Elbow – Ribcage Lyrics 15 years ago
It think this song may be the band commenting on their first album. Since Asleep In The Back was such a success, that could be them blowing the doors open for their career, and pissing in the champagne could symbolise taking everyone by surprise.

That's just my opinion, but now I think about it, I can remember Guy Garvey saying in an interview that Cast Of Thousands was meant to open with questions, because it was meant to be the band questioning why Asleep In The Back got such a good reaction. E.g 'We blew the doors, didn't we?' might be them asking as if they weren't aware anything really happened, and they were unfamiliar with what made Asleep In The Back work so well.

Elbow – Switching Off Lyrics 15 years ago
When I went to Elbow's gig in Sheffield earlier this year, Guy said that when they had been writing the songs for the album, him and Pete sat down and brainstormed. He said that they eventually came up with the idea that a song could list the things you may want to see in the flash of memories you see before you die.
The moment remembered in this song is 'a part replayed from a perfect day'. When the clocks give in and the 'traffic' or sound fades, this could represent the world fading away and the person's time coming to a close, and while this is happening, he is remembering the perfect day.

I love this song, it's definately one of Elbow's best.
