I like songs that make me think about life.
Some of my favorite musicians are Kurt Cobain, Andre 3000, Maynard James Keenan, Louis Armstrong, Trent Reznor, Pete Loeffler, Andrew Wyatt, Frank Ocean, King Kendrick.
Love Rock, Rap, Electro, GOOD MUSIC
Glass Animals – Black Mambo Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I think this song is about heroin abuse |
Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics | 9 years ago |
Have not heard a song of this lyrical complexity in a while, the emotion and themes explored make this a classic for me. His voice carries a stronger passion than most artists in his genre. Watch his SNL performance and you can tell. So excited to see him live in Portland 10/19! |
A Perfect Circle – Passive Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I don't know Brendon, If he wanted to talk about his drug use I think the lyrics would be more inwardly reflecting instead of talking about someone else. |
Kendrick Lamar – HiiiPOWER Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Weird how a great artist like Kendrick gets no comments on his lyrics. I guess that says a lot about the hip hop community here at songmeanings. And whats up with not including the intro lyrics??? EVERYBODY BUT THREE FINGERS IN THE AIR the sky is fallin the wind is callin, stand for something or die in the morning. Section 80. Hiipower Too dope. A song embodying the struggle of coming up and staying on top in spite of conditions. |
Robert Delong – Global Concepts Lyrics | 10 years ago |
totes. |
Metronomy – The Look Lyrics | 11 years ago |
This song to me is speaking of youth. All the lines of running around the town, causing trouble, dancing, reminds me of living during your prime. "Kinda think you said You'll never get anything better than this" As in this is the best time of our lives "This time's the oldest friend of mine" The memory of our youth will be our best friend. |
Robert Delong – Global Concepts Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think it burns my sense of truth to hear me shouting at my youth I need a way to sort it out. -Its no use to regret what you did in the past, you have to lean from it After I die, I'll re-awake, redefine what was at stake from the hindsight of a god. -At death the person is reborn with a chance to look back with perfect hindsight on the past. I'll see the people that I use, see the substance I abuse, the ugly places that I lived. -The persons whole life races before their eyes and at first they see what they regret. Did I make money? Was I proud? Did I play my songs too loud? Did I leave my life to chance or did I make you f***ing dance? -The dead man asses' what he did in his life to fight against regret, what did he do with his life? He hopes that above it all he made you fucking dance. Symmetry exists only in our mind. Our brain is *shaping* squares. So I woke up with entropy defined but the forms still linger there, in my head. -The brain creates the symmetry and order we see in our lives and in the world around us. Entropy is the scientific theory that over time all ordered systems turn to chaos. The brain is a chaotic system that seeks to find order, redefining entropy. Forms is a philosophy of Plato that says all humanity judges life and aspects of life off of the true or perfect Form, example: we all experience happiness but what is the true standard of "Happiness" or our perception of beauty and what is truly "Beauty". In his enlightened state the Forms still linger in his head. Global concepts uncommon the world round but we share a mortal frame that if you can hear reacts to every sound but no two people move the same. -These global concepts or Forms are uncommon around the world although we are all human. However our bodies respond similarly to music by dancing. Everyone moves differently but we are all brought together through our love of the music, and everyone is brought closer and personalized at the same time. or did I make you f***ing dance? -SO in making you dance he has reached an enlightened goal and is satisfied with the life he lived despite his regrets. |
The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think you hit the nail on the head with that interpretation. There is two women involved the SHE and YOU. He can only offer YOU physical love but his heart belongs to SHE. Or maybe hes just a super misogynist and is confessing to it by saying he gives his heart to one woman for comfort and uses a girl on the side because there is no room for her in his cold heart |
Modest Mouse – Shit Luck Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think this song is about apathy, "This plane is definately crashing" Like we are headed in a shitty direction but "my heart is slowly dried up" meaning he became apathetic to the situation once he accepted it. |
Modest Mouse – Long Distance Drunk Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I never get tired of bullshit like this |
Modest Mouse – Trailer Trash Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Avenged Sevenfold – Beast and the Harlot Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Revelations. Some pretty crazy shit |
Modest Mouse – Dramamine Lyrics | 11 years ago |
