Pearl Jam – Even Flow Lyrics 13 years ago
I do know that in all the live versions for at least the past 5 years he's sang (slash screamed somewhat un-interpretably) "Never vote Republican!"

Which is awesome, in my book.

Or hear, I suppose... But if you're a true Deadhead you might be able to see it too...

I love this song... You can really see the Beatles' influence on them in this one.

Pearl Jam – Speed of Sound Lyrics 14 years ago
Received my copy of Backspacer in the mail yesterday. Having listened to Ed's solo version dozens of times already, I was partial to that one. But, listening to the version on the album has been an interesting experience, the song has a slightly different feel. The music is a bit warmer, and it really fills you up and evokes different emotions than Ed's version. Definitely a case study in how music affects the meaning of the lyrics. Its a tough call, I love them both.

Pearl Jam – Amongst the Waves Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is excellent. One of the best on the new album.

I think this song is about loving, and losing love. In the first verse, the speaker is in love, "if not for love I would be drowning". And he's incredibly happy, "I am up/Riding high amongst the waves". Later on, "the channel changed/The first time you saw blood". He's been hurt for the first time. But after having been hurt, later on, "Now you're strong/You've bled yourself, the wounds are gone". So, even though he's loved and lost, he's stronger for the experience.

"Love ain't love until you give it up": In my opinion, the best lyric in the song. Sums up the character's experience.

Just incredible songwriting, Ed.

R.E.M. – Living Well Is The Best Revenge Lyrics 16 years ago
For me, this is about getting over someone (or somebody) putting you down in some way. "Living well is the best revenge"... If you live well, then clearly whatever that person deprived you of doesn't matter.

I like the example of getting denied from the colleges that I wanted to go to, but I ended up loving the school I ended up at and became the Editor of the Newspaper, and President of the Philosophy Club. So clearly, the schools that turned me down missed out.

This may be about Stipe's sexuality, and saying that it doesn't matter what people say/think about him/the gay community, because LIVING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE.

The title of the song is a quote from George Herbert, a 17th century Welsh poet and priest--What do people make of that?
