I think this song is about an astronaunt leaving to explore the universe hence the - 'chasing a starlight until the end of my life'. But he is having doubts 'I don't know if it's worth it anymore'. It seems to be a one-way mission too. The rest of the song is concerned with the struggle to find the will to carry on the exploration of space when he's missing everyone who cared if he lived or died, his girlfriend and family. The main theme of the song is - is space travel really worth it? Spending billions on exploring space when we have enough to deal with here on earth!! The line 'Our hopes and expectations, blackholes and revelations' is explaining the mission he's on - to explore the universe as we hope and expect to find something useful out there! |

Personally I think it is a clever song in that the verses make it sound like he is talking about a relationship - a dangerous, sexually addictive, powerful relationship which if they carry on he's going to end up seriously fucked up or even dead! 'I think I'm drowning Asphyxiated I wanna break this spell That you've created' 'You will be the death of me' But the chorus shows that this love affair is actually with our own consumerist society because he sings 'Our Time is Running Out'. 'Our Time' meaning modern soceity. If it was about a relationship he would sing 'My Time is Running Out' but he is saying this is us, all of us stuck in this destructive relationship which we can't get out of!! Bury it I won't let you bury it I won't let you smother it I won't let you murder it Our time is running out Our time is running out You can't push it underground You can't stop it screaming out He's saying I won't let you bury the truth about society and I won't let you murder the ideas and freedoms people are having - I am going to scream out the truth to the population and warn them Time is Running out!!! Unless we realise the lies that the government organisations are using to cover the truth about how fragile our society is and how close to collapse it truly is we will all be taken totally by surprise when the financial systems collapse and there is no money, food or shelter from our so called civilised governments.... I wanted freedom Bound and restricted I tried to give you up But I'm addicted Everyone wants freedom - but it is ALWAYS restricted. Our government (UK) wants to introduce IDs cards so everyone is registered, numbered and tagged. The protest marches against the Iraq war were totally ignored - so much for freedom of speech, gets you fucking nowhere!! Even our prime minister is not an elected representative of the people - he got there by default and there is nothing we can do about it! So much for democracy. The 'I tried to give you up' section is again making the reference to a destructive relationship, trying to remove yourself from society, ignore the lies printed in the media and slip out of society - but soceity, TV, the bright lights and big cities are addictive, taking the wages, spending them on shit you don't need, consumerism - society has loads of addictions. The video also goes along with this - they are singing and performing on the table of a government meeting just like in the movie Doctor Strangelove. They are in the 'war room' all the big hot shots deciding our fate but underneath they are all perverted and wrong, trying to tempt us in as they all strip off down to their underwear. They also seem to shoot each other so they all end up dead at the end!! Awesome is not big enough to describe how clever this song is - Love it, my favourite live song!!! :) |

| Seems to be about feeling really negative and dark, almost evil, seeing a young innocent person and wanting to literally consume their innocence because you have none left. It's a pretty dark and brooding song especially as we all know women who get with a bloke and after a while they are changed and miserable because their new bloke is a depressive, jealous, twisted kind of person. It's not a nice theme but these situations happen every day and the song is really good. Just must have been written when Matt was really depressed and saw a happy couple or someone who is just too jolly for their own good and he thought - I'd like to wipe the smile off your face, suck out your happiness because I feel like shit....and ex of mine was like that, I'd ring him up and be all happy and he would be like, what the fuck have you got to be happy about and would only be satisfied when he'd reduced me to tears...this is what I think about when I hear the song. | |

Matt's songs are always pretty complicated and a jumble of ideas. I think this one is about the media - when they were getting started trying to explain his ideas to interviewers who just want easy to quote soundbytes. So the first stanza is him talking to the press - break me in, teach us to cheat and to lie, cover up what shouldn't be shared? all the truth's unwinding scraping away at my mind please stop asking me to describe So in getting famous he is being taught to cover up bits of his rather insane personallity as it is not 'interview friendly'. The next stanza is him shouting at himself for being a wimp and not standing up to this and saying what he really thinks: for one moment i wish you'd hold your stage with no feelings at all open minded i'm sure i used to be so free Then the third stanza is kind of an answer to why he has to cover up so much of himself and suppress what he really wants to say to everyone: self-expressed, exhausting for all to see and to be what you want and what you need the truth's unwinding scraping away at my mind please stop asking me to describe He is full of self expression which he accepts is pretty exhausting for people listen to, as he has a mind that works at about 500mph and reads a lot of science and conspiracy books so has a tendancy to rant on about them in interviews (check them out on youtube - Matt is officially insane but you gotta love him!!) |

