The National – Sin-Eaters Lyrics 11 months ago
@[senorhughes:26195] I think it's saying the opposite, really. The song is eloquently but angrily pointing out that it was the bankers and power elite that knowingly brought about the housing crisis and then pretended they were completely ignorant of it.

And they got away with it. No one was ever prosecuted despite the thousands upon thousands that lost their homes and even more who lost their jobs.

The last part has quiete, almost unintelligible lyrics, but from what I can put together he is saying, "set your houses to the flames/we can live inside the banks."

The Walkmen – French Vacation Lyrics 6 years ago
Hmm, this is how I've always interpreted these lyrics:

I've left my friend
Our train came in on time
But he never showed up
Well he speaks french he is fine alone

Where did you go?
Where did you go?
I should have known
I should have known
Hey, I'm glad you've finally caught up
Just to get around
It's been a drag on my own

Hey where'd you go?
I remember when our plans were to meet at home
You made it home
Where'd you go?
Where'd you go?

As you can see, I think this song is quite literally about some guys on a vacation in France who accidentally leave their friend behind, only to have him catch up later on. The implied fraternalism in the song makes sense, considering most of band's members met while attending an elite DC prep school. Such establishments encourage very insular, familial like bonds between classmates. It's one of the ways they consolidate power and maintain that aforementioned eliteness.

But anyway, I think the fact that the song is about something so benign makes it really unique. It may be just the recounting of completely inconsequential event, but it's performed with a ton of wistfulness. That delivery would make sense if the song was reflecting on it in the preterite, but being instead that it wavers between both present and past tenses, it makes it all the more charming. Pretty smart song.

The National – Guest Room Lyrics 9 years ago
i thought it was more of a willful blindness thing. "tie your woman to your wrist" as if to say, hold on to her, keep faithful etc...but the next line is "give her room to tie the other"suggesting that she will inevitably have an extramarital affair or remain close someone she's secretly in love with. pretty despressing when you love someone and you know they're going to be unfaithful. fits with the mood of sad resignation throughout the song.

Animal Collective – For Reverend Green Lyrics 11 years ago
the line is "a thousand wasted brooklyners all depressed". animal collective is from brooklyn but recently relocated to their original home of baltimore. thus, there are a number anti-NYC lines on this record.

Saves the Day – Nebraska Bricks Lyrics 11 years ago
you know, i really used to like this song when i was a teenager, and i could make the argument that it is my favorite saves the day song. but the other day i re-listened to the the can't slow down album after so many years and i noticed that this song still sticks out head and shoulders above the rest...but in the most suspect way.

the lyrics to this song are far too well written and completely out of step stylistically with the rest of the album. they're subtle, clever, poetic and void of any of the awkward teenage histrionics that plague the other songs on the record. i'd really like to believe that chris wrote them himself, but i feel it's more likely that he borrowed heavily from another source.

"such a pretty song" you say? well, it should be, since they ripped off a beach boys riff. listen to the gorgeous vocal harmony at the end of "surf's up". it's the main melody of this song. l.a.m.e.

Spiritualized – Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space Lyrics 13 years ago

Pinback – AFK Lyrics 13 years ago
this song is alright but the ending line "i miss you, not in a slint way" is what really made me say "oh wow"

if you've ever listened to slint's record "spiderland", specifically the final track "good morning captain" you'd understand why.

Knapsack – Katherine the Grateful Lyrics 13 years ago
i always thought the line was "and no one can love you like father and i do". i always thought it was sung from the perspective of "katherine's" loving older brother as she goes through a tough time with school/life etc. i think it makes more sense that way.

The National – Mr. November Lyrics 13 years ago
actually, this song has nothing to do with the president. it's about being under pressure while recording this album. reggie jackson was known as "mr. october" because he always saved his best for last, aka at the end of the season, so "mr. november" is his way of saying he's saving his best effort for last. i think i read that this song was actually the last one written for this record. the line "the english are waiting and i don't know what to do" is in reference to their label, beggar's banquet, which is a uk based label.

The National – Abel Lyrics 14 years ago
There's a line missing where he says "You turn me ______ god fearing. Now tell me what am I supposed to do with that? I'm missing something I'm missing something. My mind's gone loose inside its shell." Maybe it was left out of the liner notes or something.

I think you guys are reading way too much into it. Like most Pixies songs, they're lyrically just jibberish. I read an interview once where Frank Black said he added the parts about Un Chien Andalou because he liked it and wanted to sound pretentious and weird. Not much else to it.

Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics 15 years ago
I get the distinct impression that the majority of the complaining about Modest Mouse becoming popular is coming from 16 and 17 year olds who think stuff like Bright Eyes is profound.

I've been listening to the band since 97 or 98 and I'm not bothered at all that they're receiving some success. Keep in mind Modest Mouse has been on a major label for like 5 years now. This isn't new.

The Microphones – I Want To Be Cold Lyrics 15 years ago
Great song. I like how it opens with chaos and roars on for 3/4 of the song before it collapses on its own weight and the only thing left standing is Phil's voice, a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar, some piano twinkling and the line "I hope your flames dont grow, I want to be buried in snow". Very nicely done.

Avril Lavigne – Sk8er Boi Lyrics 16 years ago
A few humorous observations:

"Five years from now, she sits at home
Feeding the baby
she's all alone "

Does that mean they got it on, and she dumped him afterward, leaving the a bastard child in its wake? I sure hope so.

"She turns on tv
Guess who she sees
Skater boy rockin' up MTV."

I love how our favorite punk rock princess inserts MTV into her songs. That's as much of an indication of punk rockedness as loose neckties, right?

"now he's a super star
slamin' on his guitar"

If that line isn't an OBVIOUS indicator that this song was written by an out of touch 30-to-40-something year old professional song writer, then I don't know what is. Who the fuck says "I was totally slammin' on my guitar!"? Yeah. SLAMMIN!
