Maybe a bit easier, but I'm sure there's a lot more to it here- for one thing, it makes me think of criminals on the run somewhere desolate. I'm picturing a Bonnie and Clyde type of thing, who are tired of that life -in "references like "Let's leave behind these maps and handguns" and "Come on catch us if you can" and "There's still no shortage in creating bad blood"(lots of criminal opportunities in California?)-but it may be just me. Maybe in Mexico...."Hear the rebels yelling out in the dunes". Get this song! This song needs no interpretation, but it's such a wonderful song, I wish more people would hear it, and it's not even on any of their albums. It's one of my all-time favorite songs and it Never Fails to make me feel better. It's just so lovely and warm and sweet without being sticky or preachy. I could listen to it every day. I got it from indiefeed podcast and I think it was on some indie compilation album. |

It's hard to make out, but I'm not sure about the "a manner to act..." correction, even though that IS the track title, lol. "Would it matter.." makes more sense and it sounds like it to me, but who knows? The rest of the song is a bit cryptic anyway, any ideas about what it means? |

| just a thought, "chemical" could refer to having chemistry with someone, which goes along with the title, virtue, if you don't, but maybe wine when you do....("the things we shouldn't do") ;) His songs tend to be more about the trickiness of relationships and not about drug/alcohol problems. Maybe an attraction to someone whose not good for you or doesn't return the feelings. | |

Such a beautiful song, I just heard it once, and I'm in love with it. I sure wish I knew what it was about! Any ideas out there? Even without a clue I feel like he's describing how I feel sometimes, luckily not today. :) I thought the first verse it sounded like person singing it has died, but it could just be metaphors. A long stone and my day's all serpentine (long stone-gravestone?) (serpentine shadows on the graveyard at the end of the day?) The tired tarnish in my chest rests sense of SARS (he died of SARS?) And one dull dawn where they hum that splits its length (beautiful line...what is the loud humming noise in the morning at the cemetary? machines for digging? Does my name sting your tongue? Now does it babe? (when she remembers feels guilty?) But then the 2nd and 3rd don't seem to go with that idea...so it's probably something else. The lyrics are so amazing. |

I just get such a chuckle out of all the people who take the time to get an account and post-- just to inform us that song lyrics are all literal, and need no interpretation by anyone, they have no symbolism whatsoever! So helpful they are, now no one ever needs to think about it or discuss it again, lol. Reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel's "I Am a Rock"-- a song probably written by granite-people. I can't improve on "heavy"s post, saying it's about "criticism on our society and the direction the world is headed as a whole." I wanted to believe the more positive spins at first, but it just doesn't ring true to me. |

I found some very interesting stuff about this song on http://www.fleetwoodmac.net/penguin/interpretations/b/beautifulchild.htm. None of it confirmed, but it sounds very likely and well-informed. It was from a lyric interpretation board on the fleetwood mac website, fans. Apparently Stevie Nicks, who wrote and sings this, had a relationship, secretly- for a long time, since she was young, with Mick Fleetwood, who is much older than she is. Even the band didn't know. She partly wants to leave, but is not independent enough or loves him too much to leave. At the end of the song she is grown and independent, but still struggles with letting go of her dependence on him. I found it mentioned on wikipedeia as well.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_Nicks) Other interpretation on the FM site was that, "She fell in love with someone beautiful, but immature (like a child). She feels like a fool for having fall in love with this man. This could also indicate that she fell in love easily throughout her life." |

Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt. It looks to me like divorce. I agree with the above interpretations about a relationship gone wrong, then the part about "I read every word, and I still don't understand" could be divorce papers, or a dear john letter -- you wanted it to last, so you don't understand how it could come to this. And you have to "sign the line". Maybe he's in line to file the papers, I don't know. And ying and yan represents opposite qualities or male and female. And yes, he tries to turn to spirituality for help, but it doesn't change the situation or make it go away. In the relationship, you are always arguing, "Whether you win or lose Isn't gonna change a single thing". It stills hurts and it's still over. You feel hopeless. On the other hand, it could easily be some other situation, like dealing with a negative story about you in the newspaper, or a letter denying you your goals, your dreams, hence the title, "pipe dreams". Wiki- "A pipe dream is a fantastic hope or plan that is generally regarded as being nearly impossible to achieve." I like what violetzebras said, "I think this song is about being stuck in a really hopeless place. Just living every single day in the same way and not finding any joy in your life. " leaving it more general, to many situations. |

Of all the tributes and all the speeches, documentaries done for 911, this one always moved me the most from the first time I heard it. It still brings me to tears, but also makes me feel proud for those on that flight. One of the most amazing stories ever, if I saw a movie of it and didn't know any better, I'd say it was over the top and could not happen irl. It's perfect just the way it is--like any good Neil Young song he can convey deepest emotions without overdoing it. Just as a whisper can speak much louder than a yell. I can imagine being on that flight, hearing about the towers after the hijackers took over, and knowing you have to give up the lives everyone on the flight to save others on the ground. And hey, watch it--when you said "mike" I thought you meant mike, our fearless admin! :P Anywho, don't let yourself get so upset if a few don't get a song or don't see it's worth--there's always SOMEONE who doesn't. So let's not flame over it, just explain the song, and they or others on the site will get it. :) |

Thank goodness we are all different human beings, so we all express ourselves differently, therefore just agree to disagree,:) And can all find different meanings in a song, hence this site. :D If "some people change" is a great truth in life (it is), then so is "people like what they like". And it's ok. I adore this song--one of my all-time favorites I never tire of, shear brilliance. It had meant differnt things to me at differnt times, but always hope. Hope when I see someone being unfair/unkind, even to me, not to hate back, but see who they could be someday, or hope for myself when it feels like everything I've done has gone wrong, like now. Someday even I could change. rocker's comment inspired me, thanks. I wish when I was down, I had had a friend like you. "Thank God for those who make it Let them be the light Some people change" This part is a beautiful reminder to use your strength and courage to pull others up, not put them down or see yourself as superior. |

I wondered where/what it it about Ann Street, so I googled. Fascinating! Too long to quote here, but basically they have a tradition of a crazy Mardis Gras parade and week long celebration. They burned palms at their house parties, instead of at church and fires often started.
