If you say that, then you're obviously not reading between the lines enough. There's more to it than just being about "fame".

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics 13 years ago
I do agree with some of the points made about the song, but personally, I think it's more about being under-appreciated or being underrated for what you're doing. And honestly, I think it's seen in some of the lyrics, especially:

"And chisel a marble word
But all is lost if it's never heard"

"I'll keep your dreams
You pay attention for me
As strange as it seems
I'd rather dissolve than have you ignore me"

People pay attention to music for the wrong reasons, or they don't pay attention to the music/lyrics to a song at all and they completely ignore it. I think the whole point the song is trying to make is that they just want to be "praised", i.e "congratulated" for their hard work. I think that's why the applause fits so well at the end of the song - sometimes it's just a matter of being praised, even if it's small.

IAMX – S.H.E Lyrics 13 years ago
It seems like when Chris writes, he typically puts himself into the perspective of a woman and writes from their point of view. I really can't imagine why the letters are abbreviated; the only thing I can think of is the fact that the S can be taken away so it'll be either HE or SHE. Whichever fits for the listener?

Anyway, the song is pretty self-explanatory - when everything gets too hard to difficult, and when everything just seems to be going wrong, you only have music.

Musically this has to be my favourite IAMX song; Chris's voice is just absolutely fantastic in this one. Words can't describe.

Majority of you are all missing the point.

After Gwenyth Paltrow's (Chris's wife) father passed away, she went into a deep depression. This song, from what I've read and heard, was written for her.

IAMX – Spit It Out Lyrics 13 years ago
I personally think it's about being in a relationship you don't want to be a part of anymore, but you're too afraid to speak up and say anything. I know it may not really seem that way, but there's certain references in the lyrics that cause me to really think that's the case. Example?

The whole chorus: they talk, they know how to communicate with each other, and they play the game, but it's not necessarily getting the couple anywhere. It almost seems like they're just going through the motions, in a sense. Similar to someone in a deep depression.

"Don't beg the question when the answer is war": probably one of the key parts of the song; bringing up the topic is enough to set off a whole big debate, so why even say anything at all regarding the situation? I know it's a bit contradictory to the what I said about the chorus, but in a way it makes complete sense: they can communicate regarding other aspects but when it comes to the one main factor of the relationship, they can't.

The title of the song (Spit It Out) is practically a give away, at least in my eyes. If you don't want the relationship anymore, just say something about it. Don't hold it back.

IAMX – Missile Lyrics 13 years ago
It can be about anything, but for this song in particular I'll say it's more directed toward a relationship. I'm not sure of when he went out with/broke up with Sue Denim, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was directed/about her.

Basically what I gather from the lyrics is that he jumped into a relationship without even really realising it. I don't really see how there's any references to obsession in the song, but I guess people will believe what they want. Anyway, I think it relates to being with someone and after a while realising that they're not really for you, but a part of you still loves that person and you don't want to let them go just yet. It's not necessarily obsession; I think it's more of a matter of being afraid to say he wants the relationship to end rather then being obsessed with the person to the point he can't get enough of her. He knows deep down she's not good for him, but he still loves her which makes the situation a bit more difficult to handle.

Pink Floyd – Mother Lyrics 13 years ago
@nslock: And how so? Did you read anything on how The Wall came to be, or are you taking what you saw in the movie (if you saw it) too literally? It's been stated many of times that The Wall relates to Roger Waters' life and makes references to Syd Barrett's, as well. Yes, there's references to other issues and such throughout the album but by no means is this song about the government. Clearly, you're looking too deep into things.

The song is basically straightforward and to the point with what others have said: it's about having an overprotective mother to the point that SHE is basically brainwashing her child with her ideas. It gets to the point that after a while the child is constantly looking for reassurance on different issues, even as an adult because of the ideas and theories the mother put into her child's head. According to stuff I read, Waters' father died in combat when he was still an infant so he never really had a father figure in his life; by instinct of course his mother would feel compelled to be more overprotective.

