This song was based off of an old slave song from before the civil war.
However, Jerry sang "Sugaree" it in regards to his secret relationship with fellow bandmate, Donna Jean Godchaux. Because her husband was in the band too, the relationship had to be kept secret. This was Jerry's response to that time in his life. |
