A-Ha – Dark Is the Night Lyrics
|
Basically a let's break away from this situation that is dragging us down. From this dead old town. Let's say goodbye to all others. We will break fall. Dark is the night for all... don't you feel small... we will break away and move out west.
Springsteenesque lyrics? Break away from this town? |

A-Ha – I Wish I Cared Lyrics

Possibly about lack of communication and empathy in a relationship. One person in the verses is questioning, deeps thinking. The other in the chorus, just does not want to engage in the conversation at all. Repeats I wish I cared (but I don't). |

Utterly love the lines: I walked twenty five miles to hold you
Just to find you'd moved away....

A-Ha – Shapes That Go Together Lyrics

Basically about how someone you love completes you, even if each is different. Could be about a lover. The lyric works on a more global level too. Acceptance of diversity and what not. Hence, methinks it was also chosen as the Paralymics anthem. |

Paul Westerberg – Waiting for Somebody Lyrics

i read the last line as also meaning that everyone dies alone in the end, so what is the point of crying about not having someone ?
i do think this and dyslexic heart are also to be heart in the context of the SINGLES movie. more in line with the movie and its characters. |

Paul Westerberg – World Class Fad Lyrics

gassed up casket (not cast-off), makes more sense no ?
Paul did say it was about him and tommy, rather than kurt.
some great lines in there. basically a cautionary note. interesting that it should come on 14 songs, paul's attempt to clean up and make it big. mebbe deep down he did think it was all bullshit :)

Paul Westerberg – Love Untold Lyrics
|
More likely about a grownup looking back at an earlier more innocent love he almost had. He is writing a song about it. Melancholic and at the same time idealising an older simpler time.
The underwear line kills me each time :)
I love the song more than anything for its empathatic nature. Heartbreak especially of the more innocent type is often left unshared or untold, possibly cuz its just too difficult to convey it coherently or convincingly (mebbe that's why we resort to old long songs). and the song is basically about those loves untold we hold on to most privately.
each time i hear this, of all the things it reminds me of the death scene of the Batty android in Blade Runner. all about how impossible there are some things and joys and pains one has had to convey adequately. how one carries these with em, these hurts.
anyways, a masterwork in its simplicity and ability to tap into a really emotional truth.

Paul Westerberg – Dyslexic Heart Lyrics

My table is steady. Not ready.
Lovely pop song. Catchy as hell. Paulie made his play for the mainstream and true to form fell flat on his face. Despite being on a really successful Singles soundtrack.
The song actually fits the entire SINGLES idea. Fear of committment or more appropriately, lack of connection. Everyone looks for the perfect relationship. The protagonist just guesses his heart is dyslexic as he just does not get a possibly good thing. |

Black eyed susans are also wildflowers. That metaphor works here too. I do get the point re: there being an element of addiction in there too.
Also reminds me somewhat of Lush and Green as well. |

A-Ha – East Of The Sun Lyrics
|
hearing it in the above context there is so much more to the song and the album. it provides structure to the songs of marriage (i call your name) and murder (sycamore leaves) and whatnot.
as regards the song, it is relatively clear itself. about a person / soul wandering. away from home, yet longing for it. maybe a comment of a popstar's life on the road ? |

A-Ha – East Of The Sun Lyrics

Hear the song in the following context:
(from wikipedia)
East of the Sun and West of the Moon is the Norwegian version of an old Scandinavian fairy tale. The Swedish version is called Prince Hat under the Ground.
The Norwegian version East of the Sun and West of the Moon was collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, and it is Aarne-Thompson type 425A, the search for the lost husband. The themes of marriage to the monstrous or mysterious husband, of curiosity inspired by the mother, and even the drops of spilled tallow are very similar to the Hellenistic romance of Eros and Psyche. Others of this type include The Black Bull of Norroway, The Brown Bear of Norway, The Daughter of the Skies, The King of Love, The Enchanted Pig, The Tale of the Hoodie, Master Semolina, The Sprig of Rosemary, The Enchanted Snake, and White-Bear-King-Valemon.[1] |

A-Ha – Sycamore Leaves Lyrics

The lyric is something like Poe's TELL TALE HEART where the narrator murders and buries someone but thinks he hears the dead person's heart beating. Here too seems to be the case: a murderer's conscience torturing him ?
Thinking this lyrics through, quite amazing how dark this and several of the songs on the East of the Sun album are. |

the song is basically about the games people play in relationships. just act up for no reason, to get a response. at the end of the day the same becomes wearing and it just ends up ending a relationship when both parties were just playing, maybe. |

Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics
|
erm, methinks the song is about him trying to deal with his fame and all his demands made on his as the supposed symbol of the generation. sorta like dylan had to do in the 60s. dylan wrote maggie's farm etc. kurt basically apologizes sarcastically for falling short on all the demands that are made on him. he says i write and say what i am and what i feel. i act as i want. what else is he to say or be ? i dont think that he actually means he has been buried by being married. it is more him saying that is what others say. so sorry for that too. so sorry for everything, for me being me. |

Nirvana – Sliver Lyrics

Erm, the entire point of the song is that the kid at the end of the day does not want to be in his mother's arms. His granma's place has become his home. Methinks given Kurt's own moving around re: a broken home, that is sort of the point of the song. The kid gets ofloaded to grandparents and in the end that becomes his home. Doesn't much care for mama no more. |

A-Ha – Velvet Lyrics

Erm, this ain't a love song. It is a nasty song: her skin may be velvet but she sure is twofaced. Eyes that never reach home. Lives in a palace with things you can't own and most crucially when we are together, I am always alone.
i wouldnt normally go by what the video depicts btw. songs and vids dont necessarily correspond (though the vid is close to the song). still, i definitely go with this being a cynical song. misinterpreted like people thinking Police's Every Breath You Take is a lovely love song. |

Basically about sticking together through thick and thin. The storm may be upon us but let us wait it out: it will get better.
On the other hand, rain can be seen as renewal. It will wash away the old skin, the years of silence and the growing violence.
Some ambiguity here. All the more better for it. |

A-Ha – Crying In The Rain Lyrics

erm, crying the rain wasnt even by the everlys. it was sung by them. i think it was written by carole king and another. so even the everlys dont deserve the credit by Shadows logic.
In any event, who cares. lets just interpret the song :)
it's basically about pride in love and relationships. the guy has been hurt but he wants to act as the guy and not cry. and he says he will only cry in the rain, so she doesn't get to see that she has hurt him so. maybe, crying in the rain will help him too as ever venting he might get to smile. |

A-Ha – The Sun Always Shines on TV Lyrics

Most of what has been said already seems spot on. More a case of a person looking for shiny sunny days in his life (as seen on tv) but is mostly assailed by greyer days and times. He wants a significant other who may be real or a fantasy (porn?) who might make him happier like on tv. |

Distance causes loneliness. A long distance relationship. Or more likely, a relationship that was ended by her as she moved away. He is still holding on and somewhat bitter. Feels lonely but also out of pride says that he has learnt to live by ignoring his loneliness and she (who perhaps is still in touch with him as a 'friend') shouldn't worry. |

A-Ha – And You Tell Me Lyrics

A cute underappreciated gem. Basically about a guy wanting to have another go at a relationship that didn't work the first time around. With all the conditions he is imposing this time around too, one wonders if it will work this time too. Still, he is willing to have a go but still somwhat scared of being hurt again. After all, it the ones u truly love who can really hurt you.
The song is sorta like We Can Work It Out by the Beatles lyrically in that the protagonist is very self-centred still and you can see how it might not work out. Notice that this one protagonist says that he is coming back 'for your sake' and not for his own. Mock pride i guess, or mebbe a character flaw ?
Either way a gem. |

Actually more than a relationship, the song is about a marriage falling apart. Mebbe saying marriage and love not compatible ? Maybe doubting that they are. But in the end resolving 'let me hold you for a while.'
Another curious ambiguity, second verse: 'when SHE moved her hips' could it be a party ? someone the protagonist cheats with ? that interpretation is also supported by the song btw. |

A-Ha – Manhattan Skyline Lyrics

I used to be up at Columbia, New York and left after graduation for Oxford leaving a lot of friends behind. I used to have this on a sheet on my wall: the song is basically about a person moving on to another place and basically being hurt by having to say goodbye to all the various loved ones he has had. So much so that he in the chorus gets angry and say he doesnt want to say goodbyes anymore, doesnt want friends anymore, doesnt want to try again with anyone. Sort of along the lines of Billy Joel's Innocent Man (some people stay far away from the door/ if there is a chance of it openning up...) etc. |

A-Ha – Dark Is The Night For All Lyrics

Curious lyric this. Initially i thought it was about breaking up and breaking away. Now that i look at it closer could it be about two of them breaking away together from a town or a situation that has them tied down ? There is some ambiguity in the lyric. Is it like Springsteen's Born to Run, about two lovers running off (it's time WE moved out west). The music (sad) however suggests the earlier breakup interpretation tho . |

A-Ha – Angel In The Snow Lyrics

The song is basically about one person assuring another the he/she will be there for the other person always, so she/ he need not worry about the future. They will deal with it together.
The video however takes it to another level. Shows death coming between the protagonists. Only for Angel Morten to get Mortal Morten to save gf from car crash. |
