The Killers – Hotel California (Eagles cover) Lyrics 14 years ago
I love the Killers, and I love the Eagles, but listening to this just makes me want to hear the real Eagles version and then listen to a real Killers song. It was almost a good cover, but the brassy instrumentals made it sound way too Latin, and that totally killed it.

Leonard Cohen – If It Be Your Will Lyrics 14 years ago
Leonard Cohen is my favorite lyricist.
Antony Hegarty is my favorite vocalist.
Antony singing Cohen was... sublime.

This song has beautiful lyrics, although I don't completely understand them (but I don't think Cohen, as a poet, really wants his lyrics to be completely understood). To me, the song is about the speaker completely submitting himself (or herself) to someone the speaker admires enough to believe that he or she can heal emotionally wounded people simply by loving them; this someone could be a lover, teacher (master), or deity.

Antony's rendition of this song was, as I said above, absolutely sublime. His voice adds emotion and depth that Cohen's voice can't approach, and it fits the song perfectly. I regret that it is difficult to find a recording of his performance that doesn't have an instrumental chunk cut out of it for an interview with Cohen that breaks up the magical flow of the song.

ok, i seriously have a problem with this song. i can't stop listening to it. over and over and over, with the sound of rain, with sound-blocking headphones, with the rain again, i just can't stop

Antony and the Johnsons – You Are My Sister Lyrics 14 years ago
i hadn't really thought that this was about his own feminine side before, but that does make sense.
i think it's about his literal sister. i think he probably has a close relationship with her because i saw a video on youtube of him discussing his environmental concerns with his concert audience and he mentioned doing a lot of things with his sister. however, i have not been able to find a biography of Antony that discusses any siblings at all...

Antony and the Johnsons – You Are My Sister Lyrics 14 years ago
um, actually, i think he is. he is NOT transgendered, which many people refer to him as, but he does wear very feminine clothing, has a very feminine hairstyle, often wears feminine makeup, carries a purse, etc. he frequently even points himself out as female, even though he technically isn't. i think most of that (maybe not the last part) qualifies him as a cross-dresser

Antony and the Johnsons – The Lake Lyrics 14 years ago
worth noting: (according to my award-winning 9th grade literature teacher) Poe believed that people are most perfect at birth, when they are closest to God, and that each and every experience takes you farther from God and therefore detracts from the perfection, but that death is a return to God and perfection. thus, Poe wanted to get as close to death as possible without actually dying in order to taste that perfection, so he used a lot of drugs and whatnot; this attitude was also reflected in his literature, most (i think possibly all, actually...) of which had to do with death. My teacher began and ended this lecture with a very simple sentence: "Poe is a freak."

needless to say, this is an amazingly beautiful poem, amazingly beautiful musical rendition (as is always the case with Antony)

beautiful, hopeless, soul-filling
this was how the song was meant to be, not jacked with guitar, drums, and hollering

Antony and the Johnsons – Everglade Lyrics 14 years ago
Antony said in an interview that the album "The Crying Light" has a lot to do with his environmental concerns; this song is definitely relevant, as the Everglades in Florida is a large, unique ecosystem that is becoming increasingly altered and, essentially, destroyed by human activity. however, i think he writes all his songs to have ambiguous meanings, and narcotic use is definitely an alternate possibility, as the lyrics certainly evoke some psychedelic images, or it could be an extension of some of the feelings described in the song "epilepsy is dancing" which is earlier on the same album

submissions
Antony and the Johnsons – Epilepsy Is Dancing Lyrics 14 years ago
right... i love this song, but that video... let's just say i didn't like it.
anyway...
i think it's another expression by Antony that his differences, which may be normally considered bad by society, are what really make him especially beautiful; combined, of course, with things about how an epileptic seizure feels (i think; i've never actually had a seizure, but i assume that's what the strange visual descriptions are referring to)

Antony and the Johnsons – Dust And Water Lyrics 14 years ago
so, so, beautiful
this song makes me think of rain in a desert, but that might be because the first time i heard it was with a slideshow of paintingss of desert (it's a video on youtube), and of course the desert accounts for the dust and the word water evoked rain. and there are parts where he's just gibbering (that sounds like an awful word to describe his beautiful singing, but there aren't lyrics and it's not quite scat singing, so i say gibberish) that sound like flowing water

also, the way he pronounces the words makes him sound like a young child, which makes me think of incredibly innocent childlike devotion (there's definitely an explicit element of love/devotion)

