Staind – Take This Lyrics 13 years ago
This song seems to fit pretty well in my life at the moment...

I don't think this song is about cheating so much as I think it could be about some form of addiction. Like maybe alcohol or drugs. Mostly because of the line "Do you believe, that the way you choose to be, I've always had to see the brighter side of things so I don't lose my faith." Like, her choosing to live the way she does is killing him.

"I'm haunted by your apathy, and all that's left is killing me."
I can relate to that... My boyfriend drinks a lot, and I'm a very fragile individual who's against that. He's gotten drunk a few times around me, and it really bothers me.. Yet he acts like it's nothing; apathetic. I'm afraid this issue could make or break our relationship... I'm holding on for now though.

Taylor Swift – Dear John Lyrics 13 years ago
I just heard this song today, and it gave me chill bumps.
I basically went through something just like this, but instead of 19, I was 16...

It really is too young... My mom would fight with me all the time about how he was just playing games with me, and I would never see it. Now that he's moved and is married, and considers me a traitor for all the crap that happened between the two of us, and blames me, and now that I really am over him, I see how convoluted and ridiculous the situation really was. "I see it all now that you're gone."

Many more of her songs fit the same situation with the same guy I was with, and though this song is about John Mayer, I often wonder if a lot of her songs were about the same person. But either way.

I absolutely love how Taylor hits the nail on the head with my situations in life. I'm not sure if it's cause her songs fit a lot of situations, or if people just go through a lot of what she sings about, but either way, she knows how to reach out to girls.

Owl City – Meteor Shower Lyrics 13 years ago
I was hoping this was about God.

For those of you who say this couldn't be about God because it sounded too sweet or too powerful, well, there is no love more powerful or sweeter than God's.
I don't want to upset you, but once you've felt it, you'd understand.
All love comes from God, so.

Jack's Mannequin – Dark Blue Lyrics 13 years ago
So this is basically how I see it...

"I have, I have you breathing down my neck, breathing down my neck. I don't, don't know what you could possibly expect under this condition."
--Two people, in love, have been, or failling, are getting really close, probably making out and whatnot. They're unsure of where to go next, cause obviously, once you go so far making out, there's nowhere left to go but sex. "i don't know what you could possibly expect under this condition."

"I'll wait, I'll wait, for the ambulance to come, ambulance to come, pick us up off the floor. What did you possibly expect under this condition?"
--I'm unsure of this line, but I see it as maybe he's gonna continue on, waiting until someone or something stops them from going any further, or "saves them" from it, like an ambulance would. And he's asking her, "Well, what did you expect to happen if I kept kissing you?"

"Slow down, this night's a perfect shade of dark blue, dark blue."
--Obviously, he's saying "let's slow this down, and just enjoy how pretty the night is."

"Have you ever been alone in a crowded room? Well I'm here with you. I said the world could be burning till there's nothing but dark blue."
--He's saying how much he really loves her here. He’s not just in it for sex, he cares about her. Otherwise he wouldn’t worry about slowing down. The “alone in a crowded room” to me, is saying they’re alone, together, even in large groups of people. Kinda like in the song “When you say nothing at all” originally performed by Keith Whitley. “…when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd.” And along with that, they don’t even matter. “The world could be burning down…”

“And this flood, this flood, is slowly rising up swallowing the ground beneath my feet. Tell me how anybody thinks under this condition.”
--This brings in the flood, which I see as a symbol of sexual behavior consuming the two people. They’re getting more and more caught up in it, and they’re becoming less and less able to control it. “Tell me how anybody thinks under this condition?” How does he decide with a clear mind? The sex drive is immensely strong.

“I’ll swim, I’ll swim, as the water rising up, sun is sinking down and now all I can see are the planets in a row suggesting it’s best that I slow down.”
--He’s trying to fight it. “The planets” is a symbol fate. He feels something’s wrong with going through with all of it, and needs to slow down.

--Chorus--

“We were boxing, we were boxing the stars. We were boxing, you were swinging for Mars.”
--I also see this as a symbol of fate. They’re fighting (boxing) the inevitability (fate) of going through with the sex.

“And then the water reached the west coast and took the power lines, the power lines. And it was me and you and the whole town underwater.
There was nothing we could do.”
--This is the climax of the entire song. They have sex! (Yes, I’m making this pretty straight forward). The power lines are a symbol of their self-control. The flood, which I see as a symbol of sexual behavior, knocks over their “power lines,” which are their self-control. It was just the two of them, “and there was nothing they could do.” They gave into it.

Now I am someone who believes there is never one interpretation to any song, or any piece of literature. This is just how I see it. Feel free to comment or anything, or correct me if you disagree.

This song is very poetic, and beautifully written. I’m a big fan of symbols and metaphors. And Jack’s Mannequin is awesome regardless. :P

…And I learned from a book a friend of mine read (How To Read Literature Like a Professor) that if you use sex as an interpretation of any story, song, poem, or anything else, you will almost never be wrong. :p
