Sublime – Tim The Dinosaur Lyrics 3 years ago
Cover of the Ziggens song from their album Wake Up and Smell... I guess Brad sees it as heroin addiction, calling heroin a dinosaur in Pool Shark, but there is no evidence any of The Ziggens used heroin that I know of. I think it was just a song about a dinosaur, if an imaginary one. I like the Ziggens version better because Brad didn't screw up the lyrics, but Bradley still sounded good.

Sublime – Tim The Dinosaur Lyrics 4 years ago
Bradley loved the Ziggens. He loved Big Salty Tears and obviously liked this song as well. There's no telling when he covered it, but he obviously used a dinosaur as a metaphor for heroin in Pool Shark, but that does not mean The Ziggens were strung out on H. I highly doubt they did any drugs if you have heard their albums.

The Ziggens – All the Fun That We Missed Lyrics 4 years ago
This is the song that inspired Bradley Nowell to write Badfish. I guess that's pretty noteworthy. If you haven't checked out the Ziggens yet, I suggest you do. They were tongue-in-cheek funny and a great band that didn't get a lot of the recognition they deserved. Their "first" album, Wake Up And Smell... was probably their best and the whole thing is excellent.

The Ziggens – On the Way Lyrics 5 years ago
Another greatest hit off the Ziggens discography that has no comments. This song has a country feel to it, but is really great with great lyrics and musicianship. There's a reason The Ziggens were Bradley Nowell's favorite band. And it wasn't just because they were close friends. He truly loved their music. And so do I, but not as much as Sublime and a few other bands/artists. The Ziggens are a great band to listen to when you need a change of pace and they've got so many good songs and a few great ones. They're also very funny and don't take themselves so seriously, which is refreshing.

It seems like Big Salty Tears and Pistol Pete are the only songs most people may have ever heard from The Ziggens. Maybe Tim the Dinosaur as well. Also check out their surf songs, the ones that mostly have no lyrics, but are totally dope.

The Ziggens – Call It Quits Lyrics 5 years ago
I realize the Ziggens weren't as popular as many bands, but no comments on this wonderful song? Another Ziggens classic song that is really deep and reminds me of Pistol Pete. This was a rare time when The Ziggens were being serious and not having fun with their songs. "Do you wanna call it quits? Are you tired and sick? Oh baby do you want to call it quits?"

This is one of the best Ziggens songs. Of course, I also first heard this from Bradley's acoustic album, but I now have most of the Ziggens' albums and I love their music. They're very tongue-in-cheek and are very funny and also great musicians. And their live album is amazing. Check out their other songs, their other albums. Their Greatest Zits album would probably be a good start.

Sublime – Badfish Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is deep, profound, and a masterpiece. It is a song about relationships, alcohol, marijuana, and overall mortality. It has a melancholy feel to it, as Bradley is feeling down about the world and "the reef" is the only way he can keep himself stable. That and cheating on his girlfriend. Not having money, being into reckless partying and sleeping around, and alcoholism/marijuana and anything else he can get his hands on to numb the pain he feels inside. It's about finding happiness in self-destructive habits. "Ain't got no time to get old" shows that he knows the way he is living will eventually lead to death, so he's not worrying about death, but getting through life.

Some of the most brilliant musicians have been the most troubled. This is a prime example and it is such a shame that he died so young, but at least he lives on through his music, especially songs like this that give you an idea of his state of mind. A great song, and so ambient, but also filled with dread and depression. Gotta love Sublime, they were legends and had a lot to say, and Bradley was the heart and soul of the band. He pretty much knew how it was all going to end, though.

The Ziggens – Just the Way You Aren't Lyrics 6 years ago
The Ziggens kill it on this track! They've always been a fun, funny, and not too serious band, but this was a great parody of pop love songs. The Ziggens are really good, and hardly anyone has listened to their catalog. Needless to say, it's really good for the most part.

This is such a great Ziggens song. One of my favorites. It is about "Pistol" Pete Maravich, but it's also one of their best songs they've ever written. I'm surprised they didn't get a video out of it or something. I don't think they ever did. Very underrated band.

There's also the original version of this song that is about 6:41 long that has some sick rapping in it. Something about trippin' like the Mad Hatter and other really sick rhymes. It's one of his best early songs, no doubt. Check out his new album from 2014 called Akeda. It is arguably his best work to date.

