Mayday Parade – The Memory Lyrics | 1 year ago |
This song has spoken to me and has been a favorite of mine for quite some time. Though it’s clearly not written about this, it resonates strongly with me just now as I was thinking about my own maternal abandonment/rejection issues. It’s a memory which haunts endlessly and this song speaks to it deeply. |
Billie Eilish – Happier Than Ever Lyrics | 1 year ago |
Listen to it thinking about an absent/bad/neglectful father. My dad is and always has been great, so it's not confirmation bias or something. That line about never showing up on time and "I was a kid" made me think of it this way. Either way, it's a powerful breakup song no matter what the relationship the author is breaking away from. |
Loveless – Middle of the Night Lyrics | 1 year ago |
It's pretty obviously just another song about sex. But it does slap pretty hard. |
Loveless – Happier Than Ever Lyrics | 1 year ago |
After bottling up anger and resentment for a long time, this song unloads on a bad father. |
Meg & Dia – Monster Lyrics | 2 years ago |
@[WishingForYou:41709] \r\n\r\nIs the second part of your post the story upon which the song is based? Is all of that text one story? It\'s disjointed and difficult to follow, with twisted imagery like the musings of a tortured mind.\r\nIt, in and of itself, seems like a cryptic allegory of some manner of unprocessed childhood trauma. |
Lord Huron – The Night We Met Lyrics | 5 years ago |
If this song doesn't cut to the core of your soul, then you haven't experienced a true loss. |
Lord Huron – The Night We Met Lyrics | 5 years ago |
Alfred Lord Tennyson's words are widely known, "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." There is great wisdom in the phrase, but emphasis is not paid to the price of loss. This is a brief ballad about loss. The storyteller is broken by love lost and though he desires to move on from it and find love again, he's found himself unable to do so. We aren't told explicitly under what conditons the relationship dissolved. We know that the dissolution was slow, but nothing beyond that. He is so hurt that he wishes he hadn't been in love, in the fist place. This song's selection for 13 Reasons is nothing short of perfection. |
Less Than Jake – The Rest Of My Life Lyrics | 6 years ago |
I believe we have a punk ballad here, to the notion of suicidality in a person with major depressive disorder who has recently suffered a break-up, either romantic or platonic. There are numerous references suggestive of depression and suicidal ideation: Late last night, I made my plans - reference to suicide plan Emptiness starts to drown This is my all time low Feels/seems familiar - history his previous depressive episodes I feel like letting go I'm screaming out for a second try - desperate to escape, but cannot Life support shutting down If you won't forgive me - a suicidal threat Then there are all the references to fracture of a interpersonal relationship: Goodbye to my best friend Let me apologize Past mistakes Mess I've made, words I can't erase For humans, who are intrinsically hyper-social creatures, the loss or dissolution of a close interpersonal relationship is a hardship on anyone. But for a person with a depressive baseline, it can be absolutely devastating. There's a Portuguese word which doesn't translate directly into English which expresses how this person feels; Suadade. |
All Time Low – Missing You Lyrics | 8 years ago |
I think that @[calebuwm:4542] is close with the general tone; that is an appeal to a friend, but my interpretation [which I will defend below] differs enough to warrant a separate entry, rather than a reply. I believe the song is an appeal to a friend in a dangerous situation; a person who is struggling with both substance abuse and major depressive disorder. This individual had previously gotten control of their addiction[s], but had relapsed and is in danger of losing their life. IN SHORT, THE SONG IS AND INTERVENTION; POETICALLY WORDED AND SET TO MUSIC. The song begins with an opening statement that the writer has heard that the individual is trying to manage psychiatric issues with drugs or alcohol. The term "self-medicating" is used in psychiatry to describe one who takes drugs [illicit or otherwise] and/or alcohol to attempt to ease their emotional distress. The description of the "quiet of your room" as a "suburban tomb" sets the scene of an individual who is staying secluded in their residence and that the writer is concerned that the subject could die there. It also has the added macabre of suggesting that their living quarters are gloomy, either in reality or as perceived by the subject in their current state. They suggest that this person might be having some manner of identity crisis, which is rather common in our contemporary societies, and could certainly be a stressor for a person with a history of depression and/or substance