The Mamas & the Papas – California Dreamin' Lyrics 9 years ago
At face value, this is a relatively benign pop anthem about being homesick. To me, however, this song has always held a much darker tone. It's not about California at all.

In my humble opinion, this track reflects the thoughts and feelings of a man who has just died and may not realize it yet. When he appears at his own funeral and knows he has passed away, he refuses to move on.

"Stopped into a church I passed along the way" - His funeral. He is stopping by on the way to oblivion/eternity, heaven/hell.

"I got down on my knees and I began to pray" - In denial, he is begging for mercy from god, just one more chance to live.

"The preacher liked the cold; he knows I'm going to stay" - The preacher is symbolic for his role as a ferryman from this life into the next, reading last rites and praying over the body and so on. The preacher thrives on spiritualism and is at peace with death, aka 'the cold'. The preacher knows he will 'stay cold'.

"If I didn't tell her, I could leave today" - The reason he can't move on. He is stuck in limbo because of a mistake he made with 'her'. What did he tell her that he wishes he could take back?

Until he accepts that he is dead he will be stuck in this drained-color version of the L.A. he knew, where everything is beyond reach, the sky is always grey, and all he can do is wander endlessly in the winter of death.
"California dreamin' on such a winter's day" - Dreaming of life while erased by death.

Yes, I am a hit at parties.

Summer Camp – I Want You Lyrics 12 years ago
The best part about this track, aside from the bass and her mad sexy voice, is that it's SO double-edged. The vocals could be anyone: a passionate albeit odd teenager obsessed with their first real boyfriend/girlfriend or an unhinged, homicidal stalker hiding in the crawlspace under your house.

I can't help but think of this as the deranged female companion to 'Every Breath You Take'. So what if there's a three decade age difference? They should totally go out together.

Fixed lyrics:

-
“Don’t you ever wonder what it’s like in there, to be all by yourself like that?”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah, I know. But he’s weird, you know? Like, I’m surprised he isn’t lookin’ at us right now.”

-
You’re so fine, you’re so cool
I need you
And I think that if you thought about it you’d know you need me too
‘Cause I want you
I want you
I want you
I want you

And if I could I’d squeeze your hand so tight every knuckle would crack
I’d wrap my arms around you and snap every bone in your back
‘Cause I want you, I want you...

You’re so smart, you break my heart
I like you
And I think that if you thought about it you’d know you like me too
‘Cause I want you, I want you, I want you, I want you,
I want you, I want you, I want you

If I could I’d kiss your lips so hard your entire face would bruise
Write your name in blood on every wall, it would make the evening news
I’d chain your feet together so that you could never leave
I’d make you love me so much you’d have to ask permission to breathe

You’re so fine (I think about you all the time, it’s driving me out of my mind)
You’re so cool (Can’t give me what I desire, it burns inside of me like a fire)
I need you (I’ll give you everything I’ve got)

‘Cause I want you, I want you, I want you
I want you, I want you, I want you

You’re so smart (There is no you, there is no me, together for eternity)
You break my heart (I can’t stand to be apart from you, I don’t know what I’m gonna do)
I like you (There’s no one but you from the start)

‘Cause I want you, I want you, I want you
I want you, I want you, I want you
I want you, I want you, I want YOU

It’s up to you, it’s up to you (x3)

Dire Straits – Romeo And Juliet Lyrics 13 years ago
Got to agree with lizzie on this one. This is Romeo and Juliet after they grew up and realized that the world is a lot bigger than Verona. For Juliet it was just obsession, but Romeo, not so much, and now while she's out doing her own thing and hardly even remembers what they had, he's slumming the streets, looking back at the balcony and humming to himself, wishing they were kids again, wondering how he could've done things better. Sad how often that happens in real life, isn't it?

The After Midnight Project – Take Me Home Lyrics 14 years ago
There's no chance in hell the song is about him, but when I first heard it, I was reminded so much of Elliott Smith and his life. His whole musical career was overshadowed by intense depression and alcoholism and feelings of never been understood or accepted anywhere. His life ended too young when he got into an argument with his girlfriend and stabbed himself in the chest in front of her to prove a point. Weirdness. What a gorgeous song though, no matter the inspiration.
