Marina and the Diamonds – Seventeen Lyrics 12 years ago
The song wouldn't necessarily have a "more heavy note to it" if it was about rape. Have you ever heard Amanda Palmer's "Oasis"? That song has one of the cheeriest, upbeat tempos, but it's about rape (among other things).

I like your theory, but there is something in this song, like the tone of the lyrics or something between the lines that suggests that this song is more of a romance between two people instead of just a "mother/son" relationship.

It seems like you want to project your own experiences onto this song. The Fletch story seems more likely.

Depeche Mode – Little 15 Lyrics 13 years ago
This song seems to be about a relationship (friendship or otherwise) 15 year old boy and girl/woman. "As time goes by
And when you've seen what she's seen... you will", makes me think that this is either an older woman or a girl who has had to grown up faster and wiser beyond her years. This song is a bit sad as the boy is in love with this woman, but she doesn't seem to reciprocate his feelings back. Also, the lyrics: "She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile" make me think that this older woman (or girl that is old beyond her years) wants to feel the innocence that this 15 year old boy has. That's all that she is wishing for; to see with his eyes, to smile with his smile. He wants to make her feel better, but he doesn't quite understand her predicament with the situation, and how to feel exactly, since the boy is younger (or at least, more immature).

'I've got a blister from touching everything I see' = Herpes from "touching" everything that she sees? AKA sleeping around.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Geek U.S.A. Lyrics 13 years ago
Ok, I know this might sound weird, so please hear me out!

I think that this song might be about Courtney Love. The reason being? Well, I was listening to Doll Parts today, and after listening to the lyrics, I thought about this song. I think this song is about Billy and Courtney's relationship. Look at the lyrics from Doll Parts and this song:

"I want to be the girl with the most cake
He only loves those things
Because he loves to see them break
I fake it so real, I am beyond fake"
(Doll Parts, Hole)

"She really loves to break
Her dad says its OK
She really loves to break
And give it all away

Her ma says she's afraid
What more can she fake
She really needs to break
And give herself away"
(Geek USA, SP)

I'm a die-hard SP fan, and every time I've heard this song, I'll have to admit, I thought it was about a relationship with a girl. I even thought about Courtney Love, although I didn't even know why until now. Doll Parts was written in 1991. Also, another interesting fact that I found in wikipedia:

"The song was recorded as part of the Live Through This sessions in October 1993 at Atlanta's Triclops Studios, where The Smashing Pumpkins recorded their second album, Siamese Dream and it is widely believed the studio was recommended by Billy Corgan himself."

Tori Amos – Sweet the Sting Lyrics 14 years ago
Cinnabar is what is used to make quick silver, or mercury. Mercury is also known to cause madness to insanity. Perhaps her "cinnabar juice" is like some sort of madness potion. So in other words, he's wants to know if her crazy ways will make things worse or better for him. There's a very strong sexual connotation in that line and with this whole song if you read between the lines.

Depeche Mode – Blue Dress Lyrics 14 years ago
Whenever I listen to this song, I always think about either some guy who has hired a hooker and makes her wear this particular dress, or just a lover. This is a really creepy song to me, not very romantic unless you're into fetish songs. He seems to only be getting off either on how the girl looks in the dress, or the actual dress itself, which is the only thing that really turns him on.
What "makes the world turn" is sex. Just like how money makes the world turn, you can also use sex (sexual favors in exchange for goods and services or even money) to make things happen in life.

Nine Inch Nails – The Becoming Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this explanation, even though it's probably not what Trent thought. But it especially makes me think of cyborgs when you hear the mechanical breathing over the "Annie" part, and all the electronic noises. Really creative. :)

Tori Amos – Professional Widow Lyrics 14 years ago
I thought the "just like my daddy, yes/selling his baby, yes" part was about her father trying to "pimp" out his daughter as well. I remember hearing about when Tori was around 13 or so, in order for her to "get into the business", her dad was hocking out demos to record companies and having her work in a piano bar at such a young age. Seems like he's very much a "stage-dad" type. This song could be about Courtney Love as Trent Reznor wrote a song "Starfuckers" and referenced CL in the video for it. Both her dad and Courtney could be seen as "starfuckers", one who will do anything for fame. Although, interestingly enough, Reznor wrote "Starfuckers" after Tori released this song.

