This is definitely about Ryan. He was Brendon's best friend, so of course he loved him (not in a romantic way though), but just saying that he meant a lot to him and they both had to ruin their closeness, so now they are only 'friends'. It's pretty obvious. It's also about The Young Veins as well, what with "They will never be the same/They don't look like me/They don't sound like me". This is an awesome song. Definietly one of my favourites off of Vices & Virtues, which is saying something, as overall it is a brilliant album! |

I love this song. It's lovely, and so catchy. I think this song has two possible meanings: 1) It could be about a lover, one that you've had since the very beginning, I don't know, but, I think the second meaning is much more likely. 2) It's about Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat's friendship, and the progression of the band. It's lines like "If I had to pull you out of the wreckage, you know I'm never gonna let you go" which are really meaningful. The "two kids" will be Alex and Jack, as they've been best friends since they were kids. But also "Span out of control"/"We were always destined to explode"/"There's no way out of this so let's stay in" is evidently the success of the band. "When it breaks, we fix it" will be when the band go through troubles, but they see them through. So I absolutely love this song. This is why I love All Time Low. They are honest to a fault when it comes to lyrics. Such a lovely, beautiful song :) |

This song is not called 'State of the Art', it is called 'Art of the State'. It's an intro to the album, so isn't technically a full song. However, I think it has a simple meaning. Because Dirty Work marks a new chapter in the career of All Time Low, as it is their first album on a major label, I think it's about how they want to start over again, as if they are a new band, as everything now is new to them. New label, new sound, new fans. It's an exciting yet scary time for them I guess. |

The lyrics to this song are simply stunning, absolutely beautiful. I don't think it's about a relationship, but more about a friendship. Like, it sort of explores the true depths of friendship. We all know we'd be nothing without our very best friend, the one person you can tell anything in the world. Almost like your twin, but not. I think the title "The Only Hope For Me Is You", is so true and honest. I've never really thought about friendship in its bluntest terms, but this songs says it all. "Disasters that we've seen" I think refers to just things you've been through with a friend. My favourite part of the entire song though has to be: "And if we can't find where we belong, We'll have to make it on our own." That's just beautiful. Just so honest. Hit me like a bullet those lines. So very apt for me and my friends, especially one of them. |

I think it's about someone who has locked themselves away from the rest of the world, and kind of living in a fantasy world of their own - a bit like Avoidant Personality Disorder. They have probably had a tough old time in life and have decided to play it safe, and sort of 'stay on track'. I actually love this song, so much. It's like they are pretending that everything in their life is ok, hence the 'big facade to hide the cracks'. Putting on a front, but not knowing how much longer you can keep it up. It's really sad, it sounds kind of desperate, the way Alex sings it :( Especially love the lines: "Sometimes the sickness is the cure" "You're searching so hard, you've lost yourself" "It takes a big facade to hide the cracks" "Regrets a waste of time and plans will change, some for the best, some for the worst, you know you can't always get your way. I think this song has a double meaning. I think it is written quite cryptically so Alex can say it's about something else, when really it's all a euphemism for the underlying meaning: sex. "If you can summon the strength, tow me I can't hold down the urgency You've got to make your decent slowly And oil up those sticky keys" basically, he's saying if his partner is up for a bit of foreplay, well, do it. He really wants it and doesn't want to wait, and he wants her to start off slowly, getting into the mood etc. And "oil up those sticky keys" is obvious. He wants her to get her fingers wet, with lube or something else, I don't know.... Oh god, this song is so sad! Seriously, this song totally sums up exactly what I am going through at the moment! I'm gonna do this one from a personal view. Well, I didn't let him, he just went, and now I won't see him again. But I want him to mean it. I want him to mean that he won't be coming back, so I can accept it. I want him to do what's right for him, not what's easy, and I'm just not sure if he has made the 'right' or the 'easy' decision, and it kills me. Also, 'Don't waste your time on me' is pretty self explanatory. I did some stupid stuff, got him involved in things he didn't need to get caught up in.....he's better off without me. Also, the bit that is hard to distinguish, the "would you...on me" part, well, I've listened to it really hard a good few times and I'm pretty sure it's "would you restore me", but she pronounces "restore" as "ree-store", to keep it in time and to fit in with the French theme. But they know they can be dangerous as they might break down but they love the rides so much and can't stop going on them. Jay-Z is telling Rihanna to come onto the rollercoaster with him. He gives up on the letter and decides to run in a circle round Kanye and Rihanna, but ends up running in a square shape. Kanye and Rihanna start to bully him by running away, and so Jason Z is telling them to “hold up”. “Life's a game but it's not fair I break the rules so I don't care” Rihanna is describing choosing which rides to go on as there are so many, but not enough time to go on all of them, so Rihanna stamps her feet because it is unfair. Okay, so overall, I think this song is about someone’s battle with depression/suicide, so I’m gonna try and figure it out….. “Step one, you say, "We need to talk" He walks, you say, "Sit down, it's just a talk" He smiles politely back at you You stare politely right on through Some sort of window to your right As he goes left and you stay right Between the lines of fear and blame You begin to wonder why you came” I think this is the conflict between the old, happy you, and the new, depressed you. It’s like you’re a having a conversation with your previous self. The old you is trying to convince you things will be okay (“Sit down, it’s just a talk”), and the old, happy you is smiling, whereas the new you is just blank staring. The old you goes left (a metaphor for “leaving”/”left”?) while the new you stays “right” (what you consider to be “right” in itself). But your beginning to wonder why your even bothering to try and get yourself back on track. “Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life” Your asking yourself where you went wrong and you ended up in the state you are in. The “friend” that you lost is actually the old you, and you would do anything to have that old part of you back, but it’s too hard and you don’t know how to regain stability in your life again. “Let him know that you know best Because after all, you do know best Try to slip past his defense Without granting innocence Lay down a list of what is wrong Things you told him all along Pray to God he hears you And pray to God he hears you” You are trying to convince yourself that you know what’s best for you, even though it probably isn’t, but if it feels right you should stick to it. So trying “to slip past his defense” is trying to convince yourself that you’re okay, even if you’re not. But then you start going through all the things that are fucked up in your life, and it just adds up and you need help, and are calling out to the old you in the hope he/she will hear and come back. “As he begins to raise his voice You lower yours and grant him one last choice Drive until you lose the road Or break with the ones you've followed He will do one of two things: He will admit to everything Or he'll say he's just not the same And you'll begin to wonder why you came” Your brain is full of conflicting thoughts of what to do, whether to carry on or not, and that is your “one last choice”. I reckon that “drive until you lose the road” means to carry on with your life until you die naturally, or to end your life (“break with the ones you’ve followed”). So again, the one of two things is your choice in life, where you can try and get help by admitting to yourself that you’re not okay, or, alternatively, carry on in this depressed slump and just convince yourself that you’ve changed as a person. I don’t think it’s a guy talking to a counsellor, or talking about a friend, I think it’s the conflict between the two sides of a person: the happy, careless side, and the depressed, deeply unhappy side. |

I think this is about someone your very close to (friend/family member/maybe even lover), and you are slowly drifting apart. I can relate to it through friendship, as we slowly drifted apart until we were, metaphorically, half a world away from one another. The bit where it says "And when I leave this planet, you know I'd stay but I just can't stand it" sums me up perfectly. I went through a tough time and became very low at one point, because of my friend. "So what do you say? You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway" almost sounds like they are asking the friend to come back, even though maybe they aren't the same people they once were. I also relate to the "I've been lost, I've been found, but I don't feel down", because, after all that has happened, I'm kind of happier and look back on things as just a part of life. |