Sublime – 54-46 That's My Number/Ball and Chain Lyrics 9 years ago
I know you guys might find this shocking, but Ball and Chain was supposedly a Vandals cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE-_D2h-9nk Not a big Vandals fan, but Bradley did cover Dachau Cabana from them, so it's not too far-fetched. Brad covered or sampled possibly every punk and reggae artist of his time and before. At least he mixed up his covers and made them his own. I'd say that around 75% of Sublime's songs either are covers or have tons of sampling in them. That's why they called Brad the Boss DJ. He brought all this music together. Check out Rewind Selector if you already haven't. Or just look up all the songs that are on that list.

A partial cover of Don Carlos's Pass Me the Lazerbeam. I remember hearing the partial version of it on Everything Under the Sun and thinking, there has to be more to this song, so I looked it up on Youtube and found about twice as many lyrics. This was a few years ago. Still one of my favorite songs he's done. The flow of this song is just so smooth and just awesome. This song showcases Brad's freestyling ability and also his ability to cover a song, but make it his own entirely. He's always been one of the best to do that. He can take a song from a completely different genre and turn it into a masterpiece on his end. A true genius.

Sublime – Boss DJ Lyrics 9 years ago
Every song Brad sings seems to be about drugs. I know he made this song when he was at the height of his addiction and all, but I know that part of it has to be about being in denial about his drug use. "Cause on the microphone is where I go to get my fix." "I'm funky, not a junkie, but I know where to get it." "Rumors be flyin' around my town, but it's just stones and sticks." He's trying to tell someone he cares about that he's not a drug addict, even though everyone around him is saying so.

By the way, Bradley was the Boss DJ in the most literal sense. He mixed and matched samples from so many different genres of music. He found it easier to express himself through music..."Things would be so much easier to say upon the microphone like a boss DJ." He was using heroin for creativity and it looks like it worked...for awhile. Then he died. I'm wondering if it was worth it. It may have killed him, but it also contributed to some killer tunes that he probably wouldn't have come up with. He paid a steep price and he never got to witness his mainstream success, although he did create the album along with his bandmates. Had he not died, I'm not sure his final album would have been as commerically successful, but it would have been successful among his fans and new fans alike. RIP Bradley. Until we meet again...

Sublime – Romeo Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm really surprised that they didn't release this song on any of their first 3 albums. This one and Trenchtown Rock. I know TTR was supposed to be on 40 oz., but there wasn't enough room on the CD/cassette. This song should have been on 40 oz, but it wasn't, so they threw it on SHS. It's definitely a great song and has the feel of Roots of Creation at the end, plus a little Don't Push. It's a shame Brad had to die, because now there's Mr. Sellout Rome running the band, and I could never see him create anything close to this, or any Sublime song for that matter. He's a fat douchebag who is only in it for the money. And it seems to have paid off really well for him. He's got a solo career as well now. He very well could end being the next Justin Bieber. ;)

Sublime – Burritos Lyrics 10 years ago
I would have to say this was about either depression or drug withdrawal, but most likely a combination of both. Bradley was someone who most likely suffered from bipolar disorder. He was up, he was down, and he self-medicated with every drug under the sun. It was Brad's own way of dealing with his depression. It's also possible that his heroin use caused such severe depression once it wore off that he didn't want to get out of bed the next day. I wouldn't know, because I've never used it.

The ending of this song is so unique. I've never quite heard anything like it, except in the original version of this instrumental, which is called Fighting Blindly, which was Sublime's first real song from what I understand, and is worth a listen, especially the live version, where he says at the beginning, "This is about the drunkest I've ever been."

Sublime – Thanks Lyrics 10 years ago
There is a longer version of this track, but unfortunately it is very hard to find. They go on to thank a bunch more people/bands/etc. On SHS, they did a dub of that full-length Thanx track, but with no words at all! It would have been so easy to just put the words in, but they didn't. You can find it on Youtube, under Thanx (Cassette version). Either way, great for Sublime to thank everyone who helped them and all the musicians they borrowed from.

Sublime – New Song Lyrics 10 years ago
Here's my take on this song. First of all, it sounds amazing, even though the sound quality is a little off. It's smooth and has a solo that is so good, there aren't words to describe it. It is about drugs, but I don't know for sure if it is about heroin. He supposedly didn't do heroin up until a certain point, but the title is New Song, so it could have been a late addition to the CD, after he started heroin. Either way, we all know it is about some kind of drugs, but it's also a double-meaning, talking about busting rhymes and how that also takes up all his time.

