The Kinks – Lola Lyrics 15 years ago
I've never heard the whole album, but that makes a lot of sense. I like your definition, it's very interesting and well thought out.

Alexandra Burke – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
Here's the thing: Alexandra Burke has a beautiful voice and all, but this version is WAAAAAAY overproduced. If someone had heard her song and never heard any other version, they would think it's pretty and all but forget about it. I compared it to Jeff Buckley's version, and couldn't believe how much better his was. She has the voice for the song, it's just she didn't put enough emotion into it and the ridiculous orchestra that comes in at the end is so cliche it isn't even funny. Quite honestly I'd take the original (Leonard Cohen, who wrote the song but who's voice isn't that great) over hers any day. I'm not saying her version is bad, I'm just saying it's BORING.

Although, I do prefer her version to Bob Dylan's. Although I adore pretty much every one of Bob Dylan's songs and covers, I hate his version of this song.

Blur – Badhead Lyrics 15 years ago
This is probably one of the hardest Blur songs to decipher the meaning, but I think I have the basic premise.

Like def_linus said, it's about two friends who haven't really kept in touch with each other. Because there isn't much excitement going on (due to lack of jobs, lack of school, ect), both are too apathetic to keep human relationships because they are too busy being alone themselves. Because there is nothing to do, they seclude themselves from the rest of the world in their homes, and entertain themselves by watching tv or going on the internet and wasting time, forgetting calling each other, not because they dislike each other but because they're too lazy to call. But this boredom isn't a good thing, because even though in the beginning they like the loneliness, they eventually get depressed because of the loneliness and regret it, "Well I knew as much it's no surprise that today/I get up for round two with nothing to do/Except get a touch of flu". But even though they both know that they should call because that would be better for their social life and they wouldn't be as bored, they've gotten used to the apathy, and would rather "grin and bear it/Because it's not worth the trouble of an argument". Their friendship is of immense importance when they're around each other, but when apart they don't care for each other enough to call and keep in touch. Their relationship is that they only remain friends because they laugh at each other's jokes, "And in any case i'd rather wear it/It's like a badhead in the morning" (a badhead being the awful hair do you have when you get up, it makes you laugh but really it's not that big a deal).

So, in short, their friendship according to the narrator isn't that deep or important, and he'd rather be in complete seclusion than try to have a human relationship because that's easier than having to call and care about people. Their relationship is "Not worth the trouble of an argument". He'd rather wear/bear the boredom of being alone than remain friends with someone who doesn't interest them immensly.

I personally can really relate to this song, especially during winter break now, because I haven't called anybody. Like most Blur songs, it's very sad and observational.

Blur – B.L.U.R.E.M.I. Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about the way trends from earlier years and types of music come back into use. Example: Britpop is brought back from 60's mod music. It could also be about plagiarism, seeing that another pop group is stealing an older pop groups sound, and feeding it to the new generation that's too ignorant to see that it's all been done before.

Blur – Song 2 Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, I never thought of it that way. I was always told that this was a rag on American's and grunge music, and the lyrics weren't supposed to make sense because grunge music lyrics don't ever make sense. But, thinking about it, your analysis makes loads of sense... and it's funny!

Katy Perry – I Kissed a Girl Lyrics 15 years ago
I actually found another meaning to the song than just exploring your sexuality.

For one, Katy Perry was originally Katy Hudson, and she was a religious singer. My thought are that also this song is representative of her departure from her (failed) first religious album, and in order to do that she mentions taboo topics that are supposedly "against the Bible". (I don't think they are, but whatever.) It could mean this song is also about disobeying and defying your parents, for Perry defying her parents doing "not what good girls do".

Blur – Bang Lyrics 15 years ago
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's about the apathy alot of people have about love these days. Although marriage was always viewed (for the upper-classes at least) as a political thing, I think it's sorta true because anyone can get divorced these days and getting married and staying together through the ups and downs isn't a big deal that everyone must abide to, people don't really "try" to hard any more. (In NO way am I saying divorce is bad.) It's also about the apathy about life and the monotony of it. Lines like "Bang goes another day/Where it went I could not say/Now I'll have to wait another week" hint at monotony and pointlessness in daily life, and lines like "Where all is said and all is done/What was said was never done/Dont panic/It's not really worth your while" are about broken promises between couples that don't really matter anymore because love is so cheap and easy to find these days. "Everybody's doing it so do it too" is such a jab at conformity it isn't even funny. And of course the chorus, "I don't need anyone/But a little love/Would make things better" is also about the cheapening of love.

In short, I view this song as a jab to the modern married couple; the husband/wife coming home after a typical day that is pointless, then the apathetic love that follows with it. Love doesn't really matter anymore since there are more things on everyone's mind, people just get married and date people because it's expected and if you don't, then you are frowned upon. "I don't need anyone/But a little love/Would make things better" means "I don't really want to have to get married, but because society would mock me if I didn't then I will to make my life easier."

If you think about it, this song is very sad and very true.

R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People Lyrics 15 years ago
Like most people, I think it's sarcastic. In today's world, there's no way that anyone could be that happy and innocent.

I think the lyric that determines the meaning is "There's no time to cry", which (to me) seems like a stab at censorship. It's all about how over-innocent people try to force older children to be, even when they aren't. And also, the denial people have over the real world, and trying to make everything to seem like "nothing will ever go wrong" when in truth, life is life and there are good parts and bad parts. It's about people sheltering others and the ignorance it breeds, I think. Same with the line, "Meet me in the crowd", it means make me like all the others, let me conform to blissful ignorance.

Of course I could be completely wrong and it is a happy song about love and peace, but I think it's sarcastic just by the ridiculousness of the line "shiny happy people." Still, I won't deny that this song makes me feel extremely happy.
