The Stone Roses – Something's Burning Lyrics 16 years ago
Reni plays it, though it's not a Xylophone, it's a Vibraphone.

Sly and the Family Stone – I Wanna Take You Higher Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is not about anything other than the feeling a great uplifting piece of music, such as this one, can give you.

Sly and the Family Stone – Poet Lyrics 16 years ago
On the face of it, appears to be a very simple song by Sly about himself. But I can't help thinking there HAS to be some sort of statement made in a song that is all about him being a poet/songwriter, and then running out of words less than halfway through the song.

Anyone?

Sly and the Family Stone – Runnin' Away Lyrics 16 years ago
Great comments Zazenpan, spot on. It's Sly, in a rare sober moment, writing a song to himself and getting his sister to sing it back to him. Knowing the way Sly's story subsequently turned out, the last few lines "Another day/you're farther away/ha ha ha ha/A longer trip back home" are unbelievably poignant. He knew what he was doing to himself but carried on down the "shorter cut".

Sly and the Family Stone – Luv n' Haight Lyrics 16 years ago
If you've ever got drunk or high in a bid to escape depression or anxiety, listen to this song when you're "on the up" and it makes absolutely perfect sense. You know your troubles are still there, but you can't feel them as strong, are numbed by the chemicals and for an hour or so just don't care about anything.

Possibly my favourite song of all time.

Sly and the Family Stone – Time Lyrics 16 years ago
It seems to me that Sly Stone had an obsession with time in the early '70s. So many of his songs mention it. I don't think the verses are really about anything, but the general vibe of the song is a frustration with the way things are panning out as time inevitably marches on, in a depressing way. The wah-wah'ed organ at the start, the full-of-dread thick sound that comes in towards the end and general vibe of the song suits this depressing premise perfectly.