First off, love the song, love the band. I think this song has a lot to do with nihilism, the belief that life has no purpose or meaning. The lyrics are hard to decipher and the guitar drowns out most of what he is saying, like it doesn't matter what he is saying in the end it means little whether you receive the message or not. The song has an emotion of anger and frustration, which are exactly the emotions tied to the knowledge that life has no purpose. |
Miike Snow – Silvia Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Love your take on the song, you seem like an intelligent person. So here is my addition, I'm not sure exactly what the song is about but I have a valuable insight; Silvia comes from the Latin root for forest. Silvia actually means spirit of the woods. So he could be not talking about a woman at all but something far greater seeing as how woods fit in with the animal jackalope that the men burn in the woods during the video. Forests are associated with darkness, perhaps a moral wilderness he has lost himself in or killed forever? |
Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics | 11 years ago |
@Slikere well said @awakenedblood88 next time you listen to this song and trent screams "there is no fucking you there is only me" try imagining him directing that statement at God. |
Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics | 11 years ago |
@tigerx2374 pretentious teen? fuck off you sound like my parents. I have had enough experience in my lifetime to at least be overpretentious. @seanbay0120 wow that was a lot to read glad you took the time to respond. So I'm going to keep this short: lets be honest you ripped me apart - kudos since its been two years since my post I think I have matured so let me clarify the ongoing experience I get from the song. I get the feeling of a man who has lost touch with who he thought he was due to revelations. He realizes that "there is no you there is only me" - I took this to mean, along with the lines, "I just made you up, to hurt myself" as an imaginary friend the child created. Imaginary friends symbolize to me inner parts of our minds that we make fake realities in order to entertain/console/understand ourselves. But in the end knowing that it was all in our head and hating that. Granted I've never had an imaginary friend so I am talking out of my ass. More recently I feel the song implies a sort of conscience, a childlike conscience without the support of reality. This defined who he was but slowly he began to see himself differently until he could "see right through himself" as if he realized how fake he was and he hated it. I like your interpretation of "he is in a bizzare new state where the only thing that seems to be tangible is himself". I understand now your connection to the Matrix. Thoughts can be like computer programs and can run our lives. Getting an outside perspective saves us from this which I believe you connected nicely to the song. I don't know why I relate this song so much to coming of age probably because I am seventeen and its the only life experience I have to go off of. I used to look up to my dad as a kid even though he was rarely around and a raging alcoholic. When I reached the point in my life when I decided to step out of this mind frame and into another more bitter one of he can go fuck himself it was a major shift and I began to see things differently. I tend to remember that shift when I listen to this song. |
Jay-Z & Kanye West – No Church in the Wild Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Frank Oceans chorus is about perspective, power is an illusion humans create. God is an illusion humans create to keep humanity in check. "Love Is Cursed by Monogamy" Like we could give so much love to all our neighbors but society tells us to give it to one. Religion tells us to give all our respect to One, so humanity doesn't respect each others opinions, the pious cling blindly to faith. Socrates and Plato were great thinkers, all western philosophy is but a footnote of Plato, yet they were pagans. They understood the gods as more of a story, a lesson to be learned and remembered, but not to live by. |
Ellie Goulding – Lights Lyrics | 12 years ago |
rate this +1 if you never knew the lyrics but would just high pitch whine-mumble along with the chorus. |
A Perfect Circle – Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song gives me chills every time I hear it. When the song slows down and you hear screaming and yelling it just takes me back to when I was a kid hearing my parents fight at night when my dad would come home... then Maynard does that raspy whisper "Go Back To Sleep!" same thing my mom would tell me. Its crazy... Everyone commenting fuck society and government and the Illuminati I get where you are coming from but damn the song is not about any of that Maynard has always done songs on the mind and emotions. The song is about how violence all around us dulls us to the point of no longer decent human beings. We count bodies like you would sheep while trying to fall asleep. Each body counted sends us farther into slumber, farther from where we should be. But the thing is we like it. All of this desensitizes us and creates an alter ego of someone who is apathetic, who protects us and kills the conscience inside so we can make decisions based on selfishness without feeling anything. But the one making the decisions is not us. Rather, a shadow of a man we created with ruthless ideals we turn to in hard times. And we like him, and we listen to him when he tells us to fall asleep. |
