| Arcade Fire – Half Light II (No Celebration) Lyrics | 8 years ago |

One of my favorite Arcade Fire songs. Always thought the first stanza should have been "Now that San Francisco's gone I guess I'll just pack it in Wanna wash away my sins In the presence of my [kin]" though. |

@[jilliom:13600] Totally agree. Everyone else seems to think this song is about drugs? The number of card references in this song is pretty unmistakable. |

Mostly correct, but I still hear: If they should run into the dark, we can't sweat: one takes one by the hand, Let them craw into the logs, Let damp ground change the hue on their pants. It all fits into a theme of kids playing outside... |

| I personally don't think so, but it's really interesting that parallels can be drawn there. | |

| Really think he says: "damp ground change the hue of their pants," which also makes sense given the context. | |

I think this song is about a father speaking to his wife about how frightening it is to watch their kids grow out of the dream like state of childhood. The first verse seems to be set during a walk in the woods (probably in the fall --leaves in puddles, wearing pants, dark), and expresses a desire to suppress the urge to be over protective (don't sweat-- they have each other by the hand) and just let the kids be kids. The last line of the first paragraph references how wet pants turn darker in color. The last line of the second set is about how kids will put muddy hand prints on each others backs. If they should run into the dark And we can't sweat one takes one by the hand Let them craw into the logs, Let damp ground change the hue of their pants excited and screaming and their voices go wild and rise with the birds mating up in the pines and down to puddles that breathe (bleed?) covered by leaves with mud they'll make prints on their backs. ??? And will it be just like their dreaming? " I'm " their " I'm The second verse gives me an image of the two kids playing at night and then sneaking into their parents bedroom to awaken their father. He tries not to worry that they are playing at night without his watchful eye ('they don't have our eye'). When they come into his room they do silently like ghosts, and he wakes up to the 'two shadows that watch with delight' who are silhouetted by lantern's light coming in through the window. The chorus comes again next, and plays on this half dream state that he just woke from: Is watching them grow just like he is dreaming it? Is growing up just a dream? If they're awake till the dawn Well, we won't fret that they don't have our eye The ghost came crowding around And when I woke you slept there on your side From our window two lanterns Draw signs on the night And light up two shadows that watch with delight And I want them to be who they will be Ooh (OR?) to be more like their dad and will it be just like their dreaming? " I'm " their " I'm The final lyric is more straight forward. He seems to be talking to his wife about the age when their kids no longer are influenced by them, and if she is frightened by the thought. It's also about letting them do so. When influence is threatened Maybe I should let them Maybe we should let them And I have a question: ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? ARE YOU ALSO FRIGHTENED? Won't she call you a dreamer No one should call you a dreamer No one should call you a dreamer No one should call you a dreamer I'm a bit confused to the meaning of the last part. Maybe this is a reference that the process of growing up seems like a dream to both parents and kids, but that it is based in reality and therefore not really a dream. This is a beautiful song. I love this album in particular for its wholesome lyrics and emphasis on appreciating the important aspects of life (my girls, brothersport, etc...) |