Pink Floyd – Us and Them Lyrics 13 years ago
I find it hard to believe that this song is about war. Granted everyone has their own opinions and interpretations, but I highly doubt war is what they had in mind while writing this song.

Remember, Dark Side of the Moon is about a slow descent into insanity, and usually other disorders, usually ones that aren't so serious, come before the insanity itself. I really like to think that this song relates more to depression. If people want to stick to their war analogy, then it can fit for people with depression (us) vs. the people without depression (them) because it's a constant battle.

Muse – Guiding Light Lyrics 13 years ago
I do think this is the best one on The Resistance; it's the closest one to Matt's lyrics written for Black Holes & Revelations. But, anyway:

The meaning seems to be quite obvious: a loss of hope, or guidance. I don't like saying that it's automatically about a relationship, but considering Matt did break up with Gaia while they were recording this, it makes a whole lot of sense. He loved her, she's gone (for whatever reason) and he feels like he's lost everything, including whatever little bit of faith he might have had. He probably wants to try and bring out some sort of of left-over happiness between them ("the sunshine trapped in our hearts; it could rise again"), but there's no sense because the love just isn't there. But at the same time, there is a sense of relief ("fragile and stripped to the core; I can't hurt you anymore").

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 13 years ago
I honestly don't think this song has really anything to do with a relationship. Personally, it sounds more like some sort of anxiety and waking up one day, realising that you can't live in a state of fear anymore. You have to get up and do your OWN thing, without worrying what your family might say ("Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father", etc.) Sometimes people wake up and come to terms with the fact that the only way they'll ever really get over something (such as anxiety) is by running away from everything in order to make yourself happy.

Sum 41 – Pieces Lyrics 14 years ago
I really wish that everyone would stop looking at this song from the view point of a relationship, because to be honest, there is no reference ANYWHERE, not even in the video that it's about that. If it means it like that for you, then fine, but I really doubt it has anything to do with a relationship.

Personally, I think it has a lot to do with alienation, depression, and like someone else said not being able to fit in. Sometimes trying to explain yourself to someone else means absolutely nothing, your thoughts mean shit and no one believes you. It gets to a point where you feel like you're better off alone, and you feel like you can handle it all because in the end no one gives a shit.

Manic Street Preachers – Facing Page: Top Left Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with the first comment about it being about Richey's time in the hospital. Who knows, he could have even wrote this while he was there.

I don't think it has much to do with 'beauty', as someone said. I see it as Richey scared of what's going to happen when he leaves the hospital because, obviously, things change - he had to 'stop' cutting, he had to 'stop' drinking in order to leave. It's a huge change on the body, but it's also very frightening because for him to cope, it was all he knew. He even said it in his last TV interview, him not drinking at night to fall asleep made the day longer and he had to find other methods to deal with certain things that he would usually cut for.

Manic Street Preachers – Roses In The Hospital Lyrics 14 years ago
I find it kinda hard to believe Nicky wrote the lyrics... they kinda sound a bit more 'personal' to Richey in a sense considering HE was the depressed one, etc.

Then again, considering they were best friends and all, if you're surrounded by someone enough, you can pick up easily how they're feeling (if you're aware of it), so it probably wasn't hard for Nicky to write a song like this and put it somehow in Richey's POV.

Like someone said before, the most attention people usually get in their life time (providing they're not the center of attention already) is when they're screwed up. No one probably would have given two shits about Richey and the fact that he was in the Manics unless he did what he did. The moment he came out more and more about his depression and self-harm, people (mostly teenagers) followed because they had someone to relate to.

But I think just about anyone can connect with this song, especially if you feel the same amount of alienation and depression as Richey.

Kind of reminds me of 'Revol' a bit with the whole idea of failed relationships. It seems to be one of those ideas that Richey just couldn't seem to leave behind. Even though this song is short, it has a lot of true emotions to it - definitely one of my faves from the album.

I do think, personally, that the demo version was better.

I don't how much clearer someone can get about Anorexia... richey managed to explain it better than half of the Anorexic chicks out there.

