U2 – Bad Lyrics

My friend just died two days ago of an overdose. My very good friend who I loved very, very much. It had been two weeks since the last time we'd spoken when I found out he died. I miss him so much already.
I was looking up songs about dying from addiction, and this was one of the first ones that came up in my search. As a recovering alcoholic/addict myself, it was pretty obvious from looking at the lyrics that this song is about the agony of addiction from an outsider's perspective. It still worked for me, though, because I had found recovery and my friend never quite got it.
I'm not a big U2 fan, but I've seen at least one person in these comments mention that this is their best song, and based on what I know of their music, I agree. I think this is probably the best song ever written about what it's like to lose a friend to addiction. At least it's the best well-known song on the subject. Thanks to the band for writing it. It's helping me get through this. |

Ben Folds Five – Prince Charming Lyrics

This song was not written by Ben Folds. It was written by Robert Sledge, and as far as the Five go, it was only performed live. I think the only formal recording of the song was done by Robert Sledge's next band, International Orange. I have no idea what the song actually means. |

Ben Folds Five – Amelia Bright Lyrics

Actually, Darren wrote (at the very least) the chorus to "Brick." Funny how Darren played a major role in two of their biggest hits (he wrote "Song for the Dumped", too). He was like the band's George Harrison: didn't get much of a chance to show his writing skills in the band, but when he did ... he blew 'em away.
Which is probably why Hotel Lights is such a good band. |

Hotel Lights – Amelia Bright Lyrics

How is it possble that no one has commented on this song? Granted, I did like the live Ben Folds Five version better, but it's stunning. I don't know who Amelia Bright is, or why he wrote what seems to be to be a beautiful love song to a girl that possibly can't get her act together, but I'm glad he did. Seems like it's unrequited love, but he feels joy that he even gets to be her friend, regardless of the romantic outcome. In short, I adore this song. (P.S. Like I said, I enjoy Darren's rearrangement and changes to the lyrics, but check out the live Ben Folds Five version if you can find it.) |

Against Me! – Reinventing Axl Rose Lyrics

I'll probably never see this band again because, well, I can't afford them now. (Plus their last album sucked.) But every time I hear this song, I put all that shit aside and sing every word at the top of my lungs, and I remember that youthful idealism is never more than one track away. |
