The mountains are his emotions. Completely impassable.

Elton John – Rocket Man Lyrics 12 years ago
I can see how people who have been under the grip of drug addiction could draw such conclusions. But really people, there are plenty of worthy uses of metaphor besides crying out about drugs..

The meaning of this song will become super clear to anyone who is 1) male 2) a working man 3) a father 4) a husband..

It's about the enormous burden of the father. It's about wishing he really was the person he portrays himself as at home (nice guy, good guy), but how that can never be, because the real world is not so kind as the home. It's about bearing that burden and realizing that it never ever ends.

Least that's what it means to me.

the 'Mars' verse is just talking about how the business world is a cold, cruel, confusing place. And how half the time, half the people you're forced to work with (including you) don't even know what the hell they're doing.

'Rocket man' is what puts the emphasis on how hard this is to do, day after day. And if his family really knew his sacrifice, they'd think him a hero.

Blind Faith – Can't Find My Way Home Lyrics 12 years ago
I think PoeMax is mostly right. But I do see a deeper context.

I think its a message from old self to young self.

You are your wise old self, speaking back in time to your young self - reckless, head strong, misguided, drugged out, self abusing, whatever it means to you. We're all afflicted with some level of stupidity when we're young. And if.. if only.. we could realize that when we're old, we'll have to deal so heavily with those choices we made when we were young, and continued to make. And that we'll still have the same desire to be happy in the future.. So many kids think life ends at 35.

So, it's kinda a lecture from wise mature self to young reckless self.

But the punchline in the singer's case, is that he did screw up alot, and now is older and still paying/dealing with his choices as a younger person. So he's calling out to his past, a spiritual endeavor, trying to heal.

Which goes along with the spiritual angle of the album, like someone previously said here.

Bob Schneider – 40 Dogs (Like Romeo & Juliet) Lyrics 13 years ago
Oh, and the original poster's question.. what’s behind “were like 40 dogs cigarettes”

I think Bob's talkin about how the best relationships are far from perfect, but always spontaneous, and exciting. Where two people are super-attracted to one another for the right reasons.. you know that feeling you get in your gut, where that person just makes all the woes in your life seem insignificant and weak, and gives you almost a feeling of superiority, like being together is a magical thing like we see in the movies.. You feed off each other, and generate great memories. Life conquered through true love. And, in true bob fashion, he's babbling about a lot of silliness, and planting visions in your head to get this point across. Ok, that's probably over-analytical, but I know my wife of 16 years and I feel younger, sexier, and emboldened when we listen to bob. Like it was for us back in the day, before the kids and boring jobs.. This used to be us.. crazy and footloose, perfect for each other, in a dangerous way.

Sooooo... to me..

Romeo and Juliet - true undying love
40 Dogs - utter chaos and excitement, accompanying the true undying love (or maybe just 40 oz of beer, who knows)
Cigarettes - Addicted to one another, possibly even to a fault.

Bob Schneider – 40 Dogs (Like Romeo & Juliet) Lyrics 13 years ago
well, a couple of things I have differently..

put'um up high reach for the ceiling tell them I don't walk damnit im reelin' it ..
put'um up high reach for the ceiling tumbled down a wall and damnit im reelin' ..

turn the sky black into a sky blue turn a closed shade into a woo hoo
turn the sky black into a sky blue turn a close shave into a woo hoo (like we almost got hurt, but pulled it off at the last second)

make a fire i've gotta burn a few
make a fire, gotta burn it for you

And the extra verse.. I don't have it completely, but here's my best shot.

Clouds hang up in the sky, lives wallow in the light (or lies/liars wallow in the lie, I like that too)
We'll be ok, we'll be alright. Like a blind man in the night.
Like a flower in the sun, like a dog when the day is done.
Like a bear in the forest in a rainy night, got my beehive wet, but feelin no pain.
Take the money and I'll take the jewels. You cracked the pot, but I got the tools.
Don't worry bout the cops, got a getaway plan, just tell her that your with the band.
And I'll be your friendly neighborhood spiderman.

Ain't no junkie? just hang with the monkey

--------------------- wooooooo, bob is so freakin awesome.

That's the best I got it. Sure it's not perfect.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Helplessly Hoping Lyrics 13 years ago
This song and I go way back. College days I used to play this one while my three best friends who can sing harmony beautifully used to make the girls all tingly with this one. This is the way I interpret it.

The couple has been together for sometime, possibly even married and have a love child (whom they love very much).

The song is about doubts, expectations, disappointments that come with long relationships, plus the difference in general feelings between man and woman.

"Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word.."

She is still an innocent child at heart, her harlequin, that faithful friend she could talk to, she misses, and wishes it was there to listen to her.

"Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit he runs
Wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of goodbye."

He is a man, with endless dreams and ambition, and feels he is missing opportunities, and wants to wash his hands of the relationship. But when faced with the ramifications of actually ending it, he realizes it is too important, and he's too invested. This is where a child can keep two people together despite a tumultuous relationship.

"Wordlessly watching he waits by the window and wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams he worries
Did he hear a good-bye?
Or even hello?"

He is looking for that intellectual stimulation that many men want from their wives, but never comes. Many Women just don't find joy in deep conversation with their husbands. Men can, in their efforts to draw this out of the girl, dig too deep into the girl's psyche to try and generate something, force them to open up. All the while he is driving her away from him, slowly destroying the relationship, and he knows it. The goodbye would be a painful relief. But his persistence now has him stuck in a hell where he's tainted the relationship to the point she won't open up to him at all.. Not even a hello.

They are one person (Married)
They are two alone (if Separated, with a double meaning of 'too alone' while together).
They are three together (Man, Woman, and Child)
They are for each other (Helplessly bound to one another by reality)

"Stand by the stairway you'll see something certain to tell you
Confusion has its cost

My stairway is lined with Family pictures. Pictures of earlier times in the relationship. When measured up to how things are now, you wonder.. what happened? Where is that magic?

Love isn't lying it's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello"

A dig on the fickle heart of woman.. And another reference to how her pride or feelings have now closed her off from him.

Peace and Love to everyone.. (Except evil people).

Crowded House – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics 14 years ago
BTW.. I don't think the line "Get to know the feeling of liberation and release" is meant to stand alone.

It is part of the preceding sentence.. It reads..

Only the shadows ahead barely clearing the roof get to know the feeling of liberation and release.

This is just a vision that makes him think of how hopelessly committed to this relationship he is.

I think this song is about perseverance in intimate relationships. I think he is communicating to his girl that he will never quit her, and (practically) begging her to do the same.

The first two verses are about the overwhelming odds against them. The last two are how the doldrums of life are a prison to him while he can only think of her, and their problems. When one gets into this sort of funk, it may seem that the partner is indifferent, for lack of passion, hence the T.V. Page line.

The closing line about the shadows is simply an acknowledgment that he will always have to be vigilant and chained to this love.

I tend to think the title, and chorus holds a double meaning..

Hey now, hey now --- Consoling, there there..
Don't dream it's over --- don't ever think I'll be the one to let go

and -

Hey now, hey now --- Wake up, HELLO!!!
Don't dream it's over --- Don't think it's going to get any easier, love takes work.
