| I totally agree! this is probably the best interpretation of this song. It's not about war, suicide or directly about God. It's rather as you have carefully and correctly detailed out, about one's introspection of all actions, good and bad, he has done. He feels like a loser who hasn't done anything worthwhile, all of which he admits is his own fault. He would like to go back but knows that it's impossible and that he would probably make the "same mistake" again. At the end, he can only look back and see how f***ed up his life is! | |

Very far-fetched meaning but for me the guy is dead, more likely he committed suicide because for whatever reason he wasn't strong enough to continue with his life. However, his only regret is that he has left behind the girl he loves and feels guilty that he wasn't able to stay, to live for her sake. If you take the perspective, right from the start of the song, that the dead guy, as a spirit, is watching his devasted girlfriend ["Her hair was pressed against her face, her eyes were red with anger Enraged by things unsaid and empty beds and bad behavior"]and apologising to her (even though) she can't hear a thing (!), it all makes so much sense, at least to me:P Of course, during the song, we need also to understand that all was not rosy between them and that often there was much antagonism and uncomprehension between them.. all of which the guy feels guilty too. He is just trying (vainly) to apologise... |

My favorite of all her songs. I know that there is also an English version called "Swear by the moon" (as well as an Indonesian version) but I think the French words are much more romantic and carry much more meanings than in English. For me, it's all about the sensuality of 2 lovers during that "one" night in which they forget everything and just "feel" the wonders of being with each other and in love. The words chosen by Anggun all through the song are so sensual and are an outright celebration to lovemaking. These words, coupled with the enchanting music, make up one of the most romantic ambience ever. I think that the first part of the song tells about that only "one" night that the lovers give to their love, with no hopes of a tomorrow while the second part, once morning comes, is a promise to stay together whatever the odds... Probably only the die-hard romantic wishing so... |

The awesomeness of this song is still vibrant after all these years! While I can't make up my mind which song is the best from the Absolution album, Hysteria is undoubtedly one of the very best! It really gets you in the guts! My take on its meaning, aside from any type of interpretation based on the music video as I've been reading here, has always been that it's a dark, dark song about...a new born vampire who is fighting to no avail against his/ her lust for blood; where his/ her cravings are eating him/ her away, driving him/ her to utter madness... I know that it probably sounds stupid and believe me when I say that I absolutely do not think vampires exist outside the fiction world, but really this song is so powerful in conveying this feeling of mad obsession (as rightly identified in the previous posts) and burning addiction that I cannot help but continue to associate it with an intense and uncontrollable lust for blood. This is probably because at the time I discovered this song, like more than 5 years back, I was also watching the Hellsing anime and at the time, continuing to date, I always thought how well the song matched the situation of the character Seras Victoria. For those who've ever watched Hellsing will know what I am taling about esp. when the Hellsing soundtrack uses the same kind of music as in Absolution. Anyways, I guess that besides this "foolhardy" association to vampires, it is just basically about human craving for anything worldly, whether it is love, drugs, sex or whatever... For me, it'll always evoke the image of suffering vampire:) |

This is sung like a fairy tale... His voice is so lullaby like! The story told of this song is very simple and sweet: he is singing about the girl he loves, who is born in April and therefore, as per him, is more difficult to seduce than girls born in other months!!! Yet, he is desperately in love with her! It may sound funny, but as I said, this is all so sweet! |

I agree.. although the song's music may be kitsch like, I so so love what Joe Dassin wanted to express by his words... sigh... I think it is the basic definition of love at its greatest.
