Garbage – Driving Lesson Lyrics 12 years ago
comments disregarded, this song is f**king brilliant. it's similar to lady gaga's edge of glory, but darker and far more frightening. "car get in the car."

Garbage – Never Be Free Lyrics 12 years ago
this song is about what the title says it's about... never being free. the listener is ensnared in a circular hell of wanting to love the band/garbage/shirley's singing, but being told he/she will never be free/will never forgive me (shirley), and that he/she might as well kill me (shirley). it's quite tenuous.

Lady GaGa – Hair Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't have lyric booklets, but I'm almost positive it's rock n roll red highlights (sung during a rock n roll esque part, aka breakdown), and i think the song isn't meant to be completely serious, as Gaga wears wigs everywhere she goes and often rips them off on stage, as she did during her performance of the edge of glory not long ago in germany.

Lady GaGa – Alejandro Lyrics 13 years ago
lmao are you guys fu**ing serious right now? never seen two people so hilariously deluded with fantasies of knowing a pop star. bravo! alejandro is an awesome song, who cares what the "true" meaning is? music/lyrics are an art like anything else, they are both up for interpretation. unless lady gaga herself comes out and says "ALEJANDRO IS ABOUT THIS AND ONLY THIS: etc blah etc," the song is up for interpretation by anyone. quit arguing.

Madonna – Voices Lyrics 14 years ago
"So you're playing round
It's like it's a rewind
You blew it so often
That you start to believe it"

It's actually:

"So you claim madness
like it's convenient
you do it so often
that you start to believe it"

lol she tricks him into sitting on a wall, and, being a giant egg, he falls and breaks open, giving her all the yolk she needs for her custard, which she loves to have in the summer time. horrifying and hilarious simultaneously.

Garbage – Bleed Like Me Lyrics 14 years ago
aahh, so many avenues of self destruction, so little time... really though, i like the line "dancin with her devil's past has never been too fun; it's better off than tryin to take a bullet from a gun." even THERAPY can be used in a self destructive sense, for gods sake. i also like how the lyrics point out that although all these maladaptive coping mechanisms are innately destructive, they DO offer some form of relief; otherwise, no one would use these coping mechanisms in the first place. avalanche is sullen and too thin, but she gets divine pleasure from being able to see her bones, being able to prove how ascetic and disciplined she is. chrissy is confused and unsure of who to be in life, but he gets pleasure from dressing up and painting himself like an xmas toy. doodle slices herself with scissors and must hide her scars, but shes able to get relief from it, at least temporarily. speedie has to ward off thoughts of suicide and a drug habit, but she gets to find some comfort in sharing her reality with other ppl. JT is a drunk and hates himself for drinking, but after enough drinks he feels like a rockstar.
idk, just wanted to point out that a main point of this song is to explain why ppl do these things to themselves. but then again, i guess no one can make someone comprehend what theyll never comprehend.

The Magnetic Fields – 100,000 Fireflies Lyrics 14 years ago
Was no one else taken aback after hearing Susan coo the lines "i have a mandolin, i play it all night long, it makes me want to kill myself."? i absolutely love this song, and listen to it constantly (i discovered it recently) but every time i listen to it i cant help but feel a bit queer hearing her ponder suicide in the first three lines over playing a mandolin. i cant seem to derive any sensible meaning from these lines... the rest of the song is an obvious allusion to a broken relationship, but the first three lines always escape me. any thoughts?

The Magnetic Fields – California Girls Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is a satire in its entirety with a completely sarcastic, mocking tone; the Narrator does NOT literally want to chop the "california girls" to pieces. come on people. Plus, when sung by a woman, it becomes much easier to see the very obvious feminist tone of the song: the california girls are complete and total frauds, and by using hyperbole (the image of the cali girl being chopped up on a sidewalk) and irony (the cali girls "ain't broke so they put on airs, faux folks sans derrieres"), the narrator provides his reason and means to eliminate the illusion presented about these girls in the media. Again, no one is literally going to take a battle axe to the cali girls; this image represents his feeling that this cultural idea of "beauty" needs to be killed. in addition, the cali girls have plenty of money, but want to appear as though they are just like everyone else, just "gifted" with natural talent and beauty. "faux folks sans derrieres." they are skinny supermodel frauds that the media portrays as being just like everyone else ("square"), when in reality they "breath coke for air" and bang every rapper that walks on by. its quite hilarious actually.