abuse. They then go on to reach out and offer support, saying "If you need a friend" and later "I'll help you stitch up your wounds", which are of course emotional rather than physical. Next, there is the statement that this individual has overcome their addiction in the past, but has relapsed. You're all cleaned up=sober. Made a mess again=relapsed. The very next statement is that this person mustn't fail at recovery. "There's no more trying. Time to sort yourself out" is a statement that s/he must recover once and for all. There is an essence of absolution to the statement, that there is no alternative. Failure is not an option consistent with survival. The reference to "Hold on tight" and subsequent verbiage regarding struggle etc, I believe, refers to the emotional and physical struggle associated with fighting addiction. Paradoxically, though perhaps to encourage the subject to proceed with a path to recovery, the writer then suggests that the cessation of self-medicating will be a relatively easy one, saying, "It only takes a little push..." This is all provided with the warning plea to correct their ways or the writer and [presumably] other friends ["we"] feel that the subject will succumb to their illness ["lose your fight, kid"] at a young age ["with so much left to do"]. They then appeal to the subjects sense of empathy, rather than their self preservation instincts which are, by implication, impaired due to their present mental condition, with the statements that the writer and others will mourn his/her loss. The hope being that even if the subject has no regard for his/her own well-being, they may still want to avoid causing suffering to others. In the "C" theme/interlude the writer says to the subject to, basically, express their repressed emotions in a way which is non-harmful in nature and, in the same breath, essentially tells the subject to "suck it up." Grit your teeth/pull your hair/"fuck the world it's my life..." = get tough with the situation and overcome. The part which is unclear to me is the reference to not being able to "cover up what you've done" while elsewhere encouraging the person to "never blame yourself." They're contradictory notions... In the end, we are left wondering what the outcome will be. Perhaps in future albums [if this was written for a non-fictional purpose] we may find if the writer was successful in saving their friend's life. |
Mayday Parade – A Shot Across the Bow Lyrics | 12 years ago |
So here we have a big "F@CK YOU, B*TCH!" set to music. Clearly, he put his heart out there and she cheated on him and broke it. Now she has a song about her... |
Flo Rida – Right Round Lyrics | 14 years ago |
While I thoroughly enjoy the tune and it's, admittedly, fun to sing along... It is deeply disturbing to me that someone not only thought to write this down, but that it's a mainstream form of entertainment. SMH |
Boys Like Girls – She's Got a Boyfriend Now Lyrics | 14 years ago |
There is a recurring theme in these works of loss and being lost. This is a very understandable and identifiable theme given the artists' age and the time in which they live. Despite living in the most technologically advanced society in recorded history, in which suffering and strife is minimized beyond the dreams of anyone from just a hundred years ago, they [and most people I would argue] cannot avoid feeling unfulfilled. There's something missing; and since we [people in general] can't seem to figure out what that something might be we try to fill that void with all sorts of things, searching desperately for what that something. In their case, they think that something is a lost love [or loves]. |
Celtic Woman – May It Be Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Have faith, no matter how difficult your journey may be, and you shall overcome. |
Ray LaMontagne – Be Here Now Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I hear the sweet sound of God singing me a lullaby. I am comforted by this simple message, regardless of its intended meaning. |
Sum 41 – Speak of the Devil Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I am in most agreement w/ Erin on this one. Although I think it that the perspective that isn't the devil is instead someone who is trying to fight against their evil nature. I think the song makes a great point about the dichotomy of the traditional devil. "your closest friend and enemy" So often, from a christian standpoint, the devil is seen as one who will provide immediate satisfaction, only to destroy you later. |
