The Rolling Stones – Jig-Saw Puzzle Lyrics 4 months ago
This song written 50 years ago...can still fit in with todays society.
Its about the hypocrisy of people and everyday life....and someone trying to figure out the puzzle to it all, while avoiding all the outside conflict..I could go into depth with each verse...but will leave that to your imagination...just laying out the foundation here. :) With the last verse, this person finally finds someone that agrees with them...and so here are the two of them staying sheltered and away from all the outside BS figuring out how to solve it.

Picture it today with all the Pro Trump anti Trump people....Pro Immigration anti immigration, pro border anti border, etc. etc.Fuck I am staying to myself just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle.......and I found my woman to help me with it. :)

@[jason10983:26010] Nice to see someone else out there that thinks the same as myself on this song. Is one of my favorites off of Beggers Banquet :)

The Rolling Stones – Jig-Saw Puzzle Lyrics 4 months ago
@[peteaphid:26009] Is basically how I have also viewed the song. They just throw in all these other crazy visual images into the song.....hard to interpret....just as real life is.

Mentholated, not Methylated

Some cigarettes used to be treated with MENTHOL [CH3C6H9(C3H7)OH], also known as "peppermint camphor," a white, crystalline, organic compound obtained from peppermint oil which acts as a mild anesthetic.

Mentholated Sandwich...picture a brown filtered cigarette butt squished between someones teeth....resembles a sandwich..the brown outside...the white filter inside. Thats how I always pictured it. ;)

The live version from MSG puts the studio version to shame....IMO anyways...

@ sgtfloyd101
I am in the state right now as you were when to posted your comment.
FUCKING LOVE. So much confusion when in that in between period of....maybe it can still work, but then again there's no way in hell this is going to work.
Neil portrays that perfectly in this song.
Just had this song roll repeatedly through my head this past weekend while out camping at the Delaware Water Gap (PA/NJ) Siting at river edge, alone....water flowing, birds singing, soft breeze........doubts of relationship...where its headed.....thoughts of just sitting there forever.............
damn, wish I could of had Neil's talent!

Alice in Chains – Right Turn Lyrics 1 year ago
Inside always trying to get back inside
But it's so hard to penetrate pig-thick skin

I'm 'bout as low as I can get
I'd leave but I can't forget
Still I wonder why it ain't right, mmm it ain't right, oooh
Ain't right, mmm it ain't right, yeah

'Bout as low as she can get
She'll leave me but she won't forget
And she wonders why she ain't right, she ain't right
Ain't right, she ain't right

Now we're as low as we can get
Can't leave and can't forget
We ain't right, we ain't right
Not right, we ain't right

Cornell wails on the end verse

Tool – Undertow Lyrics 1 year ago
@[fifteenfathomsdown:18389] great analogy you made here :)
Only that I think the "shut up your saturating me" part refers to that craving, inner thought/voice, whatever you want to call it, knowing you shouldn't do it again but do so anyways. It gets to a point that's the one and only thought you have (you're saturating me)
Rock on! \m/ \m/

Tool – Undertow Lyrics 1 year ago
@[reilly1202:18157] Well...good thought, but Undertow was released in 1993, Jeff Buckley died in 1997

Tool – 4 Degrees Lyrics 1 year ago
The sitar Adam Jones uses at the beginning adds a very "tantric" mood to start off the song.............just sayin' :)

The Fall – Paint Work Lyrics 2 years ago
I always took the lines
A [Swiss good ass/as/at] this lousy business
Was the last thing I was ever imagining

as being...

A Swiss man asked if this lousy business
Was the last thing I was ever imagining

Tool – Hooker with a Penis Lyrics 4 years ago
Can find out a little bit more here......

Tool – Hooker with a Penis Lyrics 4 years ago
It refers to a fan who accused the band of going soft, or selling out after releasing 1992's Opiate. Maynard responds to the fan by pointing out the hypocrisy of such a statement, noting anyone who listens to bands and buys music is a sellout themselves and that everything you "read and wear and hear and see on TV is a product". "OGT" is taken to stand for "Original Gangster Tool"

Tool – Hooker with a Penis Lyrics 4 years ago
Keenan whispers in the left channel throughout the song. At 1:41, "consume, be fruitful, and multiply" may be alluding to Genesis, which contains the phrase "be fruitful and multiply" six times.

