Blonde Redhead – SW Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This line captures the meaning of the song pretty clearly: "It's not, it's not what it seems ... It's not what it seems." The song is about how the external life can differ from the internal life--it's not what it seems. He is not what he seems. His actions are not what they seem. It's the meaning behind his actions that is essential to who he is--the overt can obfuscate the truth. "It's not, it's not what you give but it's what you kept It's not, it's not who you kill but it's who you left" ^Looking at the actions of this person will not lead you to the correct insight about who he is--you can observe what a person gives in a relationship and who a person hurts, but it's not as obvious what a person keeps for themselves and doesn't share with others (and why) or the root of the personality traits that lead him to harm someone else years later. "It's not, it's not how you speak but it's what you said. It's not, it's not what you seek but it's what you have." ^This person's delivery is at odds with the intent of his speech, which is to say that this is someone who hides his true intentions under a seemingly lovely patina. To see the truth about him, you need to look at the results he is trying to elicit despite the flowery language. Words are being used to conceal thoughts. The second line is a little less clear, a little more potentially nuanced. I actually think it's from the perspective of the guy described, saying that this life isn't what he wants, but it's what he has. And then the repeated stanza is from the man's perspective: "I am I am running in my head I am I am lying on my left I am I am growing in my bed I am I am..." ^Same meaning, from his perspective. His body is in bed, his intentions and thoughts, however, are diametrically opposed to what his physical form might be doing. You can't look at this guy's overt self and understand him or know him; the truth about who he really is and what he really wants is... not what it seems. |

Tanita Tikaram – I Love You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"Brought up on love and the reasons why but the reasons why ought not to be said and so I'm left hands held to my head" Johnny was rich, and brought up to believe that he needed to fall in love with someone with equal status and money, who would be his social match. A cookie-cutter woman. Johnny and the artist fell in love, and they tried to make it work, but: "Gold and waves and Betty Blue Are the images that lead to the clues of why I can't love you" Gold = money, waves = distance, Betty Blue = obsession. They were in love, but she was just so opposite to what Johnny's life could accept that in the end he left her. |

I like you so much, just stay here with me and feel this emotion between us and I'll keep you safe. Adorable, gorgeous song. |
Anna Nalick – In The Rough Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I actually don't use the "abusive boyfriend" interpretation. To me, the diamonds the guy (I actually take her lover to be female, I'm just using 'guy' for convenience) was holding when he fell were supposed to represent a beautiful woman he cheated on the singer with. And she doesn't offer any sympathy for his 'apology' for cheating on her, or for him being left alone because she leaves for his infidelity. But she comes back to him, and he tells her that he's changed and won't cheat again. He does, and she leaves. She comes back yet again, and he cheats, yet again. She leaves again, finally realizing that she, like those women he cheated on her with, is a diamond. She's undiscovered so far though- in the rough-, and that she wants a lover who will see her for what she is. She wants a lover whose love will transform her into a diamond in his eyes. She wants to be enough for someone. |
Mimi Goese – Fire & Roses Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is one of my most often played songs. I interpret it a few different ways, depending on (of course) my mood. 1) The way I interpret it is that the woman singing has a lot constantly overwhelming her, making her feel things, consuming her, pushing her under the water and drowning her, if you will. And that's her life; battling dragons, finding ways to swim and float is her life. It's hectic and it's a challenge, but she needs that "fire", that challenge, that difficulty. She needs to be in danger of drowning. But at the same time, she has a lover who has to be able to challenge her- be the "fire"- and be sensitive enough to make her feel secure and loved- she wants roses. The lover has to "walk along" that "fine line", and she can't make it any easier for him/her because that's just who she is, plain and simple. She's a woman who needs to feel both challenged and beloved. And it's hard because when her lover doesn't provide for once type of her emotional needs- she may realize that she's expecting perhaps too much and that (s)he does love her, but can't read minds- she feels that darkness. If he gives her fire when she wants roses, she feels like her lover might be getting tired of tight-rope walking for her, and if he gives her roses and forgets about the fire, she's not getting what she needs. She's in the security of that relationship, but she sees the rain threatening it. She sees her rain threatening it. She always sees that darkness/rain as being able to consume her love / her lovers love. 2) Sometimes I feel like the singer has sunk into a numb kind of depression, but still has her lover who tries to help her, who tries to pull her out of herself and get her to feel something. And it's like, she wants to feel something and she does appreciate her lover trying to connect her with the world, but she sometimes wonders if the lover still loves her, or just wants her to be something different. And she ties to fight the depression and stay with her lover when it hits, but she's not strong enough. She gets sucked under. She needs to occasionally feel something; she recognizes that the numbness isn't enough, for her or for her lover, but she can't help but be sucked into the cold water by the tidal force of her depression. When she is pulled into the numbness, she sees her lover tight-rope walking, trying to be what she needs, but she can't do anything to help him/her. She's stuck in her self, in her numbness, in her depression. She's cold, staring at this person who she loves and who loves her, but she can't feel that love when she gets sucked under. All she feels/sees is her own nothingness. I really don't have one way of seeing this song. It's so subjective (or at least I treat it that way), and I love, love, love it. |
