Kate Miller-Heidke – Ducks Don't Need Satellites Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i love this song :) i think it is a really simple commentry on how humanities curiosity has created such a complicated existence. its like she saying that we should just stop for a moment and think about how silly it is that we have made life like this... "Don't need some mental far away, Telling them the weather for today So they can say 'How bout it?'". It is a simple yet powerful song with the crescendo to the final chorus sung an octave higher than the others. Its beautiful. |
Tori Amos – Take to the Sky (Russia) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song stands out to me as having many specific references to the cold war. im not sure what it could mean but here's what i think: "this House is like Russia, with eyes cold and grey"- obviously about russia being the communist superpower in the cold war "i dyed my hair red today"- another reference to communisim, red being commonly associated with communism "but my priest says, "You ain't savin' no souls." My father says, "You ain't makin' any money." My doctor says, "You just took it to the limit." And here I stand with this sword in my hand" -possibly talking about people who are trying to tell her what to do and she is there, "with this sword in my hand" armed and prepared yet there is a sense that she has no purpose or direction and is confused as to what is right and wrong due to the things these people have been telling her "and have a seat while I take to the sky"- this is obviously about the sky race during the cold war, russia put a satellite into space which had the potential to begin the nuclear war, this created an overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety with possability of world destruction. "my heart is Like the ocean it gets in the way so close to touching freedom then I hear the guards call my name" -this could be about how in the beginning she talks anout the house being like russia and how she wants to escape it to freedom, referring to the usa with freedom from communism but when she is close to this freedom she is pulled back to fight ("i hear the guards call my name") this could mean that the whole song is about a domestic fight, utalising references to the cold war to describe the two sides of the fight i dont know if this is what other people thought but to me it makes sense :) |