Wrong...I consider myself an agnostic....I don't practice nor follow any type of religion.
Everyone thinks THERE religion is the right one and everyone else is wrong, therefore I don't follow any.

Black Sabbath – The Writ Lyrics 4 years ago
Just a little fact about the "hidden track" at the end of this song. For those that don't know...
Some versions of Sabotage contain a short hidden track entitled "Blow on a Jug" at the end of "The Writ", recorded at very low volume.

Being upstaged in a highly unexpected manner reportedly inspired Black Sabbath‘s oddball (and mercifully brief) hidden track ‘Blow on a Jug,’ which can be found at the end of the song ‘The Writ’ on their 1975 album ‘Sabotage.’
According to, lead singer Ozzy Osbourne was perplexed when at a 1970 festival Free, Traffic and Sabbath were all outshined by none other than Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime‘ fame, who yes, featured a jug player. “He was playing f—ing jugs and he stole the day! So it just shows you it doesn’t matter what anybody thinks…after Mungo Jerry we didn’t have a hope. Blowing on f–ing jugs!”

Black Sabbath – Megalomania Lyrics 4 years ago
I've been in a Sabbath kick tonight, listening to all of there old stuff......

Man they just don't write lyrics or music like this anymore now days! I mean lyrics that make you think and ponder.....

This song has always been one of my favorites of Sabbath along with The Writ and Symptom of the Universe, on this album.

Oleander – Why I'm Here Lyrics 5 years ago
I thought of more along the lines of Heart Shaped Box

Everclear – Fire Maple Song Lyrics 5 years ago
The song doesn't need an interpretation as the lyrics are very moving w/o one.

I take it the one who died was a girl from his pre-teen years...his puppy love. They had a very memorable summer together. Over time they drifted apart and kept in touch rarely.

All those memories of that summer come back to him as he reads a letter telling him that this girl had died....dwelling up all sorts of emotions.

Now those thoughts that once brought him happiness, will only hurt now, and no longer bring a smile as they once did.

At the Drive-In – One Armed Scissor Lyrics 5 years ago
Just tossing this out there for the hell of it.
Could this possibly be based off the going on's inside the mind of a "cutter"?

For those unaware, the definition of a cutter is: One who cuts themselves to relieve themselves from an emotional pain.
Cutting is not something one advertises, and when someone does cut they are generally ashamed and hide it as well as they can.
Can be done with any sharp object, such as, but not limited to, knives, razors, broken glass, broken cd's, scissors, and safety pins.

At the Drive-In – One Armed Scissor Lyrics 5 years ago
Nope. I thought the same thing. Then I came here and saw written above, Ambrose158 comments "and I heard that the band
sometimes will play movies on mute and then try to create
music that captures the mood of the movie."

But of course the other interpretations posted here are also intriguing. Thats what makes this, awesome lyric writing!

Black Flag – Damaged II Lyrics 5 years ago
There I just added the correct lyrics...or at east they are beeter than what was there.
Great song when feeling angry!

The Rolling Stones – If You Can't Rock Me Lyrics 6 years ago
whos that black girl in the bright blue hair? :)

Tool – Bottom (feat. Henry Rollins) Lyrics 6 years ago
Being a recovering alcoholic (6+ years sober now) I often found myself coming back to listen to this song for a morale boost. One of the main keys to sobriety is confronting your inner demons..your past mistakes, etc. Accepting them, putting them behind you, and continue on moving forward in life. Pretty much what I believe the lyrics cover pretty well..

Tool – Opiate Lyrics 6 years ago
We both want
To rape you.

With that line alone, Maynard isn't only focusing on religion in this song, just using it as a foundation for the song in general. It's basically making fun of those that become followers throughout life and don't think for themselves for the most part.