Leaves' Eyes – Lovelorn Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Contextually, I'm thinking Amelie is the person she loved. Now that Amelie has died, the singer is lovelorn. And needs someone to blame, which is what I take the "I can't forgive God and Myself" bit to mean. Amelie drowned. The singer feels like she should have been there, and that somehow either she or God is to blame. The song is about the loss of her love. |
The Deadly Syndrome – Wolves In The Garden Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The guy's behavior is the opposite of what my own is. I'll destroy the flow/emotion of a conversation to prevent future problems. I imagine it's quite frustrating to be my friend. Anyways, I kind of envy this guy for being able to appreciate the present instead of fine-tuning the future. I think I'm too controlling/manipulative/honest for that. |
Bright Eyes – You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Well, you say that I treat you Like a book on a shelf I don't take you out that often Because I know that I completed you And that's why you are here That's the reason you stay here How awful that must feel." Double-meaning. 1) The guy is done with her. He finished the book (aka their romance). He only bothers to relive it when convenient for him, most likely in a booty-call kind of way. 2) He completes her, and that's why she stays. He knows he fulfills her, so he doesn't have to bother with giving her the attention she deserves. He can take her for granted. She's aware of both things, but believes one day he'll love her the way she loves him. One day, when he's done with his other women, she believes/deludes herself into believing that he will return to her. |
Pretty Balanced – My Mind Is A Box Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To me, this song is about craving opinions and passions, but being unable to feel anything- being empty, basically. She wants someone to influence her- which is so easy to do because she doesn't have any natural inclinations- because she wants so badly to feel something. She herself is numb; life just passes over her, emotions break around her body, like water in a stream encountering a rock and splitting and passing to the sides. She can see the massive amounts of emotion breaking and swelling all around her, in the hearts and minds and actions of the people around her, but she simply cannot feel anything. This song is a testament to her desperation, and her willingness to do whatever it takes to feel anything at all. "My attention is cashed so don't talk to me anymore, be the subject terrifying or important or pure". I think this statement is her mindset when she is simply too weary to try anymore. It's her when she has tried every moment of every day to feel something, to be moved to some passion, and has failed. She's saying not to speak to her with evidence of your perspective- so clearly brimming with emotion- evident in your voice. She's weary of seeing and being able to understand your emotion without ever being inspired to feel it. "My body is built like a function of mechanics, like a robot when he gives himself his own petty instructions." She's telling herself to feel, she's going through the motions, she's making herself as open to passion as possible, but she's empty. The mechanics are all there, the actions all completed, but she doesn't feel anything. She feels like a machine, except that she can see the emotion and understand it; imagine the torment of glimpsing paradise through a barrier you can't seem to break. |
Pitty Sing – The Wedding Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To me, this song is about AIDS. The man narrating the song knows he's infected, and yet he still takes a runaway girl home with him (I'm not sure if they knew e/o previously). She was young, and innocently believed she couldn't possibly become ill. He infects her: "You went with a man Who has led to the slaughter right now". He didn't/doesn't love her; he just wanted her so badly in the moment. Now that she's infected too, he figures they may as well remain together romantically, even though their relationship is devoid of genuine love. He supposes they should live the illusion, since no one else will want them. I don't feel the man regrets his actions. This is a fatalistic song, and his attitude almost seems to be 'It happened, I infected you, get over it and stay with me, as now I'm your best bet for love before you die.' |
Mandalay – Enough Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I love this song. It's meaning can almost change with your mood and with what you need from it at a particular moment, but right now I think it's about a woman whose lover did something that betrayed her trust. (S)He's leaving because (s)he hurt the relationship and her so badly. But she's saying that she loves him/her enough to pretend to let it drop. She's saying she loves the other person enough that she'd willingly turn to stone because separation would hurt her so much more badly. She's willing to lose herself to preserve that emotional connection. But will (s)he stay? Is the love enough to hide her lover's betrayal and her heart hardening? And is (s)he even willing to try? |