I think that it's about date rape as he sings about her being 'comatose' and she can't really remember what happened but when she sees him again later in another club she has a flash of rememberance and the Jigsaw Falls into Place. She looks at him 'not just once' and the feeling comes upon her suddenly 'You've got it on you, can feel it on your back', the shiver you get when you remember something you did when you were paraletic drunk. The song seems quite obvious to me and is a warning to not get drunk with strangers in a bar and pass out so he can take advantage of you!! The whole song fits this: The walls abandon shape - because your pissed They've got a Cheshire Cat grin - because they're high All blurring into one - because your pissed and high This place is on a mission - to get everyone out of their heads Before the night owl Before the animal noises Closed circuit cameras Before you're comatose - the club is the prelude to the planned swoop by this night owl man to take advantage of her when she's comatose outside Before you run away from me - she works out he's a loser Before you're lost between the notes - but too pissed, drugged up and confused so she's lost and doesn't know where she is or what's happening The beat goes round and round The beat goes round and round You never really got me there I just pretended that I had - she 'dragged' him to the club and so he makes out 'this was your idea' when he's just bullshitting because it's what he planned from the start Words are blunt instruments - she's so pissed you can't talk properly, so she says 'fuck off and leave me alone' but it is just a 'blunt instrument' and doesn't come out properly and can't stop the inevitable Words are a sawed-off shotgun Cool song though and interesting it's from the point of view of the loser bloke and kind of showing the woman up for being a drunken idiot. There was a famous court case in England around the time this came out about a rape in which the man claimed the woman had consented but in fact it was proved she was so drunk she wasn't in an state to give constent. This is probably one of the inspirations behind the song. |

To me the song is about how modern society is making people souless. If you imagine that a soul is the devine part of us, it's where our love and personally live. The 'Micro Cuts' are the tiny slices things like television and the media make to the link between ourselves and our souls. The 'red hands' are from the doctor making the slices in your brain that disconnects you from your soul - kind of like the experiments in Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' books. Everyone's souls are 'weeping from above' as they have been cut away from us. The 'whimpering love' is because now he has no soul he can't love anyone anymore and it makes the person he should have falling in love with cry because he is dead inside. The 'micro cuts' are barely noticable, just a slight irritation like a fork squeaking on a plate, but over time they result in disconnection from your higher self and becoming a media zombie. So carry on listening to good music and switch off the television!! TV is the opiate of the masses and this song is basically Matt screaming out against it and how angry it makes him. Love it! |

I love this song, the chorus has a really haunting melody and is the voice of truth in this. Famous people smooze and spout crap about not being a 'sell out' when really they mean they are insulted the offer was so low. Love the bit about how many times can they sell themselves until all the pieces are gone. There's never been a better description of how fucked up the world of celebrity is. A counterfeit is an inferior copy of an original - so these vacuous celebs are actually making themselves more worthless with every piece of fake bullshit they push on the public. Paris Hilton has got to be an inspiration for this, a person so shallow she even makes getting a best friend into a TV show because she is so unlikeable she can't find one herself!! 'Hire someone to find me a friend!!!!' I also think the song is very funny esp the 'Never again will I repeat myself bit' which he repeats a line later!! Like an old band saying - this is the last tour and then 10 years later wheeling themselves out again to record an album that sounds just like the last one! Hahaha! Going to listen to it again now... |

Cool song, seems to be a poem like a lot of SOAD songs and everyone has pretty much nailed it but thought I'd add another important note that the 'lighthouse' being the government or authorities are on the surface trying to help the ships avoid the rocks, like a normal lighthouse, but in fact the light is secretly a means for hypnotising people onto the rocks. |

Matt seems to have a few songs about people losing faith in him and pouring scorn on him making it in a band (muscle museum for one 'to prove I've made a big mistake'). If you know anything about Matt's early life his mum and dad split when he was a teenager so probably their supportative nature became more depressive and so they would no longer 'shine' and now he's begging 'please don't break my ideas'. These lines are the saddest and really show someone trying to maintain hope when people around him are being so negative: i believed that you'd always be here and once you promised a life with no fear please don't break my ideas Luckily for us whoever it was doubting him they didn't succeed in breaking his ideas so he could share them with us!!!! |

| One of my friends died in a car crash and this song always reminds me of him because he was such a nice bloke. He was really happy and always such a nice friendly person so I like the idea that he is watching me from above and reminding me to live life to the full as you never know when your time might be up. My friend did whatever made him happy, travelled europe and as a result of knowing him and this song I always try and seize upon any chance for fun or happiness. | This is one of my favourite songs and I've always interpreted it as a man having an affair with a woman and it's supposed to be a casual thing. Now she's actually about to break up with him and end it he is realising how much he likes her and is trying to persuade her to carry on the affair. The reason why she says she'll 'throw herself away' is because she's pissed off with him - I don't matter to you, I'm just your bit of fun, all surface (photographs are 2D - no depth to them) so why would you care if I just fucked off. Only at this point does he reveal how much he likes her, hench the 'I can't wash you off my skin' and 'I want a new mistake' parts. In order to end this relationship it'll take more than a moment's hesitation - kind of an 'am i doing the right thing' moment. In order for it to end he'll have to make a supreme effort and he just wants to Go With the Flow and carry on the affair. Love is not a romantic thing in this song it is a battlefield of soldiers, fighting as much as they are fucking!! | |