*"think for yourself, question authority, strive to be different, strive to be unique, Never repeat things other people say"

Tool – Opiate Lyrics 6 years ago
This quote is reproduced a great deal and is probably the only Marx quote that most people are familiar with. Unfortunately, if someone is familiar with it they are likely only familiar with a small portion that, taken by itself, tends to give a distorted impression of what Marx had to say about religion.

Karl Marx on Religion
Is Religion the Opiate of the Masses?

Religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness. The demand to give up the illusion about its condition is the demand to give up a condition which needs illusions.

Karl Marx, Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right

Hense what the song is based upon.....

Tool – Eulogy Lyrics 6 years ago
Screw the got your interpretation out. And after reading thru 17 pages of them, this is without a doubt the best! Well done. :)

Aerosmith – Critical Mass Lyrics 6 years ago
Story has it that the lyrics are from a dream Jack Douglas had at the Cenacle... Steven was too f**ked up, didn't have any lyrics, so he just used what Jack had written. I don't recall having seen Jack elaborate on it anywhere else... so take that for what it's worth I guess.
The Cenacle is where they recorded Draw the Line...during the worst days of their drugdom. ;)

Aerosmith – Critical Mass Lyrics 6 years ago
Actually I think this is my favorite off of Draw the Line :)

Queen – All Dead, All Dead Lyrics 6 years ago
Yes Queen was never afraid to wander outside the "acceptable" boundries in rock music, and by doing so opened up many new directions into which rock music eventually did expand.

Weezer – Say It Ain't So Lyrics 6 years ago
btw.............This is from a recovering addict/alcoholic of 26 years,(now 6 years sober as of 5/15/12) ;) I lived it myself.....

Weezer – Say It Ain't So Lyrics 6 years ago
Sorry to hear that your father never came back to the family, or more so you. Maybe to him the idea of getting involved with anything in his past gives him a too strong of an urge to pick up. But IMHO that is something that needs to be worked on with ones self if you want to live life fully and normally but w.o alcohol.
He also still may feel embarrassed and ashamed of how he treated you in your younger years.
A tough and touchy situation, but wish you luck! Maybe one day you two will be talking.

Weezer – Say It Ain't So Lyrics 6 years ago
Awesome song about seeing with and struggleing with alcohol its addiction and temptation.
This is from a recovering addict/alcoholic of 26 years,(now 6 years sober as of 5/15/12) that has a long history of alcoholism on both sides of my family.
Only I was too stupid to see myself falling into the abyss when I was younger.
This song at least shows the awareness, of the dangers picking up that drink, knowing his past family history, and from what hes lived.
So for you younger ones that think its kewl to drink every day/night...careful, especially if alcoholism runs in the family, coz before ya know it, you find yourself waking up NEEDING a drink to just get your day started.
I remember saying to myself.....nope not me........
Flip on the tele..wrestle with Jimmy....the idea of doing things...anything to keep his mind off of going to the fridge and grabbing that drink.
The only thing an alkie thinks about is having that next drink. Fuck the problems....grab another drink.

The Offspring – Bad Habit Lyrics 6 years ago
Sorry I missed your comment before I posted mine Aeetos

The Offspring – Bad Habit Lyrics 6 years ago
I'm surprised that know one has said that this song is about the FEELING that you get while driving and you have some a-hole driving in front of you. It doesn't mean you necessarily act out on it though..sheesh

I get this feeling quite often, having to deal with New Jersey drivers!

I have to admit that I do have the bad habit of riding on someones ass 2 inches away after getting cut off though. :P

Nirvana – Polly Lyrics 6 years ago
After hearing this song Bob Dylan was prompted to remark of Cobain, "That kid has heart."

There's a point in the song where Cobain sings only "Polly says..." before pausing and starting over. This was a mistake in the studio that the band as well as the recording team liked, and left on the album. As evidenced in live performances, the mistake was "written in" to the song.

The Offspring – She's Got Issues Lyrics 6 years ago
Oh yea I knew someone like this years ago myself! LOL It was a friggin nightmare at the time though! I learned young that looks are not everything....its the amount of baggage that also needs to be considered! :P
Definitely a happy upbeat song though.

