I think you are right, barely.conscious, but I would like to add something. I think you can see it prevailing, and the poverty is a metaphor for a bad situation in live in general. There is someone in the lyrical self's live, who tries to help it and sweetens it's life with ice cream and helps her to ignore or to handle the things better with the cigarettes. "And takes away my breath [...] This one's the one This is the only one This is the one" This part discribes the lyrical self's addiction toward the person. When it loses this person, it has lost everything. Even her breath... |

I share mockingsmiles opinion. She is singing "I wanna BE your Joey Ramone" and not "I wanna be LIKE Joey Ramone". I think that is the point where the main difference lays. They are popular, there is no question. And they are famous, too. But what she wants is to be loved by all these teenage-girls, like Joey, or Thurston. I think the lyrical self is not really a sex-icon. So feels the singer, or writer, or whatever. |

I think this song means, that you should not try to achieve an unrealistic aim, but just live and make the best of your life. You should try to achieve things, you go for that ones you CAN achieve, so that you have had a fulfilled life. "wir haben unser Leben noch nicht gelebt so lange man uns nich auf den Friedhof legt!" should mean, that with the live they live(with aims you can not achieve) will first be fulfilled, when they die. |

I think, that atthedrive-in is mostly right. The song is about the recurrent "political" songs of the kiddies' wanna-be punkabands, who have not got a clue what is really going around in the world. They hear, that the president is hated by a group of people they would like to belong to and think they would be cool by recording such songs... It is the adjustment, that opeople have... "We have to write a song to show our situation, and to make somebody do something against it" Well... everybody knowas the situation, but nobody still is doing something. I think thatn is the point, that enerves Thurston to write that song. @ choqq: I am sure it is "impotent jerk"! also form the context.. Have you not ever heard, that Hitler had only one testicle? ... =) @mrfisto: That does not make any sense.. As he wrote the song he did not have the thought, that he would not like the song. And why should it be re-writed when it would go on the record? Just to show, that it is a bad song? It simply makes no sense to me.. |