Bradley suffered from depression, and was most likely bipolar. That's why he self-medicated. He also felt like he had to be larger than life. He was leading his band, his fans, and he felt he had to live up to all the expectations of sex, DRUGS, ROCK AND ROLL. He did drugs because he thought it would make him more creative, and for the most part it did. But heroin killed him. Thank God they finished the self-titled album (Killin' It) before he died, or else he may have never gotten the recognition he deserved.

If he was still alive today, who knows how many great albums would be out there? But, anyway, everyone should spread Sublime's music throughout the world. Especially the songs that DIDN'T appear on MTV, or whatever. Just to show the range and variety of influences he had. If you delve deep, you'll see quite clearly that Bradley was the BOSS DJ, no question. Nobody could touch his sampling ability, his covering ability, and how he could take a good song by someone else and flip it on its head and make it amazing.

Sublime – I Love My Dog Lyrics 10 years ago
Cover of Bad Brains' I Luv I Jah. It's pretty obvious that he wrote it about his dog instead of Jah. He just took the song and changed the lyrics, which is fine with me. The thing I didn't like was they actually put an I Love My Dog Dub on Everything Under the Sun, which made no sense because there were already very few lyrics in I Love My Dog.

Amen brother! Too bad both of them died before their time. Brad's death was inevitable, but at least he left quite a legacy. Nirvana is always recognized as the more popular band, the better band, because nobody talks about Sublime in the mainstream unless they have truly heard his full catalog. I've heard 3 Nirvana albums and he's nowhere near the talent of Brad and his band, but it was popular because that's what was being played on MTV, not Sublime and his DIY songs.

Sublime – 54-46 That's My Number/Ball and Chain Lyrics 10 years ago
You couldn't be more right. Sublime is not so-called "frat boy music." It is soulful, touching, intelligent. He was in touch with whatever he considered to be the divine, as evidenced through numerous references to God. He was probably in the top 10 of musicians in his generation, although most people don't see it because they don't know his catalog. Secondly, they don't know how and where he got all his dope melodies and lyrics. Or at least some of them. He borrowed from a bunch of reggae and hip-hop artists, although he put a whole new spin and flavor on their timeless wonders. Bradley was the boss DJ, there is no one who was more in tune with musical intelligence.

Sublime – Badfish Lyrics 10 years ago
Dude, that is the most in-depth analysis I've ever heard of this song, and I find it stunningly accurate. It has so many meanings and metaphors, and that's why I think it's one of Sublime's most popular songs. It's very soulful, and also one of my favorites. What's funny, but not really, is the line "Ain't got no time to get old" actually came true. He knew then that he would eventually go down the path of self-destruction, although he was already there in some facets. I always have the feeling he was far more prophetic, especially about himself, than most people are today. Like someone else said, he was an old soul, and this communicates well in this song.

Counting Crows – Raining In Baltimore Lyrics 11 years ago
I think what this song primarily is about is that Adam Duritz needs a fucking rain coat. Of course it is more complicated than that. There are tons of metaphors here that many of you have already taken a stab at. It's about loneliness, loss of a relationship, how when it's raining in Baltimore, 15 or 50 miles east, he is most likely thinking of going there, and thereby needs a raincoat. He also needs a lot of other things, like a phone call ( someone to talk to), a big love (a new relationship?), a sunburn(maybe a vacation to a tropical island?), and many other things that he thinks will set him right. It is a very melancholy song, and the tone of voice is very sad. At the end of the song, he starts to get more upbeat ("Maybe I should buy a new car..."), which would think he is finally getting over whatever depression or loneliness that he is in.

Finally, this song got on here. It doesn't have any profound meaning, but it is a sick bass line and a really rare bootleg of Sublime's. When I first heard this, I was like, "Wow, this is an awesome groovy dub tune!" Bradley is a little hard to understand in some parts, but his amazing voice still makes the song shine. I'm glad someone figured out the lyrics, because there was no way I could understand everything he was saying, but the overall sound of this song, with the bass, drums, and guitar make it one of my favorite Sublime dubs/freestyles.

Depression and addiction...he has had a lifelong battle with addiction to Rx drugs. Luckily, he didn't die from it and I'm not sure if he's clean and sober, but that is definitely what the song is about. It's also about depression and loneliness. Possibly drug-related isolation, as most addicts live in their own little worlds where they isolate themselves from those who disapprove or do not understand. Powerful song here.

I think this has to do with a mid life crisis, where some girl (or Adam himself) went home to figure out what to do next with their lives. Obviously, because whoever he is singing about here had problems that brought her back home. Great song, great lyrics...

