Land of Talk – Quarry Hymns Lyrics 13 years ago
I finally got my Cloak+Cipher vinyl in, and SURPRISE SURPRISE.......it comes with lyrics! Lizzie Powell is finally shedding light on the mystery.

So, these are definitely the corrected lyrics:

Leave it on the hottest day
To sink this quarry under
What the murder on the pride would bring
Lion, crow, your kingdom
Loaded in the stone heart
I couldn't keep the woods in you
You had to learn about the hardest things
The softest side would leave you

And on days like these
I could take apart my window
So let down
I was so let down

(chorus):
How deep is this soul I feel I'm in?
Seen a lot of light and done a lot with it
How deep is this hole I feel I'm in?
Seen a lot of light and done a lot with it

In the least of the lighted
Eyes was on a roll
And the deep and the sweet hearth
Couldn't keep the word in you
You can draw it in and draw it back
Pull the past behind you
You wanna leave I got it back
You can draw it in and draw it back

(chorus x1)

Lately little love could call
And get in my way
Maybe we could draw this out
of our dark display (x2)

(chorus x1)

Company of Thieves – The Fire Song Lyrics 15 years ago
I read in an interview with either Marc or Genevieve that this song was a dream that she had about her parents divorce and the subsequent break-up of her family. Makes sense. It makes some of the lines terribly sad.

i think it's actually "heads filled with blurry".

The acoustic version with a string section on the Bonus Tracks of Ordinary Riches is AGH AMAZING.

Eisley – Just Like We Do Lyrics 15 years ago
I think there are definite allusions to the narrator being in love with someone that others don't approve of. (He's perceived as a sinner or bad guy.)

In the first verses, she's reassuring him that their love is like all other loves and there isn't anything wrong with it, that she doesn't ask for anything more than him, that she wants him. She's asking him to hold on through the criticism.

She recognizes his past; they both do. We all do things we regret, but we've learned not to repeat our mistakes. "We won't go looking for trouble"

I still don't quite get the reference to the hands growing...maybe it means his care was growing even through/because of the bad situations.

aside from the melody, these next lines are my favorite part of the song
"And we still see through their planks, shifted laughs
We'll hold the hands of sinners and then we will pass "

Biblical reference--one of the things I love about eisley. From the book of Matthew. This passage is about judging one another. "First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Basically, she's saying, they see past everyone's judgments, through their cynical sneers because their love is better than that. Beautiful. This song reminds me of summers in love.

Land of Talk – Got a Call Lyrics 15 years ago
I hear "Here's the only thing..." instead of "it's the only thing"
and "In the darkness, dance to the dial tone" instead of "dares"..

something else is being said around "alone"...is it even alone? haha sometimes her lyrics are so hard to decipher.

i don't think it's about a break-up per se. i think it's about not being able to be in a relationship because of her life on the road as a musician. the call sounds like it's coming from a guy she had feelings for, but he can't reciprocate because he's paranoid about the things she does on the road, the partying, etc.

reflecting on this, she tries to deny her pain, claiming he wasn't that great anyway. yet, she admits that she loved him like they were together, although all she has are the dreams of what they could have had.

the thing that gets her by, that she cherishes like a secret weapon, is that although she's going through these personal struggles (though it always rains), people can relate to the heartbreak in her songs and that may help heal their wounds (a billion hearts stop bleeding).

the last verse kills me. "i party all the time, yeah i know how to kill, but i hate how it feels that everyone's in love with someone else."

i know, as a young single gal myself, that exact feeling. you spend a lot of time partying, drinking, having fun. but sometimes at the end of the night, you can't escape that horrible feeling of going home alone to no one, and it seems like everyone is in love with someone else.

An Horse – Little Lungs Lyrics 15 years ago
I saw them play Thursday, and Kate hilariously dedicated this song to raccoon roadkill that they had happened upon earlier in the day. She couldn't stop chuckling at herself and on the first verse sang instead,"...and that raccoon is in he-elll." haha

I just submitted an updated, corrected version of these lyrics. Hopefully, they go through.

I kind of wish the line was "And I didn't reply to your letter because I'm not an idiot," or that it was both. It would really add to the bittersweetness of the song (heavy on the bitter..ha).

I can't tell if this song is about a failed relationship because someone has cheated (or perhaps some type of abuse--domestic, emotional, or substance), hence all of the anger in the first verse. Or is it about a parent's divorce? Or something completely different than any of these?

Regardless, it's obvious that whoever she's having this dialogue with has done something in the past to make a mess of things, which caused her great anger. She "gets it now", so the anger is dissipating, but sometimes that coldness inside returns to her--so to speak. I think the "they" who are telling her to just breathe, could be references to friends or perhaps specialists/psychologists.

