Katy Perry – Ur So Gay Lyrics 16 years ago
Using the term "gay" to mean "less than a man" is incredibly insulting. Period. Even worse is that this song will further encourage young people to use "gay" as an insult. It makes me sick.

Also, "ur" for "you're?" Almost as sickening.

The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song. Definitely about two runaway teens. The line "We bit our tongues Sucked our lips into our lungs" is surprisingly graphic--first they bite their tongues to create more saliva, then they cover their teeth with their lips. A painfully realistic depiction of prostitution.

Also, the line "While your brother was so cruel" makes me think they decided to runaway because they were gay, and not being accepted at home. His mother was grieving before he left (possibly because he came out). This is a stretch, I know, but it provides some reason for them to runaway, at least.

The impetus for the speaker to begin the song, I think, is that he finds his friend/lover about to commit suicide by taking pills. This is summed up in the chorus:

"We fuse like a family"
We have each other, so don't despair!

"But I will not mourn for you"
So forget about suicide--I'd never forgive you.

"Take UP your make-up and pocket your pills away"
So cheer up, and throw away those pills.

"We're kings among runaways"
The speaker knows their lives are not the greatest, but he's being ironic to cheer up his friend, saying they're like Kings, when they both know it's far from the truth. But, even pretending that it's true makes their lives better, so they do.