Tori Amos – Father Lucifer Lyrics 14 years ago
Haha, I'm from Hoboken too and if Tori had the cash back then to buy a condo here, maybe she's trying to come off as "wealthy" in the song? It is indeed a very yuppie thing to do- buy a condo in Hoboken.

Tori Amos – Silent All These Years Lyrics 14 years ago
This is almost exactly how I've "seen" this song, and I feel that Tori probably didn't write the whole song about rape. It seems too varied to just be about that. I could be wrong, but for more than one person to see very similar interpretations of it, I'm sure it's a song about the insecurities of a girl, and more importantly, the strength that comes from her eventually.

Tori Amos – Silent All These Years Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is filled with various meanings: her rape, her relationship with her father, and her relationship with a man she is involved with. Overall, it's a song about a women who is a "pushover" in various situations and does find the courage to speak up about it until the end of the song.

"I got the anti-Christ in the kitchen yellin' at me again
Yeah, I can hear that...I got something to say you know but nothing comes,Yes I know what you think of me you never shut up, Yeah I can hear that"- This line for some reason reminds me of her explanation for the song "father Lucifer" where her father believes that she is calling him the devil. For some reason, in other Tori songs, she seems to talk about how pushy her father can be at times. This line just gives me the visual image of her sitting in her parent's kitchen, arguing with her father, about her career (at the time) or something, but then she's "saved again by the garbage truck" i.e. the argument is distracted by it and stops.

"But what if I'm a mermaid?
In these jeans of his with her name still on it" - This part makes me think that the girl is now talking about a relationship that she's in, possibly not with her boyfriend, but maybe more of a casual sex-partner or something that she has a crush on. Obviously, this guy is crazy about some other girl or likes some other girl better because he has another girl's name on his jeans. Whether or not he's with that girl at the moment is unimportant (i.e. as an ex-girlfriend or present one) because in any case, he clearly still likes her. The girl in the song feels a bit jealous and says "but what if I'm a mermaid?" i.e. what if I'm someone more magical/special than this girl, hmm mister? The mermaid line can also apply to everyone else in this song since it's in the chorus.

"So you found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts/What's so amazing about really deep thoughts?/Boy, you best pray that I bleed real soon/How's that thought for you?" - Again, this part is about the guy that she likes. Either he's found another girl he fancies or it's still the same girl written on his jeans. He seems to be he type who's into really deep-thinking, philosophical women and clearly doesn't think the girl in this song is. She counters by saying, "you'd better pray that I have my period next month, how's that "deep" thought for you?".

"My scream got lost in a paper cup/You think there's a heaven where/Some screams have gone?/I got 25 bucks and a cracker/Do you think it's enough to get us there?" The girl in this song has been obviously holding in her emotions and thoughts and tries to vent by "screaming into paper cups". "I got 25 bucks and a cracker..." seems like a cute, almost child-like attempt to try to "buy" her way out of her passiveness.

Tori Amos – Virginia Lyrics 14 years ago
I remember writing a research paper in college for my Native American History course about the topic of Christianity and Native Americans. The lines, "she may Betray,All that she loves, and even wait, for their
Savior, to come." Sounds very much like Virginia and her inhabitants, switching from their Native religions to Christianity, i.e waiting for the savior (Jesus Christ) to come back to earth. Many Native Americans today, in fact probably most, are Christians.

To me, this song talks about the land of Virginia, (and possibly America as well) and how "she" has changed over time. From the beginning with Native Americans up until present day, with "ghetto pimps and presidents". Virginia is used and pimped out, and has been, over the centuries since "the white brother" came. "her body open, as will his hand"- Virginia keeps giving more and more of herself to the people that live on her, especially the white settlers, despite the fact that it almost seems that they are taking too much from her.

The last line, "oh Virginia, you can't remember, your name" is incredibly haunting. To me, it symbolizes how "Virginia" the land was once called something else 500 years ago, by the people who originally lived there, and that over time "Virginia" has forgotten her original name. It reminds me of all the places in the US which were once called something else for hundreds of years, possibly thousands, only to be changed to what we know them as today. Not really having their "true and original" names anymore.