Mercy Me – Joseph's Lullaby Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think the meaning is self-explanatory, given the song title, lyrics, and artist background. While I'm unfamiliar with the origin of this piece I feel that it is important to note that it can be told that this song [at least in this form] definitely was not created by Joseph. My evidence for this is the last line, which ends in "sleep tight." Sleep tight is an expression which originated in the western world well after Christ's time in reference to the then contemporary bedding which required regular tightening of ropes as routine maintanance. In Christ's in Palestine it was common practice to sleep on what we would now call a mat. Of course that doesn't take away the enjoyment of the song, for me... |
Jesse McCartney – Take Your Sweet Time Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song reminds me of the parable of the prodigal son... Imagine, for a moment, if this song were sung not by a love-struck young man, but by God. Although it's clearly meant as a secular romantic ballad, it's food for thought. |
Boys Like Girls – If You Could See Me Now Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Sounds like somebody screwed up the love of thier life... "You don't know what you've got till it's gone..." |
Paramore – My Hero (Foo Fighters cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
well... I don't know what the Foo Fighters meant. But I hear this song and think about Jesus. Can't help it... he's my only hero and he appears quite ordinary. |
Paramore – Miracle Lyrics | 15 years ago |
RYNxALN's got it... although I'd argue that she's strugling not with her own faith but with trying to save someone she loves... "I won't let you give up on a miracle" |
Paramore – We Are Broken Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is more general than specific... keep in mind their perspective as Christians... They're waiting patiently for and praying for the second coming of Christ to set all things in order. |
My Chemical Romance – Welcome To The Black Parade Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I wonder if Joseph ever said any of this to Jesus when he was little? |
John Mayer – No Such Thing Lyrics | 15 years ago |
They always use the prase "out in the real world" in school... don't believe them! You're already there, it never changes, the powers that be just keep sucking at you... there's no escape! Enjoy the now.... now is all you'll ever have! |
The Forecast – And We All Return To Our Roots Lyrics | 15 years ago |
All previous oppinions are correct... I will add that it's a ballad of frustration. In this society it takes SOOOO much, just to achive what is God given and so basic for all to have: food and shelter... |
Edwin McCain – I Could Not Ask For More Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Life is not the amount of breaths you take it's the moments that take your breath away." |
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – Your Guardian Angel Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." JOHN 15:13 |
Hannah Montana – I Learned From You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
These lyrics are different from the version I have... Anyway, same message. Seems to me to be about how someone, specifically, has offered the singer new perspective on life. There seems to be a strong emphasis on the spiritual here, based upon the refrences to belief. I personally believe it's about Christ, based on the "saved me" line... I will concede that it could have secular meaning as well, perhaps in finding a "soul mate." |
Flyleaf – Perfect Lyrics | 15 years ago |
She's submitting herself to Christ. We're only perfect when we allow ourselves to be. |
Flyleaf – I'm Sorry Lyrics | 15 years ago |
However, the abused child thing makes just as much sense. Still the same concept though. THANK YOU JESUS! |
Flyleaf – I'm Sorry Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"I don't understand the song. I think.. its about her being raped. But it seems like she liked/enjoyed it. Even is in love with this person... SOMEONE explain this to me lol " That's funny... cuz it is a little bit like rape in that you're COMPLETELY out of control. Exept, it's an overall pleasurable experiance, once you get over the shear terror of the concept. She's singing about being saved by Jesus. Specifically saved from her addictions. |
Flyleaf – All Around Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Another terrific hymn. I believe she's singing about a specific event. One solitary moment when she experianced the Holy Spirit. She sings about how the music made her sway... perhaps she was in some sort of worship service where music was playing. I know that I've felt this way. She also commits herself, all of herself, to Jesus. And then she says the He owes her all she is, which sounds a bit odd. I think she means that she's acknowledging that her mere existance is only through the grace which God feels compelled to provide. |
Flyleaf – I'm So Sick Lyrics | 15 years ago |
