touring musician has no problem understanding or appreciating this song.

Journey – Don't Stop Believin' Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is also listed on this site under the title Midnight Train. why is that? I think Steve Perry has a great voice. I still get frustrated when people are angry that the band replaced him. I think you should realize that they had no control over the reasons he left the band, so the ONLY option was to hire someone or quit playing ALL of the beautiful music the whole band had invested their entire lives in. I am glad i stil get to hear those songs.

Stevie Nicks – Leather and Lace Lyrics 14 years ago
I had this song played at my wedding 27 years ago. I married a musician, so we also had Faithfully, by Journey. We hoped it would be good omens, and so far so good. We have been happily married the entire 27 years as of April 1, 2010.
