The National – Lucky You Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm yours, whether you want me or not.

Travis – Closer Lyrics 10 years ago
So to this day, Fran still sings it as:

And when I see you then I know "IT" will be next to me

It still perplexes as to what "it" is, and it's even more perplexing that the next line, it's naturally just "you":

And when I need you then I know you will be there with me

This is obviously the official version of these lyrics now, so why does Fran make the distinction between "it" and "you" here? He could have just very easily wrote "you" in that first line, but instead opted for "it" instead. There's a deliberate intent here.

The Thrills – The Midnight Choir Lyrics 10 years ago
How is that weird. It is an amazing album, beginning to end, with no fillers. There's not very many albums you can say that with.

Lisa Hannigan – Little Bird Lyrics 11 years ago
Yeah, it's all too apparent. I love the line "You are lonely as a church, despite the queuing outside your door", possible referring to the slews of female replacements that Damien has sang alongside with since Lisa's departure. They are all temporary and none could ever quite be what she was to Damien.
Plus, the Leonard Cohen's allusion of "bird on a wire" pretty much sends the message home. Like a bird on a wire, Damien has tried in his ways to be free.

Josh Ritter – Lantern Lyrics 12 years ago
Josh's new Thin, Blue flame. Meaning of this one is in the same vein as TBF. Lyrics point to humanity having faith in itself and the people looking to each other for hope and inspiration. It's the only viable thing to do when faith is so hard to be had within one's one religion and government.

David Gray – We Could Fall In Love Again Tonight Lyrics 12 years ago
There's nothing wrong with the lyrics, but in my mind, it's always made more sense when I hear
"Been a lot of water flowing, Honey we could just let it slide"
and interpret it as
"There'd be a lot of water flowing, if we could just, let thing slide"
Just beautiful imagery nonetheless.

Fionn Regan – 100 Acres of Sycamore Lyrics 12 years ago
I love the way he enunciates "monotony" in the 2nd verse. Can't offer anything of my own, but Fionn did say that he had in mind the idea of an "escapist town" when writing this song. The epic feel and quality of the song certainly evoke a feeling of gloom and impending danger.

Personally, "Of Mice And Men" came to my mind after listening for the first several times.

Josh Ritter – Rumors Lyrics 13 years ago
Honestly, not every single song has to be equated to love with a woman, a relationship with a woman, or in fact anything to do with a woman at all...especially when it's a song by Josh..
To me, this song, like Good Man, is just simply about Josh's love for music and his band members...it's all about having fun and having a hell of a time doing the thing you love. It's like seeing a toddler banging on a set of pots and pans with a spoon, knowing that he's getting a real kick out of it.

Josh Ritter – Change of Time Lyrics 13 years ago
I've got nothing to offer except that I love Josh's use of alliteration in:

Your shoulder blade, your spine
Were shorelines in the moon light
New worlds for the weary
New lands for the living

I think this song is about waking up next to the person you love - looking at their face and beautiful features, you realize just how lucky you are, that before you were "directionless and drifting" among the high seas, you have at last made it to the shores.
Absolutely spellbinding, and Josh reprises the motif of discovery and ships here.

The Divine Comedy – Sweden Lyrics 13 years ago
Neil recently said that Sweden is a metaphor for "heaven"...maybe that's not far off from biting sarcasm, Linus.

The Divine Comedy – Assume The Perpendicular Lyrics 13 years ago
is it Barbour Jacket?

Adore this song, makes you almost want to get up and go do something - which is exactly its intended message! Just to do anything at all. Neil's lyrical genius truly shines here, can anyone shed some light on some of the obscure allusions?

Bell X1 – The Ribs of a Broken Umbrella Lyrics 14 years ago
Thanks for the pointing out the sexual connotations :D, always knew Paul would draw somethings from Damien from their time in Juniper (or is it the other way around?)...definitely very characteristic of Paul's wittiness in songwriting.

Bell X1 – Snakes & Snakes Lyrics 14 years ago
After hearing this from Tour De Flock, this song has become one of my very favorite. Once again the Bellies display true wittiness through their lyrics - "I need to carry out repairs by the light of your star." Hell, that line alone can take anyone's breath away