Modest Mouse – Lampshades on Fire Lyrics | 12 years ago |
First Impressions Isaac seems to be talking about mans capacity for apathetic destruction. Love the song I cant really discern what he says in those final lyrics either. |
Linkin Park – The Catalyst Lyrics | 13 years ago |
hmmmm yea never trust limewire... |
Incubus – Anna Molly Lyrics | 13 years ago |
these lyrics are off, he says wait there is a light there is a fire illuminated attic then he says the same thing but defragmenting the attic. also he says i could care less not i couldn't care less. jus sayin. |
Blue Scholars – Burnt Offering Lyrics | 13 years ago |
favorite song of the album. love it when he talks about Jesus being white and God being a male, these parts when he is talking about the misconceptions of religion really speak to me. always had a problem with the pictures of a pale Jesus. |
10 Years – Shoot It Out Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This is your typical media pushed single to promote an album, no doubt the record company made him write a simpler song that sells well so they make more money. But he is trying to tell us his dismay at this in these lyrics, its genius. The only mystery in these lyrics is who is he "feeding" and why. So I think hes talking about the record company, who is destroying something he loves (making music) by making it more about the money. Shoot it shoot it out cus they want it now (give them the next song quick) Suddenly fame has lost its attraction (he would rather write his music than get caught up in fame) Feeding the wolves, dont you know better? (Despite his feelings, he is doing it anyway, giving them what they want) Brilliant song gotta give props to Jesse |
10 Years – Shoot It Out Lyrics | 13 years ago |
totally agree fluffyshem, this song does seem to have straightforward lyrics and him just giving people what they want (simple lyrics) speaks to the theme of the song. This is your typical media pushed single to promote an album, no doubt the record company made him write a simpler song that sells well so they make more money. But he is trying to tell us his dismay in these lyrics, its genius. The only mystery in these lyrics is who is he "feeding" and why. Linkin Park – The Catalyst Lyrics | 13 years ago |
how did i ignore what you said? I may have been in a pissy mood when i wrote that so let me clarify what i was trying to say: Linkin park used to be a mix of metal, thrash, and hip-hop. They were very original and people responded to that and they became very popular. But they changed over the years, which they should because who wants to hear the same thing over and over, im just pointing out that in my opinion they didnt improve as a band when they changed. I understand now that it is a concept album and that this song is a climax to an overall theme, props to linkin park for that. Saying this song is the best song ever by linkin park? thats absolutely STUPID. You could argue is was the best album conceptually or lyrically, all im saying is that with this new album they didnt improve musically. Play this song alongside Somewhere I Belong or The Little Things Give This Away, it just doesnt compare. There are other songs on this album that are great, blackbird for example, but seriously, there is no argument backing this up as one of linkin parks greatest works. |
Eminem – Lose Yourself Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The soul's escaping, through this hole that it's gaping This world is mine for the taking Make me king, as we move toward a, new world order A normal life is borin', but superstardom's close to post-mortem Anyone else find these lyrics creepy and out of the ordinary? Hes talking about selling his soul for the music industry saying superstars are practically dead because they have no souls. |
Chevelle – Forfeit Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i know this song is about mosh pits but to me it has a broader meaning of anyone who has anger management and even though they want to fight to prove their right everyone is telling them to forfeit instead. "Refrain from talking Solves our problems Medicated could do some good Find a way to relate or just shut up" This seems to be talking about advice to an anger management patient |
Regina Spektor – Hero Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i think this song is talking about several different things that are intertwined. But i really cant pull them together, or maybe im to lazy to. But what is interesting is the line, "Open wide here comes original sin" this refers to adam eating the forbidden fruit, open wide to eat the fruit, in turn here comes original sin. |
Linkin Park – The Catalyst Lyrics | 13 years ago |
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! good one. cus u must me joking. this is no way ther best song to date, theme is cliche, lacks originality, not the greatest beat. honestly if the rest of the album turns out like this then its just mediocre. I get what you guys are talking about tho people are just mad because the linkin park of Meteora and HT were producing new exciting music, ther stil creating some great songs they just moved in a different style and direction that seems worse than what they used to be. and to be honest, there are only a handful of linkin parks new songs that really excite me. Chester has always been good at lyricism, hes never had really complex lyrics but they have always been original an for some reason these lyrics have let me down. The instrumental is horrible. mainly because they built their beat off of claps and clicks and bass. SO GAY. its not hip hop, not rock, just crap. |
