The Dead Milkmen – Beach Party Vietnam Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Cookin' hot dogs with napalm" cracks me up every time. |
Minutemen – One Reporters Opinion Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Something I think that's pretty funny is that this song was written by Mike Watt, so he pretty much just made fun of himself with this song. Watt must've liked it too, because on his first solo album, "Ball-Hog or Tugboat?" he did a cover of this song. |
Minutemen – The Punch Line Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It speaks for itself. George Custer was a man seen as a hero for fighting Indians and he died in combat at the Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as "Custer's Last Stand." The song basically says even though he was regarded as a hero while he was alive, he died as a coward. |
Pavement – Fight This Generation Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I love the live version on the Sordid Sentinels version of Wowee Zowee. In it, he also says "Jonathan Yardley" instead of just "Yardley" who is a book critic for the Washington Post. Why they referenced him, I have no idea... |
Minutemen – I Felt Like A Gringo Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is a song about the band's Fourth of July trip to Mexico (the same trip "Corona" was written about), hence the line "Why'd I spend the Fourth in someone else's country?" Other lines seem to point out the hardships of Mexico - from sleeping in American trash to not being able to "buy a good time" to the "soldiers in the street." This is one of my favorite Minutemen songs - from the awesome intro/outro/bridge riff where they all play in unison to D.'s soloing towards the end. |
Minutemen – Martin's Story Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The song title is a reference to Martin Tamburovich, the singer for The Reactionaries (the band Mike, D., and George were members of before starting The Minutemen). He's even got credits for co-writing it with Mike on the album credits. |
Minutemen – Viet Nam Lyrics | 15 years ago |
LawdyMama: The only other band I know of that did something similar is The Dead Milkmen with their song "Beach Party Vietnam." When he talks about the numbers in the first verse, 50,000 is an approximation of the number of American troops who died in Vietnam and 500,000 was an approximation of the total number of American troops who were sent there. That means about 10% of the US soldiers died. It's a pretty straightforward Vietnam protest song made after the war was over. Just one of several of the band's anti-war songs. |
Ween – Leave Deaner Alone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
As of right now, there's no official recording of this song, but it shows up at some of their live shows. Deaner does lead vocals on it, so he refers to himself in third person during the chorus. There's also an awesome solo that comes up after the second chorus. Obviously the meaning of the song is the fact that Deaner is sick of all the obnoxious fans asking him the same annoying questions over and over. |
Ween – Strap On That Jammy Pac Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song makes me wonder what a jammy pac is. |
Minutemen – Ack Ack Ack Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's obviously an anti-war song. Basically it says we glorify people like Johnny for winning wars (All the papers write about Johnny/All the radios shout out his name), but in reality, killing someone shouldn't seem like something to celebrate (He grabbed his gun and shot me down/Ack ack ack ack). Those last two lines really send a chill down my spine every time I hear them. By the way, did anyone see the music video for this song? (Yes, they actually made a music video for a song that's not even 30 seconds long.) It's a hilarious video - they pay a tribute to The Three Stooges by acting like them in the video. |
Minutemen – Take 5, D. Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics were originally gonna be more abstract like most of Watt's lyrics, but D. said he thought they were "too spacey." Watt agreed to rewrite the song and said "There ain't nothing going to be more real." He then used a note from his friennd's landlady nearly word for word. |
Beck – Sweet Sunshine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics are off. I think they're supposed to be: Touch me on the inside with a finger full of gravy Gonna get you on the sofa, lady wanna shake and bake me Bucket full of blood, got you on my mind Gonna break my face on the sweet sunshine Bucket full of blood, got you on my mind Gonna break my face on the sweet sunshine I wanna get up off the floor, I wanna run to the devil and get me some more I wanna get up off the floor, I wanna run to the devil and get me some more Bottle full of pain with a hog's head screaming With a scumbag soul and a body always screaming Grab your wine, tell me where you been With a violin cryin' and the moon gettin' thin Grab your wine, tell me where you been With a violin cryin' and the moon gettin' thin I wanna climb up on the wall, I wanna swing through the city on a wreckin' ball I wanna climb up on the wall, I wanna swing through the city on a wreckin' ball Hail to the dawning of the plentiful sensation 'Cause the town is full of sound and I killed my imagination Bucket full of blood, got you on my mind Gonna break my face on the sweet sunshine Bucket full of blood, got you on my mind Gonna break my face on the sweet sunshine I wanna get up off the floor, I wanna run to the devil and get me some more I wanna get up off the floor, I wanna run to the devil and get me some more Then again, the vocals on this song are really hard to interpret because of all the weird distortion on it. I honestly have no clue what this song is about. On one hand, it sounds like it could be about addiction, with lines like "I wanna run to the devil and get me some more" and the "sweet sunshine" is whatever you're addicted to. I can also see it having something to do with masturbation or sex. Though knowing Beck's Mellow Gold era songwriting, he probably just made them up from the top of his head like he did with Loser, Steal My Body Home, and a few others. I think one of the weirdest things about this song is that it's called "Sweet Sunshine," yet it sounds so...dark. Maybe he was going for that, so he threw in some dark-sounding lyrics for ironic purposes? |
Camper Van Beethoven – Where The Hell Is Bill? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Martin got it right, this is a song about their former drummer, Bill McDonald. He was always late for practice and sometimes didn't show up, so they wrote this song making fun of him. |
Minutemen – It's Expected I'm Gone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To answer your question, they were written by Mike Watt. I love the drumming in this song. |