I don't find it disturbing though; it's just the flat out truth about what an Anorexic goes through. They take pride in seeing the ribs poke through their skin, hunger panes, feeling dizzy. It's a general meaning.

Prostitution doesn't just mean "selling yourself for money", it also means "act or an instance of offering or devoting one's talent to an unworthy use or cause". In a sense it isn't about prostitution sexually wise, but in the sense that Richey lacked being able to say no to anything. i think just about everyone can relate to this song in a sense.

I don't see why everyone finds this song so confusing to understand. This is the one out of the album that I think, along with 4st 7lb gets closest into how Richey was truly feeling.

If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down
I''ve been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else

Think about how vain he was when GT first came out. He loved himself, they ALL believed the band was the best band in the world, and he didn't really give a shit. The whole song isn't about self-mutilation like people like to think; it's about just being different and doing shit that people don't approve of, and overall? Hating yourself, which is something Richey said in an interview.

Manic Street Preachers – This Is Yesterday Lyrics 15 years ago
Nicky wrote the song

Richey disappeared

Doesn't it ring a bell? This song is obviously about how Nicky couldn't help his best friend through the worst time of his life.

"Someone somewhere soon will take care of you
I repent, I'm sorry, everything is falling apart
Houses as ruins and gardens as weeds
Why do anything when you can forget everything"

That has to be the part of the song that just gives it away. He's giving up because he knows he failed his friend. He's sorry he can't help, but that's the way it is.

Shiny Toy Guns – We Are Pilots Lyrics 15 years ago
For the love of God, what gave everyone the idea this is about homosexuality? It really doesn't make any reference to it.

Think about being 17 and having overbearing parents: they think everything in the book is wrong with you, you do EVERYTHING in your power to impress them, but sometimes it just doesn't work and they don't understand who you are, no matter what you do for them.

"From the madness in what you do
The fingers point right back at you"

Parents are usually hypocrites, I hate to say. That line is trying to say that, sometimes the kids aren't the ones to blame in the situation: in the end the PARENTS have the problem.

"I'm making sense of shattered dreams
Because I want you to be proud of me"

Right there is the key of the song: teenagers, if they're overacheivers, will do EVERYTHING in their absolute power to try and win approval of their parents.

Like I said, I DOUBT this song has anything to do about sexuality... it seems to be more about living with parents who think everything in the book is wrong with you.

best song on the new album, at least lyric wise. i really don't care for anything else on it.

my take on it is that it's about someone who wants to be remember for the good that they've done, and not all of the bad. forget the mistakes, the troubles... remember the good a person has done.

Arcade Fire – Intervention Lyrics 15 years ago
can i just say after hearing this song for the first time a few days ago, i cannot stop listening? it truly is amazing -- from the church organ to the lyrics in general, it's a structured song that does have a meaning, and can be different depending on the listen and their current situation.

personally i think it's about life in general and how everyone needs to have an intervention -- a religious one. when things turn bad everyone turns to religion as an answer, and i think that's what this song is mostly about:

"Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart"

people are afraid to admit that they have a love for God because of what others think. especially when something does go wrong in one's life, they go to the church secretly so no one knows.

the song can have a bunch of meanings -- political, religious, etc. it makes no difference.

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics 15 years ago
oh come on, "scare your son, scare your daughter". doesn't it ring a bell to anyone?

half of the song is about the parents and how they lie to their children, hiding them away from the world so nothing can happen. all parents do that, it's a normal action and when you're a parent you'll be doing it as well.

the other half is the children's perspectives of it all -- rebel and don't listen to the lies being fed to them. lets just say as an example, someone's child goes off and does something that the parent told them not to, and they come home later that evening, shout at each other, etc. when the child goes to bed that night and close his/her eye's, what's ringing in the back of his mind? the "lie" or what really was the truth being fed back to him.

the title is called "rebellion (lies)" for a reason basically. teenagers rebel, especially when their parents tell them not to do something. on the same token though, a parent can't hide and scare their kids away from the real world forever -- a child has to rebel.