Linkin Park – The Catalyst Lyrics | 13 years ago |
same thing happened to me, u downloaded it off of limewire rite? well i did an its a remix, the song ur probably listening to is not the original |
Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i respect your love for music, and i hope you respect what i am about to say you nitpik to much on the fine points of the song. music is meant to be felt, enjoyed, supposed to set you free and let you experience emotions. some of the things you say are true and great insights, but you drag on to long and ruin the song when you start relating it to the matrix. When trent wrote this song, i dont think even he put as much thought into it as you did. If you want to think this far into things, look at philosophy or read a book, music has always been more emotional than intellectual, especially if you look at the people writing it. That said, i think you fall to far away from the meaning of the song in your comments. If i can offer my opinion: you said "To give a truly complete analysis of a song you must genuinely feel you are experiencing what the artist experienced in making the song" If you really put yourself in trents shoes, you can easily see himself writing this song about the loss of childhood innocence. in the song he talks of an imaginary friend he created to help him cope with the ugly realities of the outside world as a child, but eventually grows up and loses his imaginary friend and falls into the real world. when you are talking about being in a world of machine dominance over humans, i took that whole stanza to mean him growing up and toying with the ideas that maybe everyone isn't nice, that maybe your dog ben didnt run away but died, and toying with these ideas he is picking at this scab, and eventually steps into the adult world. a world in which he sees things he really shouldnt see. as far as the last line "not as pretty on the inside" you could take this for face value and say that he is talking about how people put on an outer shell of a fake person to seem nice but on the inside are ugly. or in my interpretaion how adults were nice to him as a kid but now no one treats him nicely anymore because he is grown up and sees how ugly they really are. Could also be about how he crossed a door earlier in the song into the real world, becoming on the "outside", and now he sees people aren't as pretty as they were on the "inside", the inside being his childhod reality so yeah. please reply |
Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics | 13 years ago |
ummmmm nope NIN wrote this song johnny cash decided to cover it because he felt like this song fit his feelings exactly. the only reason he changed the lyrics was to make it more family friendly and has nothing to do with religion. swing and a miss |
Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics | 13 years ago |
? why dont you mean beastiality |
Tool – Aenema Lyrics | 13 years ago |
actually... Maynard expressed many times his disgust towards LA in interviews. and he calls LA a hopeless fucking hole so... he is saying it to LA |
Tool – Aenema Lyrics | 13 years ago |
u should listen to hooker with a penis |
Chevelle – Peer Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Soooooooo yea. i think i undestand the song, let me explain: The whole song is about his conscience, but he calls it his peer, because it seems to be a part of him and the two together make a decision. I'd like to leave this In my youth (He would like to live his life like he was when he was young, when he didnt have a conscience. When you little you dont know right from wrong, you cant blame a 4 yr old for doing a bad thing, he knows no better) Pick me up on your way (here is interesting. He is saying that his conscience picks him up when he is older and leads him, as in when we get older we understand right from wrong and from that point on can NEVER really do bad things because we know its bad and we get that feeling that kills us when we do a bad deed and dont fix it. So our conscience in a way controls us, picks us up and takes us on ITS way.) Send away virus (also very interesting. Our conscience sends away viruses. that little nagging in the back of our head when we do bad is our conscience's firewall against bad deeds. Repeatedly making the wrong choice kills our conscience, some people kill innocent people and dont bat an eye, they have killed their conscience, so to keep this from happening, our conscience sends away viruses with this guilt.) Drink sight is water Drink sight is water (ummmm idk) Watch him sell mugs to bikers To make a million dollars Place you stamp here Send out love letters (tells of a man who is doing anything to get by like selling mugs to bikers, but most importantly, it is an honest living) C'mon enough said The skin on top his hands Has dried to red The words, want them touch them The nerve, why are you here (this is where it