Fleetwood Mac – Crystal Lyrics 12 years ago
Underrated indeed. This is without a doubt my favourite song on the album.

Anaïs Mitchell – Old-fashioned Hat Lyrics 13 years ago
Actually, some time after posting that comment I read an interview in which she explained that this song was about her husband, but that "Sometimes you look at someone you know so well, and for a moment you don’t even recognize them.

It’ exciting. I hope that happens our whole life." So yes, it's like that feeling of falling for them all over again. Now that I understand those lines in that light it just makes me love this song even more.

Anaïs Mitchell – Before the Eyes of Storytelling Girls Lyrics 13 years ago
Absolutely! This is definitely one of her best songs, in my opinion.

I had caught the references to Oum Kalthoum and Scheherazade, but had no idea about the T.S. Eliot paraphrase. That's interesting, I'll have to read that poem. Thanks for explaining that!

The Smiths – Frankly, Mr. Shankly Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah, now that you say it, I can really see the parallels!

Bon Iver – Creature Fear Lyrics 13 years ago
This is either the stupidest or the most clever interpretation of a Bon Iver song I've come across. I can't quite decide which one it is, but now the thought of this comment makes me smile every time I listen to it.

Anaïs Mitchell – Your Fonder Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree about Anais' ability to write really good melodies, but I have to disagree about the "not the deepest lyricst" part. While this song in particular may not be spectacular lyrically, but I find her other stuff incredibly poetic.

Jeff Buckley – I Know It's Over (The Smiths cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
Just like it breaks my heart when I listen to Grace and he sings
"The rain is falling and I believe
My time has come...
It reminds me of the pain
I might leave, leave behind"

Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics 13 years ago
Completely agree, I love those two videos! Though my favourite live version of The Wolves remains the Sasquatch festival one.

Bon Iver – Lovin's Fool Fools (Sarah Suskind cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
I really hope he records this as a bonus track or something on his new album, because his cover is just so wonderful (infinitely better than Sarah Suskind's original if you ask me)

Turin Brakes – Other Side Lyrics 13 years ago
No comments yet? I absolutely adore this song. The imagery in the lyrics is just so beautiful, especially the part that goes

I want to be
An old man,
With a suntan
And a watering can,
As happy as a heatwave,
As honest as a window...

Turin Brakes – Full Of Stars Lyrics 13 years ago
I can see how the "Odyssey" reference fits, but somehow I don't think it's really relevant in the lyrics, even if it was intended. To me this song just tells a story about love & loss, and the "light" is simply an image of death or the afterlife as the narrator imagines it.

Stephenie Meyer didn't invent the word 'twilight' you know.

Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm sorry but I do not see your point at all. Those kinds of lyrics are precisely what you DON'T ever hear on the radio - they're vivid, they're sometimes brutally honest, but they're endearing because they're about real life, about real people.

This is hardly the "generic" stuff about kissing in the rain and dancing all night long, and all those other clichés we've all heard too many times.

Wolfmother – Vagabond Lyrics 13 years ago
When I listen to this song, what I picture really is a bunch of hippies in the 70's smoking weed in a park.

I don't think 'innocence lost' refers to rape or prostitution, but more to a coming-of-age process, when you feel you can be completely free, but at the same time you're trapped by people's expectations. So I think the "please don't make her do the things against her will" line shouldn't be taken too literally; to me, if it means anything at all, it's more along the lines of being pressured into sex (or whatever else) rather than actually getting raped.

Anaïs Mitchell – Wait For Me Lyrics 13 years ago
This is probably my favourite song on the album after If it's true. I just love the contrast between Herme's really spooky description of Hadestown and Orpheus' longing "Wait for me..." as if none of that mattered as long as he could be with Eurydice again. If that's not true love, I don't know what is.

Anaïs Mitchell – Old-fashioned Hat Lyrics 13 years ago
Clearly I remember when/ I used to scratch my poems/ on the backs of other lovers in/ the darkness of my mind/ Back before I made my home/ in the marrow of your bones...

Those have got to be some of the most beautiful lyrics I have heard in a very, very long time.

The only thing about this song that bothers me is that I don't understand where the "say what was your name again?" line comes from, because the whole rest of the song seems to be talking about a long-standing relationship. Oh well.

Bon Iver – Creature Fear Lyrics 13 years ago
I completely agree with eneyeseekaywhy. I mean, come on, people, when Justin Vernon himself says (and I quote) that "those lyrics are still vague to me in a lot of ways," don't you think it's a little presumptuous to claim that you found a "hidden meaning" in the song?

Just enjoy the music, and stop over-analyzing everything.

Why on earth would it be tourists and not Torahs? Especially considering that Justin majored in religious studies:

Noah and the Whale – Slow Glass Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah, the references are pretty obvious here, though I think it's about the song 'Blackberry Stone' more specifically, not 'Rambling Man,' since it's the one that was also released before the actual album (which came out more than a year after The First Days).

Also, it just makes so much more sense in my opinion, since Blackberry Stone is very obviously the bitter end-of-relationship song with lines such as "You never did learn to let me be," to which the reply is, of course, "I never tried to change you, Honey I'm your biggest fan."

Which is funny because as much as I love Laura (I have been a fan way before I even knew who NATW were), now I can't help but feel more sympathy for Charlie than for her. Maybe it's just that I've listened to the First Days of Spring way too many times.

Laura Marling – What He Wrote Lyrics 14 years ago
Probably my favourite song on the album. So, so, so beautiful.

"He wrote, I'm low, please send for me,
But I'm broken too, and spoken for, do not tempt me."

My thoughts exactly!

Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics 14 years ago
I hadn't thought of that before, but now that you say it it's rather obvious.

"Down to the lockdown... boards, nails lye around" those would be the "stacks" of this song, and of course the references to crows in both songs.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 14 years ago
Wonderful interpretation, it just makes so much sense!

I just love the wonderful ambiguity in all of Bon Iver's songs and the fact that you can read so many things into them, even the presence of a female speaker.

The Script – I'm Yours Lyrics 14 years ago
I read somewhere on youtube that it was about his mum. At first I thought it was a love song too, but when you think about it, this makes so much more sense.

He keeps saying how he feels small and weak, just like a child. And then it makes sense too that his mother would be reassuring him, saying "he's still the soldier in her eyes," and that she should be the "only angel in his life" (as opposed to girlfriends, I guess, who just come and go.)

And of course, if it's about a mother-son relationship, it gives its full meaning to the title "I'm yours."
