Interestingly, since ancient history animal spirits have played a role in shamanistic journeys. Considering this is about an acid trip, it is no surprise that animals were talking to the tripper. That is not to say the song is incoherent nonsense. What did the dormouse mean when it said, "feed your head!" Different from feeding your stomach, feeding your head could mean gaining knowledge and/or taking psychedelics. As if psychedelics are a mental food, required for a well-rounded life, that an oppressive government is keep from us in the name of production and feeding the military machine. |

@[absoftitanium:43047] Manmade global warming wasn't common knowledge in the sixties, but maybe he is some kind of prophet (unlikely). But I too interpret blue-eyed son as Jesus. The blue-eyed son could be Dylan himself, who had blue eyes. It could be his conversation with God. Or it could even be his literal father. He is telling him what he has seen of the world in his travels. Dylan's real father didn't get out much. A hard rain, could mean that difficult times are ahead. But maybe that better times are ahead when the rain washes away so much trouble. The numbers 12, 6, 7 all have biblical meanings. The natural things, mountains, oceans are in 12s representing God's majesty. The number six represents sin and human nature. Highways come up twice in the song. Once again with "highway of diamonds with nobody on it." Highways represent a construction of man, that parts nature. The highways of diamonds is a wasteful and ostentatious display of the wealth of a few. |

It's about being in love with someone who doesn't love you back, but still not hating the person who rejected you. God knows that love is true, but so does the devil, so no one person can ever decide for anyone else that anything was meant to be. "Maybe I just it wrong, express the feelings in a song" -maybe his feelings are wrong. "I didn't mean that much to you, I'm given such a tainted view" -His view is tainted because she means a lot to him, so it's hard to imagine the other person not caring about him. |

| This is no political song. No or is it simple. It's about being human. All your goals and dreams aren't met and bad shit keeps happening but you put on a facade that everything is OK so you don't bum everyone out. The friends you thought you could count turns out are not your friends. Your wife has free will and could leave any second. Nobody is anybody's friend. Your on your own. It's MGMT's way of saying everyone looks happy but they aren't. Being human can feel very alone sometimes, but this song reminds us that we're all in the same boat. Your life is a lie. | |

In my opinion this is the saddest song ever written. Notice how Katrina is alone in the video. "I used to think maybe you loved me, now baby I'm sure" She doubted this man's love in the past, but now has let go of doubt. "And I just can't wait till the day when you knock on my door. Now everytime I go for the mailbox, gotta hold myself down cause I just can't wait till you write me you're comin' around" She is anticipating someone who she has little or no regular contact with, relying on the moments when he randomly shows up. "I'm walking on sunshine" As far as I can tell this phrase has never been used in the english language before Katrina and the Waves, and it's meaning is not clear. After all "sunshine" cannot actually be walked on in reality. It is like saying "swimming on soundwaves" or "crawling on odor." Walking on sunshine is thus a very obscure metaphor, which is open to interpretation. I will note that there is a distinct minor chord struck at the beginning of the chorus, but musically uninclined people have trouble hearing it. "I used to think maybe you loved me, now I know that it's true" Reinforcing her stance that this man loves him, she is clearly seeking validation. "And I don't wanna spend my whole life just a waitin' for you. Now don't want you back for the weekend, not back for a day (na no no) I said baby I just want you back and I want you to stay." This final part of the verse sounds hopelessly desperate. After claiming she knows this man loves her, she reveals that he only visits for a weekend or a day on occasion, so what is she basing her belief on? "Walking on sunshine" beautifully illustrates the bitter sadness of living in denial. |