Drunk by noon, but that's okay, I'll be president someday. Wasn't that George W. Bush's campaign slogan. I hope he paid royalties to Sublime for that. ;) Really great song, great sound, great lyrics, although they are a bit depressing at times. But we all feel like that sometimes. "Wake up in the morning and it's hard to live..." I'm just glad these songs are still relevant, it being 18 years since this particular album came out. To think this album was mostly self-produced in a crack house using a 4-track recorder, I'd have to say that they did pretty well for themselves before they got signed. There's such a wealth of songs from before they got famous, and 99% of them are just great.

This song is about surfing and is a metaphor about his drug use, although he wasn't on heroin when he first wrote this song, unless he was just an intermediate user at the time. He wasn't a full-blown addict when he originally wrote this song, but I suspect he saw himself going in that direction. "When you grab ahold of me, you tell me that I'll never be set free...I'm a parasite..." One of the deepest and best sounding songs Sublime ever made. The joy and sadness are one in this song, which makes it very beautiful. I'm just glad he lived as long as he did and was able to at least achieve some mainstream success, although he never saw it. He at least knew it was coming. RIP Brad, I might try to channel you someday and start my own band. ;)

Sublime – Garden Grove Lyrics 12 years ago
This was a song about how Brad's life sometimes isn't all roses, even though he is a successful musician. I guess he was living in his Tweaker Pad, and getting yelled at by his dad. He was feeling depressed every day, saying he's happy when he's not...and, of course, finding roaches in his pot, and sticking needles in his arm. He was a junkie, but he was ashamed about it when he realized he couldn't quit. I lost a coworker and friend to drug addiction a few months ago, and although I didn't know how much he was using, it was heroin and pain pills that killed him...but I never knew for sure he was on drugs, just suspected it. He reminded me a lot of Brad, and we had a great time at work...I just wish he would have gotten help before it was too late. I wish Brad would have kicked his addiction for good, but old habits die hard...

One of their best songs ever. You can't quite match that dancehall reggae feel in this song. And he goes off into Spanish for at least half the song, and it sounds really fucking good. He is the only dead musician that I can truly say I miss. Way more than Kurt Cobain. Brad had such a soothing voice and amazing talent. It's too bad he couldn't stay clean. Sublime was a lifestyle, and he paid for it with his life, but thank God his music still lives on, and I find another bootleg song almost every week that I hadn't heard before. Keep rocking out to Sublime, music this good will never die.

Fucking amazing song. You can't beat the energy in this song. It's got such a lively feel to it. Bradley was a legend, and I wish the mainstream music world would recognize him as such. Some people do, but he's never on any top 100 lists, at least not on MTV or VH1. He was so great, such a charismatic front-man, and the other two guys could play instruments really well. Eric Wilson and his awesome bass lines. Bud Gaugh and his drumming... How they came together is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I doubt there will be a band in their genre(s) ever again that has music anywhere near as good and diverse. Brad was the master DJ, and nobody could touch him.

Sure, this is their most popular song ever. It's not their best by any stretch of the imagination, but I would have to say it was one of their more marketable songs, like Date Rape, which received heavy airplay as well. It's a great song, and one of their better ones, and its message is clear and profound. Lovin' is what he's got. Life is too short, so love those you have. Because you might get run over or you might get shot... Take all of your money and give it to charity. And, of course, living with Louie Dog is the only way to stay sane. All these life lessons in one song. I love Sublime, and even though sometimes their lyrics weren't the best, their songs always sounded fucking awesome, which is why they are my favorite band ever. I would have killed to have been able to hang out with them. Too bad I was only 10 when he died...

I still really like this song, but I like Ball and Chain from the Boxset better now, and also 5446 from the boxset better as well. That's only because they are a bit more lively, although there aren't any horns on Ball and Chain on the boxset, you can really hear the passion in Brad's voice as he sings Ba da da da da da da, during when the horns would have played. Fucking great songs, Sublime is number one in my book.

Sublime – Eireen Lyrics 12 years ago
I just downloaded this song off of Youtube. It's good, but it is simply a freestyle that Bradley was known to do from time to time. I wouldn't say it measures up with many of his other bootleg songs, but it is still much better than the mainstream music you'll see out there today, and nobody can beat that sweet voice of his. The story behind this song is kind of sad. Eireen was his girlfriend or something, and he saw her on the cover of a porno. "What happened Eireen? You were so clean..." It's pretty self-explanatory from here. Worth a listen, and definitely worth having.
