Green Day – Last of the American Girls Lyrics 15 years ago
According to Rolling Stone May 2009, "[Mike] Dirnt is certain that [Armstrong] wrote [this song] about Adrienne [Armstrong's wife] who has strong beliefs and stands up for those beliefs" (50). His wife probably supports animal rights ("Endangered species headed into extinction") and takes care of the malnourished ("She's on a hunger strike / For the ones who won't make it to dinner"). Those who take part in Critical Mass, "a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road," are passionate about their beliefs, and Armstrong uses this event to characterize Adrienne the same way ("She is riding her bike / Like a fugitive of critical mass").

Green Day – Christian's Inferno Lyrics 15 years ago
Christian's inferno appears to be the modern world ("the modern hell"). The speaker of the verse is Christian expressing a bitter tone after receiving a "rejection letter in the mail." In the May 2009 Rolling Stone interview, Billie Joe said that he wanted to make sure that "Christian's Inferno" wasn't going on in his own house. Maybe he's hoping that his own son isn't being pushed over the edge like Christian, the messiah ("I am the chosen one") who seems to have received the straw that will obliterate the camel's back ("I am the atom bomb ... / Toxin your reservoir / And then return man to ape."

Down – Hail The Leaf Lyrics 15 years ago
The speaker turns to marijuana ("So I just smoke / Let me feel stoned") to counter his lack of confidence ("That brave river / I can't sail / That lone feeling / That I might fail"). He either views this drug as the solution to his sadness and fear or he is being sarcastic when he says, "No more sadness / No more pain."

Down – Rehab Lyrics 15 years ago
The speaker compares his alcoholism ("eyes burning drunk") to death ("under the silk / in a box of pine") and wonders if rehab is necessary ("Am I wasting time? ... / Is it worth the risk to be revived"). But even as he questions the point of rehab, he admits that his lifestyle is draining him of life ("I'm hollow").

Down – Temptation's Wings Lyrics 15 years ago
The speaker seems to have rejected ("I gave my life to reason") the pressure of religious faith's judgments ("I feel the pressure, it lightens / to judge this spirit of mine"), but temptation still lingers. Although it is beautiful (hence the wings), the temptation is still a struggle that he "can't shake," even describing his failure as "feeding my cancer." I'm not too sure of the identify of the temptation -- maybe temptation in general. I can't say heroin since it seems that he's only taken heroin twice (1). He took the second and nearly fatal dose after my first and only Pantera show in Dallas back in 1996.
