Sara Bareilles – Eden Lyrics 10 years ago
I might be wrong, but to me at least it seems obvious that 'Eden' is supposed to be Los Angeles. She moved there to go to college and said that was really her first experience in the wider world, which kind of explains the bridge where she says basically that she used to think this city must be the best place on earth (and that she somehow got lucky and ended up there, and in the entertainment industry). But then she started to see the dirty underbelly - the people who just wanted to be famous for the sake of it, the people behind the scenes who just want to exploit you, who think that looking a certain way is more important than having integrity.

And then during the making of this record she moved to New York, so it makes sense that she can say she's now looking back from the outside in and realized that she had to leave because her life in LA had changed and she'd been "choking on the air" there. Also if she really is talking about LA "all those angels started acting the same" makes sense, because "Los Angeles" literally means "the Angels".

Taylor Swift – Holy Ground Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the coolest thing about Taylor's songs is that a lot of the time you can relate them not only to romantic relationships, but relationships of all kinds--parental, friendship, everything. For me, I can relate this song to a friendship I used to have. I had always seen in the movies and books how people could have these real best friends that they just got completely, inside and out. So I met this girl in middle school, and she became my first real best friend. We were both so cynical and weird. It was the first time I had something to lose.

And then of course years later we had a huge misunderstanding and then we just became really different people and never ever talk anymore. And I was so bitter about it for so long, and felt like all of the sudden I didn't have anyone. But this song helps me feel like maybe just remembering the crazy, good times is enough and that I can move on.

Sara Bareilles – Breathe Again Lyrics 11 years ago
Somehow this song never fails to make me cry. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, when this songs comes on, that's it. My parents have been divorced for quite a few years and I honestly have no memory of it actually happening, but through the years from what my mom's said, or what my dad's said, or what I've heard from my aunts who've all gone through divorce... this is a pretty accurate depiction. It obviously could apply to any long-term relationship, but for me it really strikes home if I think of it in terms of separation from marriage. It's a bittersweet moment--you realize you can't do this anymore but it's all you've known for so long, you realize it's not enough and yet there's still some feeling that you want it so badly.

OneRepublic – All We Are Lyrics 11 years ago
To me, this song sounds like two people going through a divorce--or at least ending a very long relationship. He tries to do what's right and to please her, give her what she needs but he keeps failing. They want to remain friendly though, so they don't want it to be a big dramatic blow-up. They just need a "lover's alibi" to split. They've been affected by each other so much and they know it has to end but instead of a crash and burn heartbreak, they want to view it as simply a "moment of change". Something about this song tugs on my heartstrings so painfully, and I always end up feeling like I'm going to curl up on the floor, sobbing.

Taylor Swift – Change Lyrics 12 years ago
This is such an empowering song. From seeing people struggle to start a business or protesting with the Occupy movement, from fighting for social, environmental and economic justice to combating stereotypes and achieving milestones in education, it's about overcoming obstacles and working so hard for the change you want to see in the world.

She & Him – Change Is Hard Lyrics 12 years ago
I think "I did him wrong" followed with "I was never no, never no, never enough" means she felt like no matter what she did she could never satisfy him completely, and she feels guilty and is wondering if it's her fault. I also think that the storyline is that she sees him now engaged to a new girl ("bell of new love") and this girl might have bragged to her trying to say why she is so much better for him, but the narrator is saying she knows it's her own fault and that the other girl shouldn't harp on about it.

Taylor Swift – Should've Said No Lyrics 12 years ago
Because I must compulsively relate everything to Gilmore Girls, I think this song very accurately describes Lindsay's feelings after she finds out Dean cheated on her with Rory... like when she's screaming and throwing his stuff out of the window.

Taylor Swift – Speak Now Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that to enjoy/glean the meaning of this song you have to listen to it within a particular context. It's a REALLY personal song, and something that would probably never be verbalised in real life. I think most people have had that moment of extreme jealousy when someone that they have a crush on or broke up with but still have feelings for is dating/liking/marrying someone else, and all you can think of is how wrong that other person is for them. It's not necessarily a rational or justified feeling, but it is a natural emotion.