The bridge is my favorite part. I love Damon's distorted shout/sing in the background. And the whole sound behind Kate's vocals, how accusatory 'You changed this all' is gives me chills. The 'I'm not here yet' really lends to the idea that she's still trying to heal about what happened. The offender (well that just makes it sound like a crime) tried to contact her about what happened (letter), but she's not ready.

Oren Lavie – Her Morning Elegance Lyrics 15 years ago
i do actually have something to add after all. i don't think that it's so much that people just aren't noticing that she's lonely or in a slump...i think oren's saying, "nobody knows how wonderful she is. no one knows the beauty that i see. she could be a ray of light in this rainy world if anybody would take the time to notice."

just a new way to look at it.

i was going to post a comment, thinking that everyone had missed the metaphors at the beginning all being about the girl and her solitary, displaced life......but you nailed it.

i think the song's pace not only captures that anxious feeling that arises when you're trying to make sense of it all but also the sluggish feeling when you don't want to drag yourself out of bed to do it. i love when he does that falsetto..

Damien Rice – Delicate Lyrics 15 years ago
despite 117 comments of the admiring, interpretive, and even argumentative nature being made on this song already, i feel the need to share something i considered while listening to this song on the way home tonight. of course, i'm coming at it from too recent of a personal experience (as i'm sure many before me have).

i can see it being about secret lovers, although secret love affairs never seem as romantic as they'd like us to believe...i think it's mostly lust in that kind of situation. this speaks of a more bittersweet situation. say in this scenario, one person has had feelings for the other, that punch drunk love that's idealistic and hopeful...anticipating what could be a fantastic relationship because everything just seems right, but the other person won't reciprocate it. in fact, they tell person A that they don't desire that. that hope is replaced with sorrow, but one that person A (for lack of a better differentiation) knows they have to move on from. right when all is seemingly mended, a kiss, making out, sex happens.

so, person A is wondering if person B is scared (to commit/to be open with their feelings). but, no that's not it...it's just that the matter is delicate. a casual encounter holds more wait because of the history, and person A's sorrow is filled again as person B is regretful that it even took place. i think "the word's that you borrowed from the only place you know" alludes to an apology that person A just doesn't want to accept. like, why are you saying sorry...word's borrowed from the only place you know (a sorry place).

person A knows that if person B could just feel the same way, they "could live like never before", but person B has "nothing to give", but person A's heart is still asking for more.

...wow, it's a wonder i get home alive spacing out in the car like i do.. haha

Land of Talk – Some Are Lakes Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree. It's definitely bovine eyes, which is a pretty clever way of describing great big brown eyes (like a cow...bovine, eyyyyy).

At first, I thought this was about her losing someone she loves to sickness. Then, I realized she's actually the one who's sick. It could be a disease, but I honestly think she's fighting a serious addiction. It might help if I knew which lyrics to trust. haha I need to listen to this song again...which is so easy because it's so damn good.

Ingrid Michaelson – Spare Change Lyrics 15 years ago
I just listened to the audio book, "Wolf at the Table", tonight. This song plays right after Augusten's final few sentences.

"Even though the sky is still bright, I can see the moon and beside it three stars, or are they planets? I know that behind these three stars in the darkness that is hidden now by light, there are other planets and numberless stars, whole galaxies just like ours, other worlds. And maybe on one of them, there is another me. And I am wearing my green robe with my name stitched onto the chest. And I am standing on stage as somebody hands me my diploma. And out in the audience, all I can see is the radiance of one man whose eyes are so shining blue, they blind me. And he is smiling and weeping and he is my father and he loves me with all the force of the expanding universe. He looks up at me and mouths the words, "Very much, I love you."

God, it broke my heart. What a touchingly sad book from Augusten, and what a hauntingly beautiful song from Ingrid. This song very much has to do with the realization Augusten came to that his father really missed out on his son, on what could be his greatest achievement...to be a good, loving father.

An Horse – Camp Out Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is a stage that most twentysomething's go through. It's being confused about love, mostly about finding out what love's not, and not feeling guilty about just wanting to fool around. It's every relationship before you fall in love. It's not regretting all of them, because we'd "do it all again, just to get where I am". It's about not being ready to settle down with anyone.

I love this song. I'm totally at this stage in my life.

My favorite part is:

And I am surprised how this fits together
I’m surprised how we fit together
And that I will remember
Oh and that I will remember

To me, it's so obviously about hooking up with someone when you're intoxicated. It's always surprising how well you fit together, and possibly even more surprising that you'll remember in the morning.

Kaki King does do a great version of this, too. Check it out on youtube!

Gregory and the Hawk – I'm Your Puppet Lyrics 15 years ago
I showed Gregory and the Hawk to a friend the other night, and he said he wasn't sure it was for him. I asked why. His reply was, "She always seems to sing about some asshole that's using her." haha
Isn't that the unfortunate truth?