Antony and the Johnsons – Bird Gerhl Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is clearly about Antony's sexuality, which is a huge part of his identity. He feels he is finally in control of his destiny (no one can stop him from doing what he wants, personified here as flight, which he is only just ready for: "I've got my heart/Here in my hands now/I've been searching/For my wings some time/I'm gonna be born/Into soon the sky")
also that gays/transgendered people will not be damned just for being gay ("bird girls go to heaven"), which also indicates belief in a higher being (many people think gays must be atheists since the religions of the Book [Christianity, Judaism, and Islam] are interpreted as condemning homosexuality)
it's not specific though; its about simply being free and independent regardless of any differences

I've seen V, but i don't remember hearing this song in it.... well, it was a long time ago, and i want to see it again
but i've read the scene described, and i think it would have worked wonderfully

Antony and the Johnsons – Her Eyes Are Underneath the Ground Lyrics 14 years ago
To be honest, when I first saw the title of this song, I had a mental image of a girl sticking her head into a hole in the ground I don't know how I could have thought Antony would write a like that.
but now, of course, I have heard the beauty of this song. I think everyone has a good point regarding the meaning. I think "her eyes are underneath the ground" is probably referring to death. however, back to my original stupid first impression, i think it could also be about someone who is oblivious of something very obvious, maybe because she doesn't want to admit to it; this may be alluding to people's denial of human-caused environmental problems (and "basking in the sun" may mean people are enjoying the warmer global temperatures without realizing the disastrous causes and effects). it's worth noting that Antony said in an interview that "The Crying Light" album, which this song is from, is a lot about his concerns about the environment and his realization that humans are not so unique (as in the only ones with minds and souls) among animals because we are all made of the same carbon and water, so why shouldn't other animals and even other kinds of organisms think and feel as we do

Antony and the Johnsons – I Fell in Love with a Dead Boy Lyrics 14 years ago
Antony fell in love with a dead boy, and I fell in love with a gay man... well, at least his music ;)

I think the "are you a girl" part is adding a slightly straight, or at least bisexual, spin to this gay song, since "beautiful" is generally applied only to men who have childlike, vulnerable faces that give them a somewhat feminine appearance, so it's like he's saying the boy was so beautiful he looked like a girl.

This song kinda reminds of a guy I knew a couple of years ago who was one of my best friends but also had a huge crush on me. When I first met him, he was totally ostracized by cruel middle school society; he had almost no friends, and he was not a happy person ("I find you with tears in your eyes"); I wanted to be one less bully to him, so I made a serious effort to see through his awful reputation, really get to know him and eventually become one of his only good friends ("...held your hand").
But life soon sent us separate ways, and I realized too late that I had similar feelings for him. I recently found out that he (unsuccessfully) attempted suicide, and I have reason to believe it had more than a little to do with me. Since our (geographical) separation (and after his suicide attempt), we have both hurt each other in various little ways, and I see now how much he has changed since we were friends. Even though he's still alive and I still miss him, he's as good as dead to me now because I know that even if we could be together again, it would be impossible to share again the friendship and trust we had before. Since I realized both my feelings for him and the growing invisible wall between us at around the same time , it's like I fell in love with a dead boy because he is no longer the boy I came to love: that boy no longer exists.
Most of my close current friends know this story even though they never met him ("Now I'll tell all my friends/I fell in love with a dead boy"), and I wish my parents, who have prohibited me from talking to him, could have understood what a great guy he used to be ("Now I'll tell my family/I wish you could have met him"). Sometimes I think about things I should have said to him when I had the chance ("Now I throw bottles out to sea"), and I know I will never forget him ("No one's gonna take you away from me").

Well, tmi... But this is a beautiful song nonetheless.
I <3 Antony

this is the closest a song has ever gotten me to crying. i actually teared up a bit, whereas usually the emotion of the music just fills me up. this time it actually overflowed.

aw, stop dissecting it! you almost ruined the mood. almost, but not quite (it's not quite possible anyway).

very good and interesting insight, but i think it's better to subconsciously absorb everything you observed as the unified beauty of the music than to figure out exactly what makes it beautiful

i don't mean to criticize you; we all have our own ways and ideas :) thanks for sharing yours anyway

at first i thought it was about a reluctant suicide, but i see now that the environmental interpretation makes as much sense.
and at first i thought the sound in the background was supposed to be the wind, but if this is an environmental statement, it does sound beautifully like a whale
antony probably intended it to be interpreted both ways, as a lot of his other songs also seem to have duel meanings, one obvious to some people, a different meaning apparent to others, but both make sense

and i too think it's "bees" not "beach"

everyone always goes gaga over antony's vocals, and i agree that his voice is the best part of the music, the most beautiful voice i've ever heard (major understatement)
but i think more notice should be given to his piano: it beautifully supports his song (and i think it's a major reason that covers of this song never sound that good even if the vocals are great because people usually use guitar for covers)and even by itself, without the vocals, the piano is... it is.... i can't think of the right word (maybe there isn't one), but it makes me feel like i am floating above the clouds on a warm breeze (what a pathetic comparison) that caresses my entire being, heart, soul, everything but with sadness

