Silversun Pickups – Substitution Lyrics

Have you listened to silversun pickups? I'd say a good third of their songs are about failed relationships. And for most people there's nothing mundane about it. And I really don't think the tone of the song matches the subject of suicide, it's just a tad too upbeat. Plus you didn't even mention how the title, or most of the lyrics for that matter, jive with suicide. The vulture offscreen is a universal omen for doom/decay, possibly as in a failing relationship. I think it's a stretch to attribute so much of their imagery to "voices" in your head. Plus, since when does hearing voices coincide with suicide, other than in the rare occurence of severe schizophrenia? |

Silversun Pickups – There's No Secrets This Year Lyrics

I'm pretty sure of this change in the lyrics:
so your hearts blown open
consider with your ear
we are still sincere
should be:
So your heart's blown open
Pulsating in your ear
Feelings insincere
I think in this song he's addressing someone who isn't true to themselves and others, telling them to try and be more honest and trustworthy before they wind up totally miserable. I think the title suggests a theme of starting fresh, making this a good opening song. |

My lyrical input:
Relief was spoken underneath=Release what's brewing underneath
That's when we fell in love another first time=That's when we fell in love, but not the first time
I really can't get my head around this song, which annoys me because I get the sense that it's got the most urgent message of all the songs on the album. That middle verse almost makes me think of a soldier. Anyone got ideas? |

One of the more confusing songs on the album, and I'd really like to know what "substitution" refers to. But from what I can gather it seems to be about a breakup, and the singer feels bad about how things went down. |

I think this is about someone incapable of feeling or expressing emotion, and their inability to connect to someone else. The chorus especially makes it clear that they're just full of apathy for everything, who knows why. |

Man, I really don't understand why this is about the music biz. Please explain other than saying "it definitely is". The very first comment said that Brian said it's about a breakdown, and that fits perfectly. Case closed. Oh, and it's a great song. |

Simple, good song. Aside from the usual metaphors people will tack onto it, it's clearly about a breakup of a not-so-great relationship, followed by the realization that it's not so bad to be doing your own thing. |

Jesus, why has no one pointed out that the lyric absolutely IS NOT "we really need to fuck to relate"? Look it up on any other site. Swearing out of the blue like that in such a crude way does not fit with their style. For praising this band so highly you really suck at understanding them |

Silversun Pickups – Future Foe Scenarios Lyrics

I think you're all digging too deep and looking for specifics. This is one of my favorite all-time songs by any band. It's so brilliant. I think it's about the natural cycles and contradictions and struggles we all go through in life. Love/hate, anger/apathy, war/peace, security/fear, action/inaction, trust/mistrust. And at the end of each one of his rants, Brian wraps it up with the simplest and most beautiful lyric: "It's alrite". No matter what happens, we have to keep our minds open and accept what comes, and the world will keep turning. |

Silversun Pickups – Growing Old Is Getting Old Lyrics

starlight interpreted this exactly as I do, and no offense to conchr, but i really hate it when people insist on superimposing their own wacked out religious views on great songs that are about life itself, not individual beliefs. People do the same with cold war kids, my other current fave. |

Also, the "night time is going to come" line further emphasizes a depressed mindset, as anyone who has experienced depression or knows someone who has will attest to. |

The "end of the world" thing I guess makes the most sense, but I think you guys are taking it too literally. I just don't feel that the overall tone and a few of the lines mesh with that. I think CWK mean for the song to represent not the actual end of the world, but one that is happening in the mind of one man, the one they are addressing the entire time. I think he has encountered a serious crisis, or is just very depressed, and sees his life crumbling around him. The chorus really drives this concept home for me. "Bourbon and a pistol" is obviously meant to invoke the contemplation of suicide, and this place "rubidoux" that is supposed to be so pleasant and beautiful just looks like a whole lot of nothing to him now. The lines about poor people and spiritual men compare the more meaningful lives of others to this man's, which has probably been consumed with the pursuit of money, among other shallow things, eventually leading to this moment of regret and despair. I think that a prophetic end of the world as foretold by religion would be very out of character for this band, as their lyrics tend to deal with very personal human issues. |
