I don't necessarily agree with this song being about gangs. I think it's somehow a synthesis of Zach's childhood and the path that lead him to becoming a musician, probably even how his life changed after forming RATM. This line seems to confirm some of my thoughts (not that it's all that backs up my point of view): "I gotta nine, a sign, a set and now I gotta name" "I gotta nine": good reviews by magazines and general music press "a sign": a contract with a record label "a set": could be the possibility to play gigs "and now I gotta name": like he was nobody before all that, and now all of a sudden he becomes a part of the society A hell of an angry song, by the way |

As far as I'm concerned, it's true that Zach's father (who suffered some kind of mental disorder) would lock himself up along with Zach (Zach being obviously forced to do that) during Zach's weekend visits, but i've never read about other kind of abuse, neither physical nor sexual. Either way, I agree that this situation has a lot to do with these lyrics |

I go with the idea of the song talking about a guy who is going to have a kid before expected, then freaks out and kills it (or forces his girlfriend to abort) |

I think it's more literary than metaphorical. He's just a poor boy from a poor family, who killed a man and was sentenced to death by electric chair... I'd dare say Ride The Lightning has a lot to do with this GREAT song |