Antony and the Johnsons – Fistful of Love Lyrics 14 years ago
idk why i didn't mention this before, but my first thought about this song's meaning was actually that it's about a playful relationship; for instance, my dad often expresses his affection by slapping people on the back, and guy friendships are often like that too. sometimes you might get bruised or something, but it's all in fun and love, and all involved know it.

i agree with pretty much all the interpretations here. this song is so open to interpretation, they all could be right.
i find the phrase "it's out of love" very interesting, though (i don't think anyone else has mentioned this yet): what most seem to interpret it as is "it's due to love," but i think it could also mean "it doesn't have any more love" and i think antony made it ambiguous like that on purpose

just my thoughts :)

oh my gawdddddd. i found a video of a live performance of this on youtube (first result of this song on the search "antony") and it is absolutely AMAZING. i think anyone who likes this song really MUST watch that video. i don't want to spoil it too much (ok, spoiling it isn't really possible, but i don't want to give away all the specific surprises in it), but i will say that some parts are kinda funny (like literally "haha" funny, but also a bit queer "funny" at the same time), some parts he seems like he's crying and it makes you want to cry with him, and he doesn't do the normal celeb musician stage performance phony soppy b.s., he just says it like he means it and is done with it.

but seriously, if you like this song, watch this video. as music goes, it's as good as, if not better than, the studio version. as concerts go, it's a breath of fresh, emotional air, especially watching his face.

i think this song is definitely about being transgender, but i think it's also about accepting who you are, but knowing that you can someday be more, someday you can become what you really really want to be.

some of the best piano too

oohhhhhhhhh. really, what more can be said about how this makes me feel? beyond tears (but i am literally shivering, not from physical cold, as i listen to this). who needs drugs when there's music like this? (hence my username). i can't stop listening to this song. "beautiful" is a pathetically inaccurate word

my parents don't like aatj because they think antony sounds "too queer." personally, i'm a practicing and believing monotheist, but i don't understand how someone damned for his sexuality could have been given such a gift in life; homophobia doesn't make sense, especially when listening to this

i think this is as much about yearning for true love and acceptance--in this life-- as much as fear of death; other than that i don't have much to say about the song's meaning that hasn't already been said here, except about the seal's watershed:
someone said it's referring to a leaking seal, but watershed is actually an ecological term referring to wetlands around rivers, etc; here it may mean the middle place referred to earlier, not quite the solid ground of life but not the deep water of eternity either. the seal may be the line between life and death that's supposed to be clear-cut but isn't and instead is somewhere hidden in the watershed. or it might just have a personal meaning to him

aah, rambling comment. oh well. this song is the kind that fills my body, my heart, my soul, and threatens to tear me apart. i had to say something

Does anyone else think the message in the last stanza is reminiscent of the song "All the Pretty Little Horses"?
I absolutely LOVE this entire album, musically and lyrically, but this song is definitely one of the better ones. And I think Gabriel's voice fits the sad fatherly role in this song perfectly, especially in contrast to Cole's dreamy voice of an outsider seeing their incredibly deep pain.

Yeah, you're mostly right based on what I've read in a lot of different places, but I don't think his family really disapproves so much as his father is trying to comfort him in his last moments. Maybe he's been afraid of his family's disapproval so he didn't come out to them until he realized he was dying, and then they are too heartbroken to care about his "choice."

Yeah, I'm 14 and I thought the same until I recently became more interested in Paula Cole and decided to look up some of her songs. LittleBriddie is right, based on what I've seen just about everywhere that the meaning of this song is discussed. I probably could have guessed some of that from the lyrics, but I didn't really pay attention to what the lyrics were at all until my recent interest sprouted.

Paula Cole – Carmen Lyrics 15 years ago
This sounds like it's written from a male perspective, since "Carmen" is a female name and this really seems to be a love song more than about friendship or sororal feelings. Also, "Just take me into your body" could be interpreted as what a guy wants to do with a girl.... I'm probably taking that part the wrong way, though.

I found a video of this song, and Ian Anderson was acting so crazy, he must have been high. Or he just couldn't contain his brilliance =) or both.

