Maybe because I was learning philosophy in high school at the time, but even as a teenager, I've always interpreted "angst" as referring to the philosophical term "angst", originating from the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard. "Angst" as a Danish word has different meaning and pronunciation than the English version. I didn't do well in philosophy class, but maybe others can explain it better than I can, but "angst" in the context of existential philosophy has more to do with anxiety or dread about the meaning of existence, what to do with one's life. And of course, as a teenager, that's when the possibilities are still infinite, and so making the correct choices at that time is ever more important, because the consequences of those choices can define one for the rest of one's life. |

The second line - "Your mister, he don't treat you the right way" - seems to suggest that this is about a lesbian relationship. A "sister" versus a "mister", choosing between a girl or a boy. I think they chose the word "sister" simply because it rhymes with "mister". The word "sister" also suggests they are related - not blood relation, but related in terms of sex - female and female: they know each other better. A "mister" is more different, more of a stranger, more unknown. |

| I agree with others here: this song is about a beautiful girl who has low self-esteem and sees herself as worthless, and maybe some other mental illnesses. For whatever reason, she doesn't realize she could be with a better man, hence the song title. Her dad might be to blame, therefore Jimmy Pop wonders, "Should I thank your dad for the damaged goods", because he would not be able to sleep with such a beautiful girl otherwise. | |

This song is full of 1984 references, but it's kind of hard to see that when the posted lyrics are incorrect. For example, the lyrics post here currently omit the line "Cozimnot!" which is a key reference to the novel, as an example of Newspeak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspeak). So what we have here are 245 comments worth of over-analyzation of lyrics just because someone failed to post the correct lyrics to a song on SongMeanings yet again. Having the correct lyrics seems important to intepreting lyrics, but not SongMeanings it seems. |

I agree with SpunkySPunk347 and Iowa$even. There is no hidden meaning in the lyrics, there are quite clear. The song is simply is about morality: the definition of what's right and what's wrong. Should people do what's "right" solely because of fear of punishment? What if there is no punishment? If killing other people had no negative consequences to oneself, would that make murder any less wrong? These questions are the basis of the song. Basically, the song is saying we should do what is right for the sake of doing the right thing, and not simply because we fear punishment. Sometimes doing the right thing means getting punished. Punishment, or the lack thereof, should not be what determines our actions as punishment alone does not indicate what is right and what is wrong. |

These lyrics are incorrect. The second marriage proposal is not supposed to be in quotations. It is supposed to be: How can you stay with a fat girl who'll say: "Would you like to marry me And if you like you can buy the ring" She doesn't care about anything Would you like to marry me And if you like you can buy the ring I don't dream about anyone Except myself The lyrics in their current form with the incorrect quotation marks changes the meaning of the song completely. The second marriage proposal is actually the marriage proposal of Morrissey (or whoever's POV it is) to William, not the fat girl's repetition of the first proposal. It is really astonishing that a site dedicated to interpreting song lyrics could present them incorrectly so often. |

This song is about the novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The title "Colony" refers a portion of the Congo in Africa that was a Belgian colony at the time and it is the setting of Heart of Darkness. The setting itself is a "Heart of Darkness" that described by the book. Therefore by referencing the setting of the book, the song title "Colony" references not only the novel itself, but also the central themes of the novel, the "darkness": Africa, evil, greed and corruption, barbarianism and savagery, imperialism and colonialism, etc. The "darkness" not only manifest itself internally but also externally in the skin colour of the natives. The first two verses describes the the character Marlow departing Britain for Africa. The third verse describes the breakdown of humanity and civilized society among the European colonists in Africa, i.e. a "darkness" that is the central theme of the book (see above). It also describes the internal conflict within the main character Marlow as slowly loses his human identity and loses his heart to "darkness" as makes his way toward Kurtz, who himself located in "the heart of darkness". The final verse directly references the character Colonel Kurtz himself, who established himself as a GOD among the natives, hence the lines "Dear GOD took you by the hand / GOD in his wisdom made you UNDERSTAND." These lines are not directed us, they were directed at the primitive and savage natives in Joseph Conrads' novel, who needed Kurtz to make them "understand" and lead them. |

Yes, most Joy Division songs are not about suicide, but I always thought this song was about a transition from life into death, hence the name "Passover." The last stanza seems to make a reference to reincarnation: "Turning around to the next set of lives..." Surely he is talking about a transition and the end of a life, whatever "life" means. Maybe, instead of death, he is simply referring to the end of his marriage and the transitions involved in that: from married status to single status? Or from one marriage to another marriage? He could be seen living a "double life" due his affair? Certain lines could make reference to marriage and his affair, such as when he says, "Is this the role that you wanted to live, I was foolish to ask for so much." |

| I think this is an anti-immigration song. The singer is complaining about coloured people in England that make real Britons feel "like a tourist" in their own "home" country. The "culture" that the lyrics refer are foreign cultures that immigrants bring into England. England makes "two steps forward," but "six steps back" because immigrants bring outdated traditional values and belief and causing England to be more like the undeveloped countries that the immigrants came from. Note that the National Front was very popular and prominent in England when this song was written and released, so it can't be coincidence. | |

"Childhood pictures redeem, clean and so serene" - old people need something to remind them of their youth, because it is hard to remember "See myself without ruining lines" - obvious reference to wrinkles, perhaps most obvious sign of aging "My heart shrinks to barely a pulse" - heart disease, heart failure "If you really care wash the feet of a beggar" - reference to retirement homes, how old people begin to lose the ability to take care of themselves "I have crawled so far sideways" - losing the ability to walk; stiff joints, arthritis "I recognise dim traces of creation" - failing eyesight; blindness "I wanna die, die in the summertime" - a desire to retire in a warmer climate, which is common among old people. Florida, for example, has a lot of old people, and facilities for them, because it is warm all year round. |
