Tool – The Patient Lyrics

for those of you that want a real interpretation: C.S. Lewis wrote a book called the Screwtape Letters--a christian satire that is about a demon guiding a junior level demon on how to keep a man out of heaven. he (screwtape) tells the junior demon (wormwood) that the key to successfully taking a man is through boredom and confussion, rather than to get him to something entirely evil. ("the safest path to hell is a gradual one")
what does this have to do with this song? the lyrics clearly show that the narrator is questioning his own faith and is continuously choosing this tedious path of some sort.
so what's the main kicker in all of this? throughout the 'Screwtape Letters', the demons always refer to the man in question as...you guessed it..."the patient"

i think that casey puts meaning behind the WAY he sings as well. "one life for another" seems too angry to be starting a new life--the way its sung just seems like irrational emotions wanted to seek revenge from his mom's killer |

The Receiving End Of Sirens – The Epilogue Lyrics

seems like the whole album is a conflict between your heart and reason. The hidden track sounds very robotic in terms of the vocals...very droning too. maybe the brain won over the heart? that would be a shame... |
