Man Man – Life Fantastic Lyrics 8 years ago
"And I'll trip a lie, fandango
my legs are sheer elastic
it's how you envelope me
I'm like a corpse in plastic"

Kudos to anyone who can figure out what that means, except that when someone is murdered, often the body is wrapped in plastic. (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/4697683.html) So maybe the speaker is saying that he's a grisly sight and needs to be hidden, i.e. enveloped? I'm not sure.
But the rest of the lyrics seem to be about tragedy in general.
I looked up "black umbrella." ("You hand them black umbrellas and tell 'em that the world is dying") There's an organization called Black Umbrella which builds disaster plans for people who are unprepared for emergencies. So maybe it means you give them emergency plans, you prepare them for a coming disaster, i.e. "the world dying."

"it's how you hide your cards
it's how you dress your scars
and let them breathe (breathe)"

When tragedy occurs, you have to pretend everything's okay to calm everyone else, like the children who are crying. You have to hide your real emotions, your cards, and dress, or cover, your scars, i.e. the pain you're feeling.

This is personallly my favorite song on the new album. Amazing lyrics, amazing song. Very moving.

Modest Mouse – The Fruit That Ate Itself Lyrics 9 years ago
I like your explanations, everyone. They all make sense. But really, do you think that every song Modest Mouse wrote, they meticulously made every lyric have a hidden, deep meaning?
Once I read an interview with Jeremiah Green about how Modest Mouse's practices went. Somebody would lay down a beat or a riff or something, and they'd just "fuck around." I don't think all of their lyrics really make sense in their minds. And I think if you really over-analyze lyrics, they always will make sense. And some songs I think are just meant to set a mood. Exit Does Not Exist, for instance, portrays being trapped to me. This song seems like it was just Modest Mouse fucking around with Jeremiah Green's awesome drumbeat, Eric Judy's calm bass riff, an. Isaac's incessant yelling overdubbing his low muttering. All of which are extremely pleasant to hear. For me at least.

Built to Spill – Hidden Track Lyrics 9 years ago
Considering how stupid and cliché the lyrics are, I'd say they never meant to put out an album like this. It sounds like a parody of mainstream music in general.

I think you should spend more time discussing the lyrics than correcting them and saying "This song is awesome!" We all know that, that's why we're looking at the lyrics.

Anyway, I think the lyrics are really cool. They're basically about not giving a shit what anyone thinks and just doing what you want to do.

Yeah, it does kind of sound like Long Drive. Doug Martsch's voice is distinctive, and so is Isaac's. And the reason it sounds so full is because Built to Spill likes to overdub guitars.

The Venetia Fair – A Man Like Me ! Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is a display of emotion. It's about a man who was cheated on by his girlfriend, obviously, but the lyrics are arranged in an ingenious way. He asks the girl how she can think she's worthy of him, says she's a whore and a liar, but the singer is screaming the words as if he's in pain. And he says he's broken-hearted. He's not just angry, but hurt that she would do such a thing. He's taking his comfort in trying to hurt her back. But he tries to make it look like he regards her as trash. It's really a beautiful song, lyrically.

Modest Mouse – Red Hand Case Lyrics 9 years ago
When I think of red hands, I think of two things:
Someone being caught red handed
That old Bugs Bunny gag, where he says "Do you want your palm read?" and he paints the guy's hands red . . . Yeah, I don't think Isaac wrote a song about that.
Maybe it's about a guy who was caught for something and put in jail, and he's being a smart ass about it. Think about it. "Blame it on the red hands weight" It wasn't me, it was my hands! Ha ha ha! Then the guard tells him to shut up. "Getting hateful, a little fed up?" he mocks. He is again told to shut up. He then jokes, "Hey, I need a carton of cigarettes." The guard loses his temper and slams him against in the wall, or something, and now he wishes he had stayed shut up.

Modest Mouse – King Rat Lyrics 10 years ago
You really should base your criteria on the song actually having a meaning. It should probably be "fed a fix by that cop fuck's smile" because the song is about the fucked up american justice system. What the hell does "lab by the collar" mean? It's "your laugh by the collar" because, imagine someone laughs at you and it's so tempting to grab them by the collar and swing. You can't. The law is in your way. You can't give someone a good whupping anymore. No matter how much they are being an ass. That's what brock is saying. The law is based on if you did something that it was written in this book not to do, not if you did something wrong. I think this may have come from brock's dui-charge-turned-attempted-murder case. He spent ten days in jail because somehow the story was screwed up. And now he is looked on as a criminal of sorts.

I agree, the song is epic.

Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics 10 years ago
I completely agree with bobbodian. Parents groups can go fuck themselves. Also sirgarycoleman. Modest mouse is so above break-up songs.

No one else shares my idea that this might be about native americans and europeans clashing. The "verbs and nouns" part I tkhought should have at least given a hint that this song has something to do with ridiculing western culture. Guess not. They say "I didn't die snd I ain't complainin' I ain't blamin' you." The indians were a major factor in keeping the europeans alive, but once they had learned how to survive in america, they were "done done done with all the fuck fuck fuckin' around" and decided to pull out their guns and shoot the people who helped them. That's what you get for being a different culture.

"You were so true to yourself you were true to no one else." that's what you get for not being true to christianity.

I heard it differently but your lyrics make more sense. I though it was "if food do you please" but "if food needed pleasing"makes more sense, and sounds like something modest mouse would say. Like the phrase "good news for people who love bad news." Seriously, try to actually cimprehend that. Would that be good news or bad news?! Like that. Sucking seasoning off food would please it less, don't you think?

Modest Mouse – Gravity Rides Everything Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeah. Isaac has never been one for anything that isn't very concreye. I tend to agree with him. What the hell is fate anyway? Just makes certain things happen and we can't explain why it's there . . . Like gravity. That would work if fate existed. But wait, fate just makes things go in certain directions so everything will fall into place. (whoa. I swear i just said that not even thinking about the lyrics) but gravity is consistent. It makes things go toward the center of the earth, always, eternally. So gravity isn't that much like fate. If fate existed, and it made everything go toward the center of the earth like gravity, we'd be crushed. Interesting analogy, my friend. But doesn't work. I give you a T for trying.

Modest Mouse – Life Like Weeds Lyrics 10 years ago
It's hard to tell most of the time whether modest mouse songs are about philosophy or not. (I seriously can't find any rational sense within the lyrics of "never ending math equation" or "night on the sun" hey, i just realized that was a paradox. Night on the sun. Anyways i'm getting sidetracked.) however, i believe this is one song in which brock's mind was on life and death and the end and the beginning and other big philosophical things that make our heads spin. This life is like weeds. We grow and are cut down, and then we grow again. Our hearts are made of strings to be pulled; have you ever noticed how quickly humans adapt to their surroundings? And as soon as we have adjusted, life pulls the rug out from under us and we have to adjust again. You're sad because Aunt Gertrude died. Then you're angry because your coworker messed up and got you in trouble for it. While you're sitting at you're boss's desk getting chewed out, you're not thinking abiut poor late Aunt Gertrude. You're hoping against hope that your boss doesn't lower your salary because you've been saving up for a nice gift for little jimmy. In this life like weeds, you're a rock to me. You are merely a bit of scenery in the background and you din't affect me. I may think I love you, but when you die I will move on and maybe forget about you entirely. All this talking all the time and the air fills up untill there's nothing left to breathe. We're always talking. We talk to one another about the gricery shopping, abiut the weather, whether our sons and daughters are getting good grades. Either way, we'll die, the world will end, and a difference won't have been made. As for the you're the dirt ill breathe part, i don't get that.