Pink Floyd – Dogs Lyrics 6 years ago
I take it that "spitting in the fan" is similar to the saying "pissing in the wind"

Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics 6 years ago
I love the slide guitar in this song especially after the second "I should have stayed in bed" verse, where its really pronounced.

Its reminds of desperately trying, trying, trying, only to have everything come crashing down on you while still struggling. Desperately hoping for things to come out good...only to fail again.

The music fits so well with the lyrics in this song.
Video is awesome also!

Soundgarden – Pretty Noose Lyrics 6 years ago
According to Cornell, "Pretty Noose" is about "an attractively packaged bad idea...something that seems great at first and then comes back to bite you."

Frank Kozik, the director of the song's music video, interpreted the song as "your average bad-girlfriend experience," an interpretation which Cornell agreed with.

Silverchair – Tomorrow Lyrics 6 years ago
I agree with the interpretation of Fat Boy being used to mean Capitalist Pig. Pretty much shows that in the video.

No Trend – Teen Love Lyrics 6 years ago
You can find a downloadable version of the original release of this song at the following Russian site. The link for it is near the bottom of the list (4th from the bottom at the time of this posting)

No Trend – Teen Love Lyrics 6 years ago
LOL I never expected to see it here either.

Copied from (

Their first release was a 7". "Teen Love," which covered the entirety of side B at 33 RPM, actually became a college hit. One of the most interesting songs ever written, it pairs a pensive, slightly melancholy melody with No Trend's definitive statement of their view of society: A teen couple are reduced to robotic machines, slaves to current trends and societal expectations, their humanity gutted by the emotionless vocal.

Neil Young – Powderfinger Lyrics 6 years ago
This is about one of the BEST interpretations of any Neil Young song that I've ever seen, and it all makes sense. :)

Neil Young – Fuckin' Up Lyrics 6 years ago
It's how you look, and how you feel
You must have a heart of steel

Can picture a disheveled drifter w/o a care in the world for anyone except his own survival, angry at the world, hence needing a heart of steel to not have any compassion for anyone or anything except himself.

I can see you on a hill
Comatose but walking still
Curves beneath your flowing gown
Only I could bring you down

Getting someone hooked/addicted into drug use that led a clean life before, "curves beneath your flowing gown".

Dogs that lick and dogs that bite
Hounds that howl through the night

Possible comparison to relationships with other women/people in the past?

Broken leashes are all over the floor
Keys left hanging in a swinging door.

Never able, or not wanting to, keep a lasting relationship of any kind....."broken leashes", keys left behind never planning to return.

The Fall – I Am Damo Suzuki Lyrics 6 years ago
This was an awesome analysis of this song owennnn. :)

The Fall – I Am Damo Suzuki Lyrics 6 years ago
Yep that was also my first album I bought from The Fall back in 79-80. Loved the Fall ever since then.
Came to know The Fall thanks to a college radio station here in NJ, WSOU.
Excellent song btw.

Public Image Ltd – Religion Lyrics 6 years ago
Well put gregorybrian.
Yes for the year 1978 this song was ahead of its time and was considered shocking.
I was only 14 at the time when I bought the album..parents banned me from playing this old man actually broke TWO of my Pil albums. lol

David Bowie – Fashion Lyrics 6 years ago
I think the video has to be one of the more creative music videos, especially at the time, and I believe to this day still is.

David Bowie – Rebel Rebel Lyrics 6 years ago
The Mick Jagger/David Bowie in bed together, well is atruth, but only to the fact that they were both smoking opium and passed out on Jaggers huge bed, and having Keith Richards wife Anita walk in on them passed out there on the bed. Anita had it out for Mick at the time and started telling everyone he she found both of them in bed "together". Hence the rumor....
Awesome song, always took the song to be about young sexuality confusion and cross dressing. It never does mention in the song if the person sung about IS a boy or a girl. And with Bowie being in his "bi-sexual" stage at the time it could be referenced to either one IMHO.