I don't know if there are any Gilmore Girls fans here but I think this song is almost like a play-by-play of the whole Rory-Dean-Lindsay situation from Rory's perspective. At one point I even believe Rory dissed Lindsay by saying how she was so wrong for Dean, and holding him back from his true potential. She also basically stood by a tree and bitterly watched their wedding, and I almost think this song is down to the letter exactly what Rory was thinking at that moment.

When I look at it like that, I see this as a pretty damn good piece of songwriting. It's impressive how she can set up a situation so specific. I think the main issue with this song is that it's written as a story--so the narrator's emotions are not necessarily justified. There's a point-of-view issue. We're used to songs being straightforward and being able to trust the narrator, so at face value this song comes across as petty and bitchy and immature. But if you look a little closer, it's really quite fascinating.

Taylor Swift – Eyes Open Lyrics 12 years ago
It's so interesting how the lyrics can parallel life in the spotlight and not letting your guard down or slipping up. I didn't even realize that until some review pointed it out! I love the double meaning though. Although, I wonder if Taylor really meant it as such when she was writing, considering she's always been so adamant that complaining about fame in any way would be obnoxious. But who knows? Maybe if she thought she could write it into a song that sort of also had another meaning, it would work :)

For whatever twisted reason the first thing that came to my mind when I heard this song was that Seinfeld episode where George burns down Susan's dad's cabin and they find these letters from his gay lover written years before haha :)

Anyway... this song is spectacularly beautiful.

Taylor Swift – Innocent Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow... why is everyone so against this being about Kanye? I think that makes even more meaningful. I think lyrically as well as musically this song is a big step away from being considered "teenybopper" and it's probably my favorite song on Speak Now. It probably has less to do with the Kanye incident itself but more to do with everyone's hostile and never-ending reactions to it. She doesn't like to tell her thoughts about things to the press, but she'll write it into a song. To me, this song is about being the bigger person and shows how mature she has become. I love the imagery and metaphors/similes. Her voice sounds really pretty as well and not strained like it can sometimes.

Favorite lines:

"Wasn't it easier in your firefly catching days?"

"Time turns flame to embers/You'll have new Septembers"

Taylor Swift – Superman Lyrics 12 years ago
This freakishly resembles Harry and Ginny's relationship... Maybe except the "deep brown eyes" (think: substitute "bright green eyes"). But seriously "He's got his mother's eyes, his father's ambition" fits so well! Plus everything else about Ginny basically idolizing him, falling in love with him when she first saw him at King's Cross, he obviously has to go out and "save the world" (literally). For like 4 years he'd ask her how she was and she would turn red and stammer, because she was so afraid to talk in front of him! And the line about other girls was always her huge fear--especially with Cho. Then I think where it talks about her wishing the flowers and card were from him makes sense because so many boys chased after Ginny, and even though she has dated some of them she still wishes she was with Harry. The whole thing makes even more sense in light of him sort of "breaking up" with her in Half-Blood Prince, and she was still in love with him, hoping he would come back down from saving the world and be with her :)

If I didn't know better I would almost think this song was written for them!

Train – Drops of Jupiter Lyrics 12 years ago
This song makes me cry :(

Because it's about his mother, who died of cancer, in the song he's realizing she is now unfettered by the chain of her disease, free to fly through the universe and and do all of the things she could never do on earth--she is truly free to be all that she can be. "Now that she's back from that soul vacation" I think means that as humans, we are just taking a vacation from our true selves which are a part of the universe. He worries that now that she's larger-than-life, she might think of him as cowardly. But then near the end, he wonders if she'll miss the little things on earth--fried chicken, falling in love, soy lattes, and him, her best friend.

I don't think it has anything to do with romance. It's a bittersweet and adorable way of missing someone you loved and looked up to, and knowing they went to a bigger, better place.