Tori Amos – Beulah Land Lyrics 14 years ago
"give me religion, and a lobotomy." lmfao i love these two lines more than ANY other lyric from tori or any artist for that matter. it completely sums up the epitome of how brain washing and empty so much religious fanaticism really is, in just two short and sweet lines. aaahh tori, you're a hoot.

Tori Amos – Drive All Night Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, the woman singing this song is a prostitute who is sick and tired of her life and wants to move on. "I got a spandex dress, and it managed to fit; hey man come and wreck it now." she managed to fit into her tiny little spandex dress, but it was only on for looks, she invited a client to come "an wreck it now" i.e., she doesn't need her dress, and he doesn't care whether she managed to fit into it or not. "got a kid that calls the cops before the party's started, that generation needs a lesson in sin." someone calls the cops on her for soliciting sex, and she bitterly remarks "that generation needs a lesson in sin." (the kid who called the cops is making a big deal out of what seems trivial to her, she is used to prostituting). "now you're in my door, you say you're runnin' on empty girl, i sure could use a friend." someone comes to her door asking her to be his "friend" for the night; he's "runnin' on empty," he needs some companionship. "but it's a long road that goes on and on and then drives and divides my flesh from your thorn, and it is clear dear man, I'm not sleeping anymore. congratulations as you lose control. do you still need a sign to let me drive? cuz i can drive all night. said i can drive all night." she is ready to embark on this long road that will "divide (her) flesh from (his) thorn," it will separate her from this sordid life she is sick of. and she's asking, do you STILL need a sign to let me drive? cuz i can drive all night." she is done with the life, she isn't "sleeping" anymore. she's ready to drive all night down this long road out of this life she was stuck in.
well, that's my interpretation anyway. sorry for the long post, tori amos songs tend to get me into a very analytical mood, her lyrics are always so full of meaning, but so ambiguous at the same time.

That's the point of the song. They are literally satirizing themselves with this song, it's pretty ingenious if you think about it.

Tori Amos – Curtain Call Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this song is directed at anyone who uses maladaptive coping mechanisms, like drug abuse etc... "ebony beauty" to me means speed (ebony, meaning black, and beauty: black beauties are a street name for the little black pills containing amphetamine), and "pass this shade" is basically asking the drug to "pass" the shade away, take the darkness out of your life. "the looking glass reflects," you see what you're doing to yourself, but no worries, the drug will take the pain away. "by the time you're 25, they will say you've gone and blown it. by the time you're 35, i must confide, you will have blown them all" you've wasted your life away by the time you're twenty five, and by the time you're thirty five you've used the sexuality you have left to entice people into getting your way. "right on cue, just act surprised when they invite you to take your curtain call." you aren't really surprised by the fact that it's time to "take your curtain call" (die, meet the end of the life you know etc), but act that way anyways; don't take responsibility. "then a voice calls me back: this is just circumstance; it is not personal" "oh no, it never is." (sorry for jumping between lyrics). it's a sarcastic remark the person is making to himself. "all the slights people have made against me, all the turmoil that i've endured, it's just circumstance, it isn't personal." i think we tell ourselves constantly that things aren't personal, it's no big deal. oh no, it never is.
you've climbed china's wall, you had so much potential, but in the end after you've "blown it," china's wall is "closed." it's over, take your curtain call.
"i've done what i've done, and it has the ultimate consequence." you know what you've done to your life; but it's the end of your "play"; time to take your curtain call. it's too late.
at the end of the song, the same old pattern that lead to the "ultimate consequence" (end of life as you know it, perhaps not literal physical life) resurfaces. "ebony beauty, pass this shade... the looking glass reflects." you're back where you started; despite the fact that you've ruined all potential you had at the start, you've gone back to needing the "ebony beauty" to cope... to pass the darkness away... to escape your own reflection in the looking glass.
this song reaches me on a lot of levels, and leaves me feeling a little hopeless, for the singer, for the subject, for myself...