I think the flowers might be a reference to, well, flowers in spring, because this guy lives on the streets, in parks, so he's always outside and sees the seasons changing right in front of him

Maybe "salvation a la mode" means the Salvation army doesn't always give what is really needed, to who really needs it. They just focus on what the public thinks they should do, like helping people who were once doing well and are now struggling financially. They don't really reach out to the hobos, or they give them a bunch of useless stuff when all they really want is a nice cup of tea on a cold day.

JETHRO TULL IS AMAZING!! peace, y'all

I love your references to concept albums by other artists!
For those who don't get them:
Puerto Rican immigrant="Capeman" by Paul Simon
comparing mankind to animals: "Animals" by Pink Floyd
man's descent into madness: "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd
I'm not sure about the man who tries to kill himself... is that Pink Floyd too? The concept sounds familiar.
And of course a play could be pretty much any movie/play soundtrack that actually has a theme, like "Capeman" (mentioned above), "Tommy" (by the Who), "The Wall" (Pink Floyd), etc.

Jethro Tull – Slow Marching Band Lyrics 15 years ago
this is one of my favorite songs by far
the lyrics definitely make it seem like it's about a someone dying (maybe of Alzheimer's? cuz he says "never mind the words" which implies that whoever the song was for had trouble remembering lyrics), as "slow marching band" conjures images of a funeral procession (well, all of the lyrics seem to imply something about death), or maybe it's about moving on in some other sad way, like losing all memories and abilities to Alzheimer's. It seems like it's for a former band member (the whole stanza starting with "take a hand"). and ian anderson (or the whole band) is just letting whoever go as they must instead of trying to stop/reverse the inevitable
but his tone of voice sound almost like paternal love, especially for a daughter. maybe because of the way he puts the word "love" after "don't say goodbye" cuz i know saying "love" like that is a British* thing that usually men say to girls or younger women as a term of endearment

*yah i know they're Irish, but the point I'm making is a distinction between American English and the rest of the English-speaking world, which uses British spellings and colloquialisms

it has no lyrics... who cares? one of the most beautiful songs ever
puts me to sleep: the perfect lullaby
makes me feel like i'm flying over the world, floating on the wind over beautiful forests & streams...

i wish stupid orchestra teachers would let us play this in school... we started to once in 6th grade, so i know the melody's pretty simple, but then we couldn't keep working on it cuz we already had too much stuff to play. but then she never brought it back, and none of my teachers since have considered it even when they ask for recommendations and i say Canon! and it's not like it's too easy because we were capable of playing it in 6th grade, the younger the intended player is, the easier and more dumbed-down the famous piece is. it would be a great opportunity to work on vibrato and emotion in playing, which we really need to work on, but my teacher seems rather incompetent... >sigh<

i love Canon. songs like this make me live up to my username ;)

im an idiot for thinking anyone is gonna read this far, but i must add my story about someone who died recently
i didn't know him personally (although i really wish i did); it was in 7th grade, he had leukemia, and everyone who knew him loved him, they weren't just being nice about him after his death
he was a great student (athletic too!) despite missing so much school for treatment, and he was really nice to everyone; one of his best friends was arguably the biggest loser in our grade
surprisingly, i did not hear this song in association with his passing; in fact i don't remember hearing any song played specifically for him, though a few days after he went one of my teachers was playing the radio in class and "you're my best friend" (by queen) came on, and everyone thought of him, especially above-mentioned loser... but i digress
so this song made me think of him (even though i never knew him), and if im still in the same school for the 2nd anniversary of his passing, i'll remind people of this... i think a lot of people will know it, even if they didn't think of it at first

i think he's talking about how his life was like a living heaven before his son died, and it was too good to be true, and then it really wasn't anymore because his son died and shattered his perfect world
now his son is in heaven, but he (eric) isn't ready to join him yet, and he has to go on with his once-perfect, now-painful life until his own time comes and he is reunited with his son

jeez dude chill
celebs don't write songs or play parts for the purpose of explaining little nobodies' feelings, and we little nobodies* know that
they write songs about their own feelings, but emotions are universal, and the purpose of songs like this is to demonstrate that, to express emotion. people express emotion in hopes that others will identify, which is what we are doing: we are identifying with this almost superhuman (in status/reputation) figure's very human feelings. we are very real.

most of us don't write our own songs/poems because we don't have the talent or the will, or we are not willing to share our genius with the world as clapton (and many others) have. or we do not have the fame for our work to become known, and have virtually no chance of achieving said fame. we know that nobody cares about how a song reminds us of dead friends, but we tell anyway because human instinct is to express. in fact, isn't that how most musicians (those with any real talent, anyway, like the one in question) get started, simply making music for their own private expression and enjoyment until someone discovers them and gets them somewhere?

*most of us are not fuckheads; you, however, are a different story, my dear fuckhead mung bean