Muse – Falling Away with You Lyrics 15 years ago
like someone said on the previous page i believe, i don't think it's completely about a relationship. the whole point of the album was to talk about things ending, and one of the topics can be the end of the world.

with a song like this, i think it can mean anything to the person listening to it -- it doesn't just have to be about a relationship, it can be about falling out of just a simple FRIENDSHIP with a person.

Katy Rose – Lemon Lyrics 15 years ago
what teenager has not gone through a period where they want to starve themselves, cut, hell even commit suicide? even though the song was apparently written for the movie Thirteen, i wouldn't be surprised if she thought about maybe once or twice starving herself or even cutting -- it's nature, it's normal.

lemon is not just a fruit -- it means a thing that is imperfect or defective. the person in the song feels imperfect, just like every other teenage girl out there. lost, confused, misguided -- and again i say, it has a lot to do with nature.

Muse – Hyper Chondriac Music Lyrics 15 years ago
this one reminds me of the "calm after the storm", realizing everything that happened in the relationship and that you never loved that person to begin with. Hyper Music to me is just the anger, the rage that is building up inside of the person because they have no other way of reacting at the moment. but this, HCM reminds me of the realization stage, coming to terms with what happened and letting the true emotions come out.

Muse – Blackout Lyrics 16 years ago
i agree with tbarkerisafag, but i think the ignorance in the song is described as young ignorance about life and death and how teenagers just feel invincible to the point that they believe they can do anything -- hence 'this love's too good to last', is pretty much just a metaphor for realizing that things will not last forever. we live our life and take it for granted everyday of the week, especially at an age like 17 because we want to live forever. but in the end it doesn't happen that way. we dwell, we forget who we are, but the problem is we're too young to care about the life we're living. but, when he says 'too old to dream' it's realizing that it's time to grow up, stop being ignorance, and just face it. accept it all.

live this song is so much more powerful, especially when the guitar kicks in during the middle. it's beautiful, definitely one of my all time favorite Muse songs.

Muse – Megalomania Lyrics 16 years ago
Matt said in an interview that the song is about a really negative relationship he was in at the time, and he wrote the song while away on vacation with the chick. he finally realized how negative and unhealthy the relationship was -- and wrote the song as a result. if you really think about it, the song has not a whole lot to do with religion:

"Paradise comes at a price that I am not prepared to pay":

obviously living with an asshole and accepting it. "paradise" could be a hint of sarcasm at who the ex really was, and it could also be a hint at suicide or death if you want to take it that far -- and not ready to accept what happiness something like death could bring

"What were we built for, will someone tell me please":

questioning why are we alive and why do we live -- religious if you must

"The good news is, she can't have babies and won't accept gifts from me
What are they for, they'll just grow up and break the laws you've loved"

the girl (ex) most likely can't get pregnant; has nothing to do with the Virgin Mary (and it's a good thing that the girl can't get pregnant in a way)

Gifts could mean something special like sex, or a musical talent and she won't accept it; good thing she can't have babies so they won't wind up just like her.

"Take off your disguise I know that underneath it's me":

could go a few ways: narrator is talking about himself and all the while has been faking who he really is; telling ex to stop faking who she really is or stop trying to be the controlling god figure she makes herself out to be

"Useless device, it won't suffice, I want a new game to play":

now the religion can come into play -- obviously religion is useless right now and he wants something else to fall back on (perhaps music)

"When i am gone, it won't be long, before i disturb you in the dark":

could be a reference to suicide again and how when he dies he'll haunt the girl's spirit to make up for all the times and all the shit she's done to him

all in all the song itself is not anti-religious -- it's a very very deep, disturbing take on a relationship that has gone horribly wrong somewhere down the line. it has religious references, especially with the whole organ in the background, but i think the organ was meant to be used to give it that creepy eerie feeling like when Dracula plays his melody in all of those movies in the castle -- and was still just as hard for Matt because he wasn't a religious person at the time.
