Green Day – Murder City Lyrics 14 years ago
Greendayx13: fyi protesting and criticizing the government is the most American thing ever (not anti-American at all- see 1st Amendment and War of Independence): Green Day is very Pro-American. The are anti-idiot, anti-intolerence (except for idiots, and even for them they have compassion), anti-torture, anti-forcefeeding. They are America's modern day Clash and every American (and Oaklander) should be proud of them.

Green Day – Warning Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my favorite videos ever. Its like doing a hidden picture game in Highlights magazine when I was a kid.... spotting all the things we are told not to do....
1) operate heavy machinery after drinking cough syrup
2) running with scissors (my favorite)
3) crossing police lines (nice Oakland shout out re: who is more dangerous.. police or me?)
4) too many plugs in appliances
5) swimming after eating
6) running at a swimming pool
7) using a blender with the top off
8) drinking expired milk
9) accepting candy from strangers
10) watching tv too close to the set
11) making sexualized comments to co-workers
12) wearing dark clothes at night
13) standing next to the microwave
14) staring at the sun..... and more.... those are the ones that just come to mind.

This song is reminding us that most rules and guidelines we are fed like children, really have very little chance of causing damage (especially if you dont over do it or do it recklessly).... so what the f-. Take some chances, its your life, live it. Its anti-authoritarian and very punk!

Oh Green Day, you are my hero!

Green Day – Murder City Lyrics 14 years ago
As a guy from the Murder City (where Green Day is from) and as a guy who attended the concert where Billy Joe recounted the making of the song...
They wrote the song after the small but well deserving Oakland riots following the murder of a young black man shot by the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) white police officer, who was overreacting to a situation going down on News Years Day around midnight. BART is the underground-aboveground subway system that links Oakland and San Francisco. Oakland is the Murder City not because of this singular tragic event but because we experience approximately 100 murders a year. Oaklanders wear it like a badge of honor but we are also embarrassed by it at the same time. We are a hard city of rebellion and riot and yet we are a very peace loving, beautiful, pot-friendly, diverse city of acceptance. A huge percentage of our murders are gang on gang and civilians are typically left out unless a rare stray bullet finds its way into someone's body.... so its tolerated. We all get stressed and upset when some non-affiliated person gets it in Oakland. One thing to also know is that the Black Panthers originated in Oakland as an anti-establishment pro-black rights militant group that believed in arming themselves as a show of force against a very racict Oakland Police Force in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although the Panthers did a lot of violent and criminal stuff, they also showed that an oppressed people were able to stand up and take on the man with fearless pride. Hell's Angeles also were headquartered and in some respects started in Oakland. I could not think of a better song to describe us Oaklanders. We are desperate but not hopeless. Dont f- with Oakland! We are sensitive, but we'll drop y'all.

The Beatles – I Am the Walrus Lyrics 14 years ago
I cannot begin to state how many different "Paul is Dead" clues there are but there are enough to fill the Albert Hall. Among Sgt Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, the White Album and Abbey Road there must be 100. Maybe one day I will return to this site and run through 100 of them when I have more time on my hands. Hasnt anyone written a book on it yet? Maybe I should.

The Jam – Thats Entertainment Lyrics 14 years ago
Ask me the meaning?
Life sucks, its mudane, trivial.
What is being described these are the things we see, the things we experience and the things we do to cope or convince ourselves that we might as well hang around for another day.
This song always makes me smile.
Very punk POV.

If you enjoyed this song: see Elenor Rigby, The Beatles.

Elvis Costello – Dust Lyrics 14 years ago
Maybe its due to my personal experience, but this song (and #2) suggests to me the realities of asbestos.

The dust produced from the handling and use of a variety of asbestos products: to name a very few: chalkboards, brakes, cloth-clothing, walls, floors, irrigation pipes (flood the plain), transite walls (dam the land), etc.

Asbestos dust causes the same results that EC mentions: getting caught in ones throat, causes hearts to skip a beat (esp relating to breathing), death by poisoning, etc.

The "poisoners" are the companies that put the product out in the market, knowing the results that would come much later in life. The companies (yes Johns Manville, especially you but many others) tried to perpetuate the lie to customers, the government and companies the fiber was sold to that asbestos was not harmful, that it was merely overreaction even though the evidence has been around since the early 1900s.

Many times in asbestos cases, most of the witnesses that could have testified have already died of mesothelioma, cancer, asbestosis, lymphoma, etc. Hence, the only witness to testify is the dust itself.

Companies still try to deny the evidence and suggest that its no longer a problem since its banned in many countries. However, it is still in the buildings, houses, cars, equipment that were built prior to the 21st century. Even today asbestos is merely imported to other countries without bans and we get products here in the US with asbestos whether the evidence is apparent or not. Trace the path of the sales and you will find the evidence.

This might not have been EC's intent but thats what this song means to me.