gets good. he is talking of a man who makes an honest living with manuel labor, his hands are red from hard work. cmon enough said is shutup conscience i hear your words, i wish i could feel you. the NERVE of our conscience to tell us we are doing the right thing when it is us, not our conscience that suffers. Hes hands are red in pain, not his conscience, yet its telling him hes doing the right thing? this is the intro to the angry part of the song.) (right here it breaks, this is the point at which he is fed up with his conscience, his peer, so he gets angry. acoustic, sweet melody with smooth voice, then later edgy guitar riffs, drums, screeming) Back off peer I am on top of this Back off peer I am on top of this back off I need to make decisions And I want to leave yea back off Banned (BACK OFF CONSCIENCE. lol he is breaking down, im tired of my conscience, it is soo much easier to live life without one, but you force compassion on me, and because of that look where i am in life, and YOU have the nerve to stick around? im fed up. at this point he decides to push his conscience back, drop a hard, honest life, and live a life of ease by doing bad things and not being pestered) So the song is about: a story of a man fed up with busting his ass for others and getting nothing in return. he wants to be bad from now on but cant do it with his conscience controlling him. or it could be about anyone really who decides its time for a little me time, tells their conscience to back off while they do a selfish deed and dont want the nagging feeling later. |
Chevelle – One Lonely Visitor Lyrics | 13 years ago |
cant help but add my piece, when he repeats am i alone in here? it seems hes not talking about being alone in a relationship, he sings it with such passion, hurt, and bewilderment, i think hes talking about his heart He says am i alone in hear? as in the loss was so big he doesnt feel anymore, all he is left with is a shell, no heart. hes alone inside himself without himself, because who he used to be is dead. |
Ben Harper – Ground on Down Lyrics | 13 years ago |
...also lol i could go on forever Some things that are worth noting that relate to the song: There was a prophet called Malachi who came to the Israelites condemning them for "empty worship". For going to the temple and praying, then going home and causing harm to others. He says that true worship involves a good life as well as a good prayer life. This song shows the same message. Mohandas Gandhi once said "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Perfect for the song, so many people who consider themselves christian yet do not live that way. But then again, we are all only human, im sure ben harper isn't perfect either so maybe im just holding people to way to high of a moral standard |
Ben Harper – Excuse Me Mr. Lyrics | 13 years ago |
could also be to humans in general. Thers bad people and good people and we share the same planet. |
Ben Harper – Ground on Down Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Great song, great poetic lyrics. When you hear him sing this song, a blunt kind of anger comes out in his voice. Hes calling out people who think that they are doing good but really are just doing bad. Hes calling out someone saying they are working their way from the ground on down, as in their intentions are bad, and in doing what they intend to do they are just digging themselves deeper. Also, he condemns people who talk good but dont actually do good: "but even when I'm on my knees I know the devil prays" hes saying when he prays and asks God for things he realizes bad people do the same thing and realizing this the only difference is in who actually does good things later. "cause there's good deeds and there is good intention they're as far apart as heaven and hell" Hes saying theres a big difference between talking righteously and actually living a righteous, good life. Hitler thought he had good intentions, so did Ghandi. Ones in heaven, one in hell. What i get out of this song, regardless your intentions, religion, beleifs, whatever none of that counts to whether or not you are a good person, IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW YOU ACT, WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND, WHO YOU LOVE, TANGIBLE THINGS. powerful message |
A Perfect Circle – Passive Lyrics | 14 years ago |
In my opinion... this song is written about Maynards mom Judith who was in a comma for a long time. After suffering from a brain anuerysm she became paralyzed an then fell into a comma. Maynard is describing his experience of seeing her in a coma after trying to convince her to give up her religion. He talks about the docter saying she is dead but really he is "ever the optimistic one" that she will "wake up" and continue the argument on whether God is real or not, becoming his "perfect enemy". But the problem is that Judith probably never argued with him about God but rather used what seemed to be "Passive aggressive" tactics as in she probably just prayed for his salvation and never became his enemy, which is not what he wanted. This disappoints him so he yells "wake up and face me, don't play dead" and later says "you fucking disappoint me". It seems to fit and makes the most sense to me since his mother is a central theme in his music. Maynard is a fucking genius. |
