@[threeleggeddog:29186] Which is a common theme in Harvey Danger songs.

The Beach Boys – Heroes and Villains Lyrics 3 years ago
Given Brian Wilson's history with schizophrenia, I can safely say that this song may be the closest thing ever recorded to representing a day in the life of someone with the disease.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 3 years ago
@[IndieLover:20375] I interpret the idea that one's shirt is tucked in yet their shoes are untied as someone either getting dressed or getting undressed. For the purpose of the subject of the song, I picture she was hastily getting dressed while leaving her house to avoid dealing with her father and his knowledge of the prior night. For the narrator, he was slowly undressing following some kind of service (it is a Sunday). Therefore, I picture each character in a different state of undressing/dressing which caters to their situation in a relatively fitting way.

Bright Eyes – Train Under Water Lyrics 4 years ago
@[saddle_creek_whore:19050] The subway he is talking about is more likely the one that connects Manhattan island to Brooklyn. He discusses not wanting to leave the village, which is in Manhattan, and establishes the subject of the song is in Brooklyn at one point. There's really never a reason to go to Staten Island, unless you live there, and if so, Staten Island is way more suburban. It would be easier to take a ferry or simply drive.

Elliott Smith – Miss Misery Lyrics 4 years ago
In the original version of this song, the lyric in the final verse was the following:

Next door the tv's flashing
Blue frames on the wall
It's a comedy from the 70's
With a lead no one recalls
To vanish into oblivion
Is easy to do...

These lyrics really hammer home the theme of depression that is rampant throughout this song. They also give a whole new meaning to the idea of vanishing into oblivion, of becoming obsolete and being forgotten. I really wish he kept the original lyrics.

I always heard the lyric as "And the doctor orders (drink until distractions just a waste of time)"

The Shins – Gone For Good Lyrics 5 years ago
@[chachi0222:6626] I like it better as "Floating around." To me, floating implies she is somewhat aware of the problems but is hovering in uncertainty while hoping they resolve themselves, similar to the narrator. "Fucking around" implies she's confident and committed and has no idea of his emotions.

Death Cab for Cutie – No Joy in Mudville Lyrics 5 years ago
I think the general disillusion of moving to NYC comes with the "trust fund hipsters." If you consider things in the days of Lou Reed the "fringe New York streets" weren't full of "trust fund hipsters," they were full of people with something to say, with a desire to contribute to art. But those days are gone and now we will never "bridge '66" again. I find similarities between this song and "Bixby Canyon Bridge," upon another listen.

The Postal Service – We Will Become Silhouettes Lyrics 6 years ago
No doubt these lyrics are a metaphor. There is no atomic blast, there is no end of the world, there is merely someone who's memory and appearance is no longer a happy sight, think an ex from a relationship that ended poorly. The narrator is trying to remember and cherish the pre-silhouette days, "screaming at the top of my lungs pretending the echoes belong to someone I used to know," but he knows its not a good idea to try and rekindle this relationship, "The news reports recommended that I stay in doors," and he kinda understands the pent up anger that led to the breakup, "Our shells simply cannot hold all our insides in and that's when we'll explode," so as a result, their relationship and all they ever were to each other is merely silhouettes.

The Walkmen – We've Been Had Lyrics 7 years ago
I think the most telling line of the whole song is "I hear the songs and the words don't change."

-Whether autobiographical or not, I think the message behind this song is that the ideas of old are not still relevant, while the hippie movement seemed like a good idea, in the modern world the hippie is bound to suffer. This "retro" image is merely an idea that success follows the same path for everyone throughout history when in fact things grow out of date and change quite often. We've been had because we expect old values to remain important, and while the lyrics of the old songs don't change, people do and those lyrics take on different interpretations.

Vampire Weekend – Horchata Lyrics 7 years ago
I feel like there is a middle eastern theme to this whole song, aside from just the mention of Masada. I picture a balaclava, a hood that covers everything but the eyes, equated with how females dress in muslim cultures. I also notice the whole aspect of pincher crabs in the sand and imagine a desert type landscape, also prevalent in the middle east.

Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 7 years ago
Its always so hard to get into a Bright Eyes song once the pretentiousness of the lyrics sets in, but without the spoken word intro, these lyrics hold up pretty well.

