Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's a song about trying/thinking about trying to be in a relationship as a person suffering from depression. he's saying he wants to spend time with her once (if) he feels better, because it's so hard to be with someone else when you're wrapped up in yourself and just depressed as fuck. I don't think it's a heartbreak song about an ex at all - why would he want to spend some good time with someone/not have their number if they just broke up/had a long, serious relationship? it seems a more light-hearted attachment than that, outside of the depression aspect. fucking great song, anyway. I just wanna have a dance party to it

what a fantastic song to discover the day of a break-up. and by fantastic I mean further heart-breaking

The Books – Motherless Bastard Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm glad other people feel the same way I do... the beginning is really disturbing to me too. I really hope that guy isn't the kid's real dad. that's such a cruel joke to play on a small child. at the same time I'd be SO interested to know where they found these vocals... I wish there was some place where they documented the origins of all their samples

Feist – Sea Lion Woman Lyrics 13 years ago
there are definitely extra syllables in the "sea lion woman" chorus at the end, specifically before 'woman'; does anyone know what they are?

also, I love the selkie theory!!!

Grizzly Bear – Little Brother Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't know what it means, but it makes me think of my oldest little brother. he's sixteen now and he's always been quiet and solemn and kept things to himself. he's the only one of us that isn't fucked

The National – Lit Up Lyrics 13 years ago
this sound I make
that only lasts the season
and only heard by bedroom kids who buy for that reason

HIPSTERS!!!
but this line also makes me think of how desolate it can be if you're an artist and you realize that whatever buzz may surround your stuff fades pretty fast.

The National – City Middle Lyrics 13 years ago
it made me think of anti-depressants or some other mood/mental health related drug. you know, they're finally got me on a good mixture, I'm feeling great, everything is great, etc. etc. etc., but it probably won't last long and I don't want to waste it.

Sufjan Stevens – Flint (For the Unemployed and Underpaid) Lyrics 13 years ago
I wish this had been written when Roger & Me was made. it would've fit really well (although maybe a little too aching and emotional for Michael Moore's sarcastic taste, I dunno)

does the bawling woman throw anyone else off? I only cry like that out of heartrending pain. gets me a little shaken up to hear it smack in the middle of a song like this

Owen Pallett – → Lyrics 14 years ago
this is a gorgeous little song. I can't believe no one's commented. just cause it's short don't mean it's meaningless...

there's a tension in Jenna's family due to her father's work/empire - he's wrapped up in it? he's trying to force her into following his footsteps? - which results in those quietly disastrous dining-room scenes with which everyone in an unhappy family is familiar. Jenna wants to die rather than sit through them. it's SO succinct and so well done.

I also thought the beheading part was kind of cool, because I originally thought he was saying that she was dreaming of being head of the table (leader in the family, taking over Daddy's business) but then it turns out to be just the opposite when you listen properly. Owen Pallett is such a brilliant writer I wouldn't be surprised if he did that on purpose

Owen Pallett – I'm Afraid Of Japan Lyrics 14 years ago
"and in the summer heat I lose my head" - made me think of Sufjan Steven's "Holland" the first time I heard it. kinda odd that the lyric is so similar, although I'm sure it's a coincidence

Wilco – Jesus, Etc. Lyrics 14 years ago
I dunno if I agree with the drug theory, but it definitely reminds me of Neil Young's the Needle and the Damage Done - "every junkie's like a setting sun"... that's what I thought of when I first listened to the lyrics

and I'm pretty sure it's strummed, although I guess both make sense

Norah Jones cover = no way. the orginial is about 5300 times better.

Arcade Fire – Haiti Lyrics 14 years ago
I_LOVE_CAMP: sorry about all the hate you've been getting, but I feel the need to put in my two cents... I've been on missions trips to "less fortunate countries" as well (Mexico, Costa Rica) and okay, it's a wonderful experience and probably incomparable to anything else. however, living in the community I do with the social conscience it has, I don't think I would ever go again - not because it's a bad thing, but because there are so many better things you can do that will help more. the cost of the plane ticket to Haiti, accommodations, food... it's a waste when you consider that you could instead send to the money with a reliable organization - and I mean really reliable, like you've researched exactly where the money goes - and use it to hire the citizens of that country (who are desperately looking for ways to support their families) to help rebuild their cities after the earthquake and also to help out in rural areas. in that way, the country of Haiti may be simultaneously rebuilt and strengthened, and helped to make it out of the hole in which they've been for far too long. it's not fair to storm them with foreign aid that only brings in foreign workers and foreign influences, when we could be paying the people of the country to do what needs to be done; it's a win-win. we should be helping them to get back on their feet in a way that's going to be constructive in the future, not just today.

*phew* long post. sorry. I just felt that your sentiment was well-meant, but not well-placed.

obviously the director of the video played on the "daddy's dumb" idea - two dirty hicks drinking in front of a trailer? nice. and if you do listen carefully, it's definitely "get rid of the more conservative habits of your mind."

Owl City – Fireflies Lyrics 14 years ago
a) Adam Young sounds nothing like Ben Gibbard. if you were at all familiar with Death Cab's music (not to mention lyrics, which far surpass anything Adam Young is capable of writing), you would realize that.
b) since everyone is entitled to his or her opinion... I find it sad that half the pre-teen/teenaged world is going crazy after this song. apologies for not being a 13-year-old with a bleeding heart but I find nothing very heartwarming about this song, just a guy who listened to some Postal Service, played around with some equipment, and recycled a bunch of well-worn love lyrics. the chorus is possibly the worst thing I've heard in a while. there's more genuine stuff than this out there; just because it's not on the radio doesn't negate its value.

sorry to burst all your bubbles. I know this is a song meanings site as opposed to a rant-at-crappy-artists forum, but I'm assuming that gives me a free reign to comment if the song means nothing to me, am I right? Owl City sucks.

Dirty Projectors – Useful Chamber Lyrics 14 years ago
Dave Longstreth supposedly named the album 'Bitte Orca' because he liked the way the words sounded next to eachother. nothing more. sorry for all you addicts out there; not every song has to do with sex........

and on a completely unrelated note, the intro to this song is golden
