As someone mentioned above, I see this album as a whole as a story surrounding the infamous Limousine song. I'll break it down the best I can. And realize this is just one interpretation, this whole story could be false and just the product of someone who has too much time on their hands. The story, I believe, starts with Welcome to Bangkok, finishes the album, and circles back to the beginning, and finishing with You Won't Know. Welcome to Bangkok "Space Cadet Pull Out" is a reference to Deja Entendu and the astronaut on the cover. They're basically letting you know that this is where Deja ends and this story begins. Not the Sun This is where the story of the drunk driver in Limousine begins. He is in a relationship with a woman and he's asked her to marry him ("Be my babe", also "say you're my friend, why won't you be my family?"). The entire song he's asking her not to reject him ("don't be that note I can't hold," etc.) Luca He's still wondering why she won't accept ("So touch me or don't, just let me know"), while dwelling on his loneliness ("I am uncaught and still swimming alone in the lake"). A lot of this song is confusing to me, for instance, Jesse talking about drowning someone in the lake (which I assumed was a metaphor referring to the "plenty of fish in the sea" saying). Untitled "I could never miss you"... or whatever it actually is. Who knows. Maybe the character is just kind of letting go. Archer's Bows Have Broken He's now questioning what he's done with his life up to this point. He's invested so much into something that didn't work out, whats left of him? ("Who do you carry the torch for, my young man? Do you believe in anything?) He might be questioning God... why would God do this to him? ("sweep me under the rug, beating with the book everyone the book told you to love" and "burning out sins til there's nothing but dust.") He's obviously lost now and realizing that he's never had purpose or religion. Handcuffs He's pretty much depressed and saying he'd do anything for her. ("I'd drive my car off of a bridge, if I knew that you weren't inside.") He also mentions again his lack of religion/morals with "it's hard to be a better man, when you forget you're trying." Sowing Season He's been drinking away his pain ("he's losing [his friends] to drinking and to driving."). He's trying to find direction ("Is it in you now?"). While questioning himself, he references his putting so much in to a failing relationship ("is it in you now, to watch the things you gave your life to, broken." and "Somebody threw that brick, shattered all your plans."). He's realizing that things may be coming to an end ("before you put my body in the cold ground...") and has one more cry for the one who left him ("I'm just a man who knows how to feel, i'm not your friend, i'm not your lover, i'm not your family.") Millstone He's reflecting on how he had his whole life on track. He was doing everything right, and now that this relationship failed, he's turned himself into a worthless mess ("I used to be such a burning example, I used to be original" and "I used to make my parents proud.") More references to his current lack of religion ("I used to pray like God was listening.") A reference to the bible with Millstones ("With my own stone around me neck..."), a millstone was tied around a criminals neck so that they would sink to the bottom of a lake. He may be crying out to God when he says "Be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give." Jesus Christ He's realized that he needs to make a change. He needs questions answered about what his life has added up to and what it means for him when he dies. This whole song is quite self explanatory. He's scared of what is to become of him, so it is basically a conversation with God or Jesus. This song has some of the best lyrics of any song I've ever heard. Degausser He's upset. He's saying goodbye to this crappy life that has become his. "Goodbye to love" is him getting over his heartbreak. "It's a ride that will push you up, right against the wall." He's saying that he loved her, and in in the end it messed him up. One big tell that connects this song to the theory is the line "I really do wish that you'd wear my ring." He still wants her ("take me take me back to your bed, I love you so much that it hurts my head.") but he screwed up ("I'll never say anything right.") Things are coming to a head and he's let the pain change him. "The storm is coming, the storm is coming..." is a warning of what happens in Limousine. Limousine Most everyone knows its a song about Katie Flynn (often mentioned as Kay), the seven year old flower girl that died in a limousine after her mothers wedding by a drunk driver. Whats important to the story is that the second verse is from the view of the drunk driver. "How can I get myself out from underneath this guilt that will crush me." He realizes that this struggle with himself and with God has really come head on with his fuck up. "In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah, He was bored and tired of my laments. He said 'I died for you one time, but never again.'" Truly moving words. You Won't Know He's messed up big time and now he's dealing with it. This song is saying that he's done something so bad that if he was perfect for the rest of his life, little Kay would never know it. "Your daughters weren't careful, I fear that I am a slippery slope." When he says "you can't blame your mother, shes trying not to see you as her worst mistake." he's saying that he feels bad for her mom, who somehow thinks it is partly her fault for not being in the car with her when the accident occurred. He's even contemplating suicide ("I am fine to put your gun to my life, and know i'm scared that it won't fire right.") And lastly, he circles back to his fear of life after death ("On the day that I go up they'll be completely out of their forgiveness supply.") There is so many more connections, lyrically. It would be impossible for me to go through and pick out how each line might relate. So take this for what you will. Right or wrong, it makes this album even more interesting, and in my opinion, amazingly brilliant. |