Okkervil River – Pop Lie Lyrics 7 years ago
I'm going to assume the position that this song comes from the point of view of the writer of the song. Perhaps someone found a slight exaggeration or a hyperbole in the narrator's lyrics and thinks they have evidence to crucify the "liar." It shows how powerful song can be, and how passionate people can get about it, but the song itself is a hyperbole of the fool who goes to the lengths to point out the "liar."

Deer Tick – Chevy Express Lyrics 7 years ago
I find the child murder part interesting, its definitely the most grabbing segment of the song, but I have a sense of the narrator pointing out other people's illegal activity too, like the local government pocketing road repair money while taking their time to finish a bridge, possible drunk driving(Beer cans rolling around), etc.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the murder was carried out by the narrator and someone else is getting the blame for it.

Elliott Smith – All Cleaned Out Lyrics 7 years ago
Waltz # 2 is about his mother though, when you compare the two I think this is clearly his second attempt at writing about his mother's problems. I think he never used this one for an earlier album because it might have hit too close to home.

Deer Tick – Chevy Express Lyrics 8 years ago
I wonder if the child murder was preformed by the narrator and his girlfriend but the cops are blaming an immigrant instead and perhaps the narrator feels remorseful.

The Band – The Weight Lyrics 8 years ago
I interpret this song in a rather different way, but I could be off. I believe Fanny is his wife who has killed herself and now he is burdened by "the weight" of consoling those who were close to her, or those who helped drive her to suicide.

Yes, basically Cologne in '27 is the world before World War Two, the bombs in '45 are the result of World War Two, and how much things can change in just 18 years.

The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio Lyrics 9 years ago
My interpretation of this song is that Matt Berninger was born in Ohio, and in order to form the National, he basically had to relocate to New York. I think these lyrics show his own reflection on leaving his family and his "bloodline" in Ohio for his own benefit. Its a somber realization, almost seems like he's considering himself the black sheep for being famous and successful.

Beirut – Goshen Lyrics 9 years ago
I do find your interpretatoin of the title interesting but Goshen is also a town in Westchester, New York and, seeing how the song before this is called "East Harlem," I wonder if that is what he means(or if he means both). Either way, this song gives me a very strong liking to Billy Joel, like I could sense this being a Billy Joel song if I hadn't known better. Definitely an interesting direction for Zach to take this album.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 9 years ago
Great interpretation! I always interpreted the "Fire is the devil's only friend" line as referring, possibly, to Jimi Hendrix(As he had a song named "Fire"). Also I wondered if the girl who "Sang the blues" was Carly Simon, and the fact that she "Smiled and turned away," showed how commercialized the music industry had become, where the blues went from music by the sufferers to being a capitalistic genre of profit. Just my thoughts, but really, great job!

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Counting Down The Hours Lyrics 9 years ago
I may be completely off here but I took this entire song to be a display of police over-stepping their boundaries. The "story of detainees" are what he heard from people who he shared the backseat of a cop car with, "Precautions...playing with a gun" explains the power police have and how easy it is to be abused, and I felt "I could deal with trying to process pigeons acting line their doves/But not with interference from the power lines above," was supposed to mean that police attempting to "keep the peace," but are really pointless in their duties is understandable actions from a human, but when the state(power lines above) make it your duty to respect such a gross over-statement of power, it becomes much harder to accept.

Harvey Danger – Pike St./Park Slope Lyrics 10 years ago
If you want my opinion, I think its basically a critique of a New Yorker's arrogance and ignorance to new ideas. coming from Queens originally, by Park Slope, which is a hipster populated location, I cannot tell you how many plans I've set up with my friends only to have them shot down at the last moment in favor of the same old routine(which might be driving to Park Slope along Pike Street). It really screams out how frustrating such an existence could be, where you're the only one who wants to experience life but your friends, whose friendship you value, hold you back in favor of the same old routine, and as a result, big plans are shot down as if they never even existed. I almost couldn't have said it better myself.

Voxtrot – The Start of Something Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't see any inclination of suicide. I see the song dedicated to a crush of his and he wrote it out of uncertainty, rather afraid of the future with her but knowledgeable that she is the only one he wants. Basically, he is in love with her and uncertain about how she feels towards him.

Wilco – The Lonely 1 Lyrics 10 years ago
And I just want to add that my original read of these lyrics suggested, to me, that Tweedy is bitching at a female singer who sings a song about being lonely, when its the fan who relates to the song that is actually the lonely one. Almost like saying she has no reason to be lonely with all the fame and fans she has.