OneRepublic – Marchin' On Lyrics 12 years ago
"I'd sink us to swim"

I think this means that he would rather, for the sake of "marching on", force himself down to the bottom if that's what will let him move forward, instead of being stuck in the same place, "floating" if you will. I think it's a really amazing lyric, it's great when artists can say so many things with a couple words and convey emotions through simplicity.

Taylor Swift – Brought Up That Way Lyrics 12 years ago
So I'm not sure if there has been any word as to how old this song is, but as I listen to it I notice it sounds WAY more country than anything she has been recording in the past few years. It reminds me a bit of the older singles Tim McGraw and Teardrops on My Guitar. I would wager this might've been recorded (or at least written) in the days of the 'Taylor Swift' album. Also the lyrics to the song are a lot deeper and more tragic than any of her newer songs, once again reminding me of her old songs which seem to deal with heavier topics (i.e. rejection from peers, eating disorder of a friend) as opposed to how one feels in a relationship and how one feels in a particular situation (good, bad, happy, excited, confused, etc.) In fact I would be extremely surprised if it was discovered that this song is from the post-first album era (or at very most, post-fearless era)

Taylor Swift – Fifteen Lyrics 14 years ago
Well this song definitely does not describe me at fifteen, but I can totally see how it basically is the exact definition of most freshmen... also those "suggestive lines" about Abigail giving all that she had... I realize it's most likely about virginity, but I like what someone said about giving her heart away... perhaps becoming deeply entwined emotionally, even if it was not quite so... extreme. So even if this line is literally referencing Abigail's loss of virginity, I think people could take away from it that anything about giving too much of yourself away at a young age can cause this kind of pain.

Regina Spektor – Two Birds Lyrics 14 years ago
haha the first time i heard this song this is what i heard:
Two birds on a wire
One tries to fly away
And the other watches him close from that wire
He says he wants to as well
But he is a lion

I'll believe it all
There's nothing I won't understand

which was funny because then I thought it was a song about imagination and how a bird can believe it is something bigger and stronger... haha that completely changes the meaning.

Regina Spektor – Genius Next Door Lyrics 14 years ago
Actually, I kind of think that since dreaming is usually an unrealistic thought, "orgasm" might represent a brief moment of pleasure, like he experienced in the lake every night, when he could be himself, but really it was not the antidote because he is only thinking of what is pleasing at the time, and he is not truly living his life, therefore it's not actually the antidote.

Regina Spektor – Genius Next Door Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is definitely more metaphorical than literal... you know how gross that would be if it was literal? I think most of the strong words that make the song are used in a figurative sense... such as orgasm can be "life to the fullest" like someone mentioned, and also the "thick as porridge" is society's problems that they fail to address.

"He took a step, but then felt tired.
He said, "I'll rest a little while."
But when he tried to walk again,
He wasn't a child.
And all the people hurried fast,
Real fast,
And no one ever smiled."

This stanza reminds me of Rip Van Winkle, who fell asleep in the mountains for twenty years and came back to find everything changed and his beard super long...and they were all talking about stuff he didn't understand and he missed the simplicity at first.

Flobots – Handlebars Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it is all about freedom and how we choose to use our freedom. I mean like at the beginning he is saying how we can do all sorts of things like split an atom or market our inventions, etc. but then it goes on to explain that this same opportunistic freedom left unchecked can cause people to die, because we have the freedom to "hand out vaccinations" or "let them all die from exasperation" and then he talks about missiles. I think this song is so cool because it actually has a meaning, kind of like "Paper Planes" and it is fun to listen to but it also is deep and not stupid.

Smoosh – Make It Through Lyrics 15 years ago
I dunno if anybody here is a Gilmore Girls fan but I can't help but view this as the "Christopher & Lorelai Song" because of what Lorelai says in season 7... about "jumping in" without thinking, etc. I totally think of this song when I watch that episode... especially the lines "Cause if you go into something headfirst it might not come out right" and "And I hope it doesn't matter cause we were so alike" and finally "Because when we tried to go I never knew and I thought we could and now when I look backI thought we would" sorry I talk a lot... Smoosh is my favorite band ever!!!