That's probably why I love her songs.

I noticed a small correction:
Because I know if it clouds, rains, snows
You won't be there

and... We've a secret instead of weave a secret. (I guess it makes sense either way..)

My favorite line: How weak is that?
My friends and I say that all the time. haha

William Fitzsimmons – Funeral Dress Lyrics 15 years ago
william is such a brilliant musician. i was hooked when i heard this song.

this song really could be about the death of a relationship or a person.

"don't worry if laughter is on your lips
because you wouldn't be you if you changed for this
and i won't measure love from the tears that drip on your face"

i think that's one of the most beautiful and unselfish things you could possibly say. i recently lost a friend to a freak car accident, and i imagine it's what she would say to me if she could. it's like, "you need to keep existing. don't worry if you're laughing. don't change because i'm gone. i know you still love me, even if the tears have stopped. it's okay."

it was certainly a confusing stir of emotions when i laughed for the first time after her death. i almost felt guilty.

at the same time, the third verse seems to speak from the perspective of a serious relationship that's ended:
i should hope that it should turn out fine
but i hope that some sadness does cross your mind
and you'll look for me when you have crossed that line
come one day

when a relationship has ended, you want to wish your lover well, while hoping they feel a mutual sadness every once and awhile because they've lost you. and, sometimes, you hope they'll think of you when they're finally ready to settle down/commit one day.

this song is so perfect.

Rachael Yamagata – Sunday Afternoon Lyrics 15 years ago
I get chills when she sings, "you're scared, scared, scared.....because i feel like home."

I originally saw her play this song on one of those vh1 live performances when it was just a demo. I gotta say that I really prefer that version to the one on the album. Don't get me wrong, both are great. There was something so raw and painful about that live one, though.

Rachael Yamagata – Sidedish Friend Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't believe there aren't more comments on this song!!

This one is definitely my favorite from the new album so far. It's just so great to turn it up while driving.

Making someone a "sidedish friend" is such a defense mechanism. You know you have someone hooked with the physical relationship, but until you can get them to admit to an emotional one, you pretend that you only want them as a fling on the side.

Tegan and Sara – His Love Lyrics 15 years ago
They did this thing for Spin Magazine together with Augusten reading some excerpts from his book and Tegan playing "His Love" and some The Con songs. You can find some videos of it on youtube.

The entire time I read Wolf at the Table, this song played in the back of my head. After reading the book, I can't hear the song without getting emotional. It's really a wonderfully written albeit terrifying account of his sadistic father, and I think this song nailed it.

Tegan and Sara – Where Does the Good Go Lyrics 15 years ago
I considered myself pretty lucky to discover Tegan and Sara a few months before my first big break-up. This song was on straight up repeat for weeks. haha I so wanted to say, "Look me in the eye and tell me you don't find me attractive" defiantly and pathetically follow up with "Look me in the heart and tell me you won't go.."

I think this song is mid break-up. You know that kind of interim in a relationship when you're deciding whether to stay together or to go separate ways. I also always considered the idea that one of the partners in the relationship did something despicable like cheat or simply become uncaring/uninterested because of the line, "What do you say, it's up for grabs now that you're on your way down." Although that could refer to the way we hold someone at such high esteem when we love them, and then when they break our hearts, they suddenly become the center of our anger or sadness and our opinion of them takes a nose dive.

Man, I still love this song!

Tegan and Sara – Where Does the Good Go Lyrics 15 years ago
LISTEN TO THE CON! So Jealous is an amazing album, but their most recent release just took it all a step further in terms of musicality and lyrics. I'm such a Tegan and Sara junkie, so I might be a little biased...haha I'm sure you'll end up becoming one, too, if you aren't by now anyway. :)

By the way, just for context, the song is most likely about a gal and a gal...since they're both lesbians.

Gregory and the Hawk – The Bolder Thing to Do Lyrics 15 years ago
I've totally been there. You probably hear this a lot, but you should really just come out with it. It's terrifying, but going on the same way is just so unfair to you, to him, to any other potential boyfriends or girlfriends that come into your lives because you're always wondering if someday he's gonna get it and you'll finally be together. Unfortunately, not everyone's life is Maid of Honor, like in my case. haha But, we're still best friends, and we still love each other, but I finally gave myself some wounds that would actually heal, so to speak--y'know? The trick is to be open, even if it's scary as shit.

Best of luck,

Gregory and the Hawk – The Bolder Thing to Do Lyrics 15 years ago
i really love playing this song. it's so simple, but it really goes along with the idea that she's just having this up front conversation with a guy who's jerking her around.

'so let me down softly this time and
I wont have to come back cryin''

these lines always get me. we chronic comfort daters (who always run back to ex's) know we'll go back, but it'll be so much easier if we're let down easy. and they're always so impartial, aren't they?