IMHO: Death Bunny was the first to touch on it.... Christian Emo Rock. "what's written on my heart" is a reference to the end times. In prophecy [Jeremiah 31:33] and agian in several Episles the scripture states "I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." However she's also singing about the generally shatterd state of this common era. The same disenfranchisement that just about all of us feel fuels her. But she's calling for the second coming of Christ. She knows that with the culmination of this world all will be right and there will be no need for any of the things for which we all spend our whole lives striving after, and ultimately corrupting ourselves for. Everything pleasurable we experiance without the perfect union in the almight is "empty bliss." She's "sick." Infected with this disease that we all have... no not herpes LOL... the earth. |
Boys Like Girls – Me, You, and My Medication Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Sounds to me like the writer is disenfranchised with contemporary society [aka EMO], but he's fallen in love and wonders if it's real or just the drugs talking. Will it last or will they come down off of some high? |
Saosin – Some Sense of Security Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Why write with confidence, why try to save them?" That's a biblical reference... The apostle Paul wrote "with confidence" in trying to save many... This might be a cry for athiesm, however I don't know the band well enough to make a good guess as to their intent. |
Millencolin – Ray Lyrics | 15 years ago |
my take on the situation... It's about the timeless tale of teen angst and parental alienation... hence the "big BOY" TAKE THAT DAD! "OK you see that I can walk which is good" |
Millencolin – The Ballad Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Well if there was ever a song to hang yourself by... Gosh! Still love it! Such the emo kid... |
Millencolin – Battery Check Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Don't we all feel that way... When WILL I live my life for ME?! |
Millencolin – Fox Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it may be about a motorcycle... and how the best relationship he's ever been in is with a lifeless peice of metal. |
Millencolin – Duckpond Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Just makes you want to slit your wrists doesn't it? Stuck here in MY duckpond... |
Alison Krauss – In The Palm Of Your Hand Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is a beautiful song... Its meaning is rather self evident. |
Flyleaf – Justice and Mercy Lyrics | 15 years ago |
WOW! So poetic, so beautiful. Definately a Jesus reference here... "Life he sacrificed Someone who paid the price Blood in our hearts Blood on our hands We’re crying, we’re fighting, it’s warfare, we’re dying Believing we’re winning, it’s ending, we’re singing It’s already done We’ve overcome" |
Flyleaf – Whispering Fingertips Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I couldn't agree more, Lacey! Just like you can tell a Picasso by looking at it, you can tell God's work, too. |
Flyleaf – Have We Lost Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"I want to find that book, dust it of, and read it again, There was hope in the end" This sounds like a bible reference... keep in mind Lacey's strong faith. |
Flyleaf – Broken Wings Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Singing to god again... "Under YOUR stars tonight..." [emphasis mine] |
Flyleaf – Sorrow Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This might be about Holy Communion. "I'll take this piece of you And hope for all eternity For just one second I felt whole As you flew right through me" Piece of you referring to the broken bread... |
Flyleaf – Again Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think this is prophesy... sing along with it, but change the singer to be God. It aligns perfectly with modern interppretation of Christianity. |
Flyleaf – So I Thought Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Perhaps this is about how earthly love is false? The opening stanza suggests that a young love was failed. The song then moves quickly into various Christian metaphors. I think this is a ballad in which she commits herself to Jesus. But also about waiting for that divine romance. |
Enya – How Can I Keep From Singing? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I believe this a hymn of praise. It is to say that she is so overwhelmed with love for God that she cannot help but express her awe. I particularly like the line 'No storm can shake my inmost clam, while to that rock I'm clinging." It gets me through anything and makes me weap with joy. "For You are my rock and my fortress; Therefore, for Your name's sake, lead me and guide me." Psalm 31:3 |
Flyleaf – There For You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's funny to me that Flyleaf takes such a standoffish stance on their identity as a "Christian Band." I keep their music under "gospel" in the old i-pod... A beautiful hymn... This is DEFINATELY being sung to God. It seems to me a prayer for justification and repentance. |
